Heisman Trophy sleepers for college football's top award
Give me a three-pack of Heisman picks, and I'd take Manning, Smith and Nussmeier.
Behind the front-runners are a few more quarterbacks and another wide receiver that stand out as Heisman sleepers. How do I define a sleeper? Their odds are worse than 15-to-1.
Full disclosure: I am a Heisman voter. I do not wager on the award.
Here are my top Heisman sleepers for the 2025 season:
Prime Heisman Trophy sleeper candidates
Carson Beck, Miami, QB
BetMGM odds: 25-to-1
Beck headlined the shortlist of Heisman front-runners last summer. Since then, he threw twice as many interceptions (12) in 2024 as he did the previous season, then he transferred to a worse program, he had his expensive cars stolen, and he split with his model girlfriend. Ouch! Never mind all that. He still can make throws most other quarterbacks can't, and he should find ACC defenses to his liking. Cam Ward finished fourth for the Heisman after transferring to Miami before last season. Beck injured his elbow in December. He resumed throwing recently. If healthy, he retains Heisman-level talent.

LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina, QB
BetMGM odds: 18-to-1
Few quarterbacks outclassed Sellers by the end of last season. Ask Missouri about Sellers' passing ability. Ask Clemson about his running ability. Dual-threat quarterbacks make for good Heisman contenders, and Sellers fits that billing. He's an efficient passer, but he must reduce his turnovers after a redshirt freshman season filled with fumbles. A neat story helps a Heisman campaign. How's this? Sellers signed with South Carolina as a three-star recruit who played in goggles. (He later switched to contacts.) His Heisman hopes will depend on the Gamecocks rekindling their 2024 success, when they reached the playoff's doorstep.
Julian Sayin, Ohio State, QB
BetMGM odds: 18-to-1
Coach Ryan Day churns out successful quarterbacks. Sayin, a former blue-chip recruit, is next in line. If Sayin outperforms Manning in a season-opening clash of top teams at "The Horseshoe," his Heisman stock will soar. Here's your buy-low opportunity. Sayin should benefit from throwing to one of the nation's best wide receiving corps. He might encounter Heisman competition from his teammate, Smith, but a big season for Smith probably also means a big season for Sayin. He played sparingly in 2024, but he's got the arm to be a star. Sayin exudes upside, with a great supporting cast around him.
Long-shot sleeper to contend for Heisman Trophy
John Mateer, Oklahoma, QB
BetMGM odds: 25-to-1
Oklahoma needed a quarterback to lead a revival after the Sooners' dismal first season in the SEC. Insert Mateer, who starred at Washington State, like Ward before him. Mateer's offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle, preceded him to Oklahoma, so there's no need for Mateer to learn a new system. Now, he just needs to prove himself in the SEC. He's a dual threat with a bundle of playmaking skills. Oklahoma's brutal schedule - it's perhaps the nation's toughest - will create a platform for Mateer to sink or shine.
Hail Mary sleeper to contend for Heisman Trophy
Ryan Williams, Alabama, WR
BetMGM odds: 35-to-1
How's this for a Heisman narrative: Williams, at 18 years old, would be the youngest player to win the award. He introduced himself on the scene with a 177-yard receiving game against Georgia. He'll need to find more consistency as a sophomore to emerge as a contender. Alabama will have a new starting quarterback, and it's unclear whether that will help or hamper the pass game. Williams' Heisman hurdles include proving himself as the nation's best receiver within a landscape that includes Smith from Ohio State. Williams enjoys an advantage in playing for Alabama, which has produced four Heisman winners since 2009.

