There's a lot going on inside the human brain, and for a while now, scientists have been trying to use AI to crack open this jewel of our central nervous system, and better understand how it works.
It's been slow progress, partly because of the complexity and the very unique ways that the human brain processes information and responds to stimuli.
Nevertheless, we are making progress, and a recent panel on healthcare talked about the ways that clinical research is advancing based on AI systems modeling the brain.
Panelist Rekha Ranganathan talked about the robust ways that AI is contributing, and the 800+ applications that have been developed for radiology.
'For me, what is really interesting is: AI is really aiding diagnosis, and reporting, and helping our healthcare physicians get faster, better and more effective in patient outcomes, but not quite close yet in terms of what humans can do.'
Ed Boyden is an MIT professor. He talked about Alzheimer and Parkinson's research, and using AI.
'Increasingly, we're trying to use our mapping and control tools to make maps of the brain so detailed that you could simulate the brain in the computer, and with molecular mechanistic information, we really would want to know, how does a molecule play a role in a emergent function or a disease state?' he said. 'And so the hope is that we could really pinpoint where in the brain to intervene (for battling) brain disease.'
Anurang Revri works at Stanford, where they have been modeling proteins and doing other important clinical research.
'We support research education as well as clinical care,' he said. 'So it's an interesting sort of place to be, where we have this kind of amazing research that we can translate into clinical workflows or external vendors and solutions. So that's sort of our focus, to implement the responsible AI life cycle.'
Jamie Metzl wrote the book 'Superconvergence' that deals with the ramifications of new advances in our lives.
'What I'm focusing on is the transition of our healthcare system,' he said. 'You're all familiar with the first jump from generalized medicine based on population averages, to personalized or precision health. And the next step is from precision to predictive and preventive, and all these other things, which is going to be the intersection of all the tools that we've been talking about, and the applications within healthcare.'
He also talked about structured classifications and challenges in mapping.
As moderator Juan Enriquez said, these are some of the most cited papers in science, working on diagnosis, as well as abstract things like people's thoughts and fears.
'What we are doing today is very much saying, based on what we know, on the basic physics of imaging, (how) a disease can be mapped, and then I think maybe a little bit of predictive focus on what is potentially likely to happen based on the imaging that the patient underwent in their 20s or 30s or 40s, if we have that longitudinal, you know, time mapping,' Ranganathan said.
Boyden talked about how microscopy works.
'With expansion microscopy, we can take a cell or a piece of tissue, and infuse it with basically the stuff you find in (physical systems) and add water, and we can make it bigger, subtracting all those building blocks of light,' he said. 'And so the hope is that we can map those parts and how they touch. That is, in some ways, sort of the answer: the list of all the (mediating) interactions.'
Revri talked about 'connecting all the dots' with healthcare solutions, and the importance of multimodal systems.
'When you start combining all those pieces of data and building models, multimodal models, around that, then it becomes a really powerful thing in clinical care,' he said.
'Somebody shows up with an image, and then somebody looks at the genetics, and somebody looks at the protein structures, and somebody looks at what's going on the firing of the brain. And that's really important in a time when 95% plus of central nervous system drugs fail, because we don't have the basic maps…. right? So we're trying to solve things without having maps.' – Juan Enriquez, moderator

'The future is here, but right now, it really takes a lot of effort to get (access to the new tech), and the goal of everything is just to make this seamless, as you're already describing with the radiology, but really across the board. There are so many pain points. There are so many points where there are these really life-saving capabilities that not everybody has access to, and that's the connection between what we're talking about in healthcare, and everything that we're discussing here in AI, because there's so much cross learning between the different sectors.'
Part of what this panel showed me was that urgency that Enriquez talked about, in reforming our healthcare sector, but also the quick progress that we're making in deciphering our own signals at a neurological level.
Will we win the race? And how will AI change healthcare in 2, in 5, in 10 years? We'll see.

Woman teacher banned for pupil sex and drugs texts
A woman has been banned from teaching after a panel found she sent messages about her sexual encounters to a pupil and encouraged him to smoke cannabis with her. Charlotte Doman, then 32, was teaching history at William Edwards secondary school in Grays, Essex, when her inappropriate contact began. A Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) panel was told she sent messages to the pupil where she called him "little duck" and said to him she loved him, but she denied what she said was romantic. Marc Cavey, TRA chief executive, decided she should be banned from teaching indefinitely, subject to a five-year review period. The TRA heard Ms Doman sent dozens of messages to the child, who the panel referred to as Pupil A, between April and May 2023. In one she said: "You're not even legal or an adult or anything. Like, am I taking advantage of you? Some days it feels like you're taking advantage of me lol." In messages seen by the panel, she told him: "YOU have all the control in this relationship." She also told Pupil A details about her sexual relationships, the panel found, saying in an Instagram message: "One night I ended up with three different guys." She was said to have made comments about the pupil's appearance and messaged him, saying: "I literally go get waxed every eight weeks for no-one to appreciate it." The panel also heard Ms Doman encouraged Pupil A and his friends to "pull sickies" on a day she was off school, and at least once invited Pupil A to spend time alone with her. The now 34-year-old did not attend her misconduct hearing, but in written statements said the "little duck" nickname was "not romantic". She said she was letting the pupil "know that someone cared about his existence" in telling him she loved him. Ms Doman admitted she also encouraged Pupil A to drink alcohol and smoke cannabis with her, and said: "I am unsure why any of this occurred. "I certainly don't behave like this myself. I drink alcohol less than once a month and never to excess, and I've never taken drugs." The teacher also admitted she had sent Pupil A messages outside of school hours and acknowledged she told him to "remove all trace" of her from his phone. Ms Doman denied her conduct was sexually motivated and said she saw Pupil A as "like her child", but the panel ruled on the contrary. It said Ms Doman's behaviour had a "seriously damaging" impact on Pupil A, his parents, the school and its wider community, and her conduct "had the potential to influence Pupil A in a harmful way". Ms Doman was facing "difficulties" in her personal life at the time, the hearing was told, but the panel ruled that she "did not show sufficient insight in respect of the impact her conduct had on others". FDA's New AI Tool Cuts Review Time From 3 Days To 6 Minutes
AI at the FDA getty The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced this week that it deployed a generative AI tool called ELSA (Evidence-based Learning System Assistant), across its organization. After a low-profile pilot that delivered measurable gains, the system is now in use by staff across the agency, several weeks ahead of its original schedule. Dr. Marty Makary, the FDA's commissioner, shared a major outcome. A review task that once took two or three days now takes six minutes. 'Today, we met our goal ahead of schedule and under budget,' said Makary. 'What took one scientific reviewer two to three days [before] The FDA has thousands of reviewers, analysts, and inspectors who deal with massive volumes of unstructured data such as clinical trial documents, safety reports, inspection records. Automating any meaningful portion of that stack creates outsized returns. ELSA helps FDA teams speed up several essential tasks. Staff are already using it to summarize adverse event data for safety assessments, compare drug labels, generate basic code for nonclinical database setup, and identify priority sites for inspections, among other tasks. This last item, using data to rank where inspectors should go, could have a real-world impact on how the FDA oversees the drug and food supply chain and impacts on how the FDA delivers its services. Importantly, however, the tool isn't making autonomous decisions without a human in the loop. The system prepares information so that experts can decide faster. It cuts through the routine, not the judgment. One of the biggest questions about AI systems in the public sector revolves around the use of data and third party AI systems. Makary addressed this directly by saying that 'All information stays within the agency. The AI models are not being trained on data submitted by the industry.' That's a sharp contrast to the AI approaches being taken in the private sector, where many large language models have faced criticism over training on proprietary or user-submitted content. In the enterprise world, this has created mounting demand for "air-gapped" AI solutions that keep data locked inside the company. That makes the FDA's model different from many corporate tools, which often rely on open or external data sources. The agency isn't building a public-facing product. It's building a controlled internal system, one that helps it do its job better. Federal departments have been slow to move past AI experimentation. The Department of Veterans Affairs has started testing predictive tools to manage appointments. The SEC has explored market surveillance AI for years. But few have pushed into full and widespread production. The federal government has thousands of employees processing huge volumes of information, most of it unstructured sitting in documents, files, and even paper. That means AI is being focused most on operational and process-oriented activities. It's shaping up to be a key piece of how agencies process data, make recommendations, and act. Makary put it simply that ELSA is just the beginning for AI adoption within the FDA. 'Today's rollout of ELSA will be the first of many initiatives to come,' he said. 'This is how we'll better serve the American people.'