Hibs are through to the Conference League play offs after a night of high drama at Easter Road that included goalkeeping mistakes, a red card and a contender for goal of the season if not the decade. Hibs went into the game with a two-goal lead thanks to Martin Boyle's double in Serbia last week, but pre-match David Gray insisted that it was only half time. He made four changes to the starting XI that drew with Kilmarnock last Sunday, three expected and one enforced, midfielder Jamie McGrath who missed out due to injury. Elie Youan, Junior Hoilett and Grant Hanley made way for Boyle, Jack Iredale and Kieron Bowie. Hibs almost made the perfect start when Boyle beats his man down the right side and crossed to the unmarked Chris Cadden, but he hurried his effort which went straight at Partizan goalkeeper Marko Milosevic. Then in the 16th minute Milan Vukotic silenced the noisy Easter Road crowd with a long range effort. Hibs keeper Jordan Smith got his hand to the strike but was unable to stop it entering the net. Rocky Bushiri almost equalised but headed Dylan Levitt's cross wide from close range. Campbell looked to have been bundled over in the build up but no penalty was awarded despite the protests. Then just before the break Jovan Milosevic doubled the visitor's advantage but Smith should have done better. His tame shot squirmed underneath Smith's body and rolled over the line. In added time Partizan claimed for a penalty when Mario Jurcevic's cross appeared to strike Warren O'Hora's arm but after a VAR check it was not given and Nikola Simic was booked for his protestations. But with the supporters subdued after losing their advantage Bowie scored a goal that will be talked about for a long time by the Hibs fans. The Scotland striker held off a defender and hit a first time lob from all of 35 yards which arced over Milosevic and in off the post. Easter Road erupted and moments later Partizan went down to 10 men for the second week running when Simic was shown a second yellow fora bad challenge on Bowie. Alasana Manneh replaced Dylan Levitt as Gray tried to hold on to the aggregate lead and there were some groans when five added minutes were added. Despite the numerical disadvantage the visitors piled on the pressure and Smith made amends for his earlier mistakes with a string of fine saves. But with seconds remaining Andrej Kostić slammed the ball home from close range sparking mayhem from the Partizan bench. Hoilett and Youan came on for the start of extra time and it was the Canadian midfielder that set up the winning goal. His through ball found Josh Mulligan who burst into the Partizan box. His shot was saved but the ball fell to Chris Cadden and the full-back made no mistake from close range. His brother Nicky almost wrapped things up after the restart but his header was saved and he kneed the rebound wide of the posts. With the fans roaring them on Hibs managed the game out to a memorable victory and the players lapped up the adulation with a rendition of Sunshine on Leith. After the final whistle Gray told BBC Scotland: 'Delighted for the players. A really unbelievable performance. I really underplayed the magnitude of the first leg to the players, knowing it was half-time in the tie. 'For large spells of the first half the shape was really good, we had the better chances and then there's obviously a couple of mistakes from [Jordan Smith]. 'The character was certainly tested. Half-time came at a good time – I was able to calm them down and then it's all about character. 'It was horrendous for me to watch at times and ultimately it's a brilliant result over two legs. I'm delighted for Jordan Smith for his second-half performance. He made big saves at big times. 'All in all, delighted to get through.' Hibs progress to a Conference Laegue play-off against Legia Warsaw, who lost 5-3 on aggregate to AEK Larnaca in Europa League qualifying tie. Before then, Gray's side travel to Livingston on Sunday for their second-round Scottish League Cup tie. Jamie Smith leads London Spirit to win over Trent Rockets
London Spirit claimed their second win of The Hundred with a 21-run victory over Trent Rockets. England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith scored a half century for the hosts at Lord's as they reached a total of 162 for five and Joe Root's Rockets, who had won their opening two matches, were unable to keep pace in reply. Smith was eventually caught by his England team-mate Root off the bowling of Sam Cook for 52 but captain Kane Williamson maintained the pace with 45, while Ollie Pope and Ashton Turner also contributed valuable runs. Openers Tom Banton and Root got London Spirit off to a strong start in their reply, putting on 73 for the first wicket, but Marcus Stoinis, who smashed four sixes, was the only other batter to make an impression. There was a painful end to his innings after only three balls, meanwhile, for Tom Alsop, who left the field with blood streaming from his nose after a bouncer from Jamie Overton found a way through. The Rockets ultimately came up well short, finishing their innings on 141 for six. There was success for the midlands outfit in the women's event, though, the Rockets claiming their first victory of the season in emphatic fashion. England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt led them to 149 for six with an unbeaten half-century, and they bowled out reigning champions Spirit for 116 with five balls remaining to claim a 33-run win. Openers Bryony Smith and Natasha Wraith set the tone for the visitors at Lord's with a partnership of 62 for the opening wicket – Smith scoring 42 from 23 balls. Both fell to Eva Gray, who then went on to dismiss Heather Graham and Emma Jones in successive balls, but Sciver-Brunt remained at the crease and finished her innings unbeaten on 51 from 29 balls. London Spirit lost wickets at regular intervals, with only Kira Chathli, Cordelia Griffith and Charli Knott reaching double figures, while Kirstie Gordon claimed four wickets for only 15 runs off 20 balls.

Chris Cadden's extra-time strike sends Hibernian into Conference League play-off
The Hibees led 2-0 from the first leg in Serbia but their advantage was wiped out by half-time after two costly mistakes from goalkeeper Jordan Smith. Kieron Bowie's 59th minute wonder goal put the William Hill Premiership side back in front and they looked to be in full control when the visitors had Nikola Simic sent off shortly afterwards. But Partizan struck deep into stoppage time to go 3-1 ahead on the night and force extra-time, where Cadden landed the decisive blow of an epic third qualifying round encounter. Manager David Gray had stressed that Hibs needed to approach the second leg as if the tie was still level, and they responded with a purposeful start in which Cadden spurned a great chance just a couple of minutes in. The visitors soon started to settle into the game, however, and they reduced their aggregate arrears to one in the 17th minute. Milan Vukotic's strike from just over 30 yards was well executed but Smith – diving to his left – should have done better than help it into the net after getting both his gloves to it. The goalkeeper's evening took a further turn for the worse in the 44th minute when he meekly allowed Partizan to level the tie. Smith appeared to have done enough to block Jovan Milosevic's low shot from just inside the box but it somehow squirmed under his body and trundled agonisingly over the line, prompting jeers from a shellshocked home support. Gray resisted the temptation to substitute Smith at the interval, and the errant Englishman would have been mightily relieved when things swung back in his side's favour in spectacular fashion in the 59th minute. Bowie seized on a bouncing ball just over 30 yards out and unleashed an audacious lobbed effort that looped over the helpless Marko Milosevic, who was little more than a yard off his line. The Hibees' situation got even better four minutes later when Partizan – as was the case in the first leg – were reduced to 10 men after Simic, who had been booked at the end of the first half, was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Bowie. Smith redeemed himself somewhat with three big saves in the closing stages but he was unable to stop substitute Andrej Kostic netting from just inside the box with the last kick of normal time. Hibs were not to be denied, however, and Cadden followed up to ram home the rebound in the 10th minute of extra-time after Josh Mulligan had surged into the box and been denied by Milosevic.
