Chris Cadden's extra-time strike sends Hibernian into Conference League play-off

Glasgow Times13 hours ago
The Hibees led 2-0 from the first leg in Serbia but their advantage was wiped out by half-time after two costly mistakes from goalkeeper Jordan Smith.
Kieron Bowie's 59th minute wonder goal put the William Hill Premiership side back in front and they looked to be in full control when the visitors had Nikola Simic sent off shortly afterwards.
But Partizan struck deep into stoppage time to go 3-1 ahead on the night and force extra-time, where Cadden landed the decisive blow of an epic third qualifying round encounter.
Manager David Gray had stressed that Hibs needed to approach the second leg as if the tie was still level, and they responded with a purposeful start in which Cadden spurned a great chance just a couple of minutes in.
The visitors soon started to settle into the game, however, and they reduced their aggregate arrears to one in the 17th minute. Milan Vukotic's strike from just over 30 yards was well executed but Smith – diving to his left – should have done better than help it into the net after getting both his gloves to it.
The goalkeeper's evening took a further turn for the worse in the 44th minute when he meekly allowed Partizan to level the tie.
Smith appeared to have done enough to block Jovan Milosevic's low shot from just inside the box but it somehow squirmed under his body and trundled agonisingly over the line, prompting jeers from a shellshocked home support.
Gray resisted the temptation to substitute Smith at the interval, and the errant Englishman would have been mightily relieved when things swung back in his side's favour in spectacular fashion in the 59th minute.
Bowie seized on a bouncing ball just over 30 yards out and unleashed an audacious lobbed effort that looped over the helpless Marko Milosevic, who was little more than a yard off his line.
The Hibees' situation got even better four minutes later when Partizan – as was the case in the first leg – were reduced to 10 men after Simic, who had been booked at the end of the first half, was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Bowie.
Smith redeemed himself somewhat with three big saves in the closing stages but he was unable to stop substitute Andrej Kostic netting from just inside the box with the last kick of normal time.
Hibs were not to be denied, however, and Cadden followed up to ram home the rebound in the 10th minute of extra-time after Josh Mulligan had surged into the box and been denied by Milosevic.

'One of the most exciting nights at Easter Road in years'

We asked for your views on Hibs' pulsating extra-time win over Partizan Belgrade to reach the Conference League play-off are some of your comments:Gary: A bit like Tina Turner, Hibs don't like to do things easy, they like to do things hard!John: I need a lie down. If i was not already grey and balding I would be after last night. What a rollercoaster of a night, team spirt and never-say-die attitude, the boys showed great self belief. As for Kieron Bowie's goal, eat your heart out I'm glad Jordan Smith redeemed himself with some brilliant saves in the second half. Bowie and Josh Mulligan both outstanding, but all in all excellent Hibs who never gave up and ran themselves into the ground. They've made me proud yet Wowie Bowie, the guy is unplayable, and his special goal gave Hibs belief after losing two despicable goals. Great team effort to make the Unbelievable night at Easter Road. Smith hands them two goals, Bowie scores a goal of a lifetime. Then both teams go toe to toe in a pulsating match which left everyone shattered in the stands. But we are through to the next round. Well done Hibs have ridden their luck in this tie but no one can doubt the character of the group. One of the most exciting nights at Easter Road in Genius, sheer genius. Bowie has the potential to become one of the truly great centre forwards. Icing on the cake of a team performance filled with passion commitment and promise of much more to come. Even our goalie came good second half and extra time with tie-saving stops. Great time to support the Hibees.

David Gray praises players' character after Play-Off qualification

Hibs head coach David Gray praised his players' character as they progressed into the UEFA Conference League Play-Off Round. Hibs had to go through extra-time, once again, bt this time over-came a tough, talented FK Partizan side. After the final whistle Gray said: 'I'm delighted for everyone involved. The game will take a long time to analyse and go over. 'I thought we started the game really well, our shape was good, and we had the best chances in the first half. We knew they'd come after us, but then after a couple of mistakes we found ourselves 2-0 down. 'Half-time came at a good time for us. We got the players in and calmed them down a bit. The question I asked them was all about mentality and the character of the group. 'A lot of people spoke about the importance of the first goal of the game, but to then find ourselves 2-0 down takes huge character. Credit to the players to deliver the performance they did. The effort from every player was there for everyone to see, which was fantastic. 'Again, we were pegged back in the very last second of 90 minutes, thinking we'd won the tie. My job is to improve the players and there were moments we could've managed the game better, but the character was tested again, and we came back strong in the second half. 'The most important thing now is we're in the next round; it's an incredible achievement to beat a team like that. It takes some doing.' Kieron Bowie again stole the headlines – scoring arguably the goal of the season – and putting in a mammoth performance up top. 'If you take the goal out of it and analyse his performance, he was fantastic. He was everything you want from him, he led the line really strongly, held the ball up, and had unbelievable work ethic. The effort every player put into the game was incredible. 'His goal was fitting to win the tie in 90 minutes, but again the players were tested again. 'Even towards the end of the game, Kieron was running of fumes, but he was so important the way he was playing. It's a really good group, who are delighted with what they've done.' Hibs youngster joins Southampton on permanent transfer

Hibs youngster Rory Whittaker has joined English Championship side Southampton on a permanent transfer. The terms for the 18-year-old's transfer will remain undisclosed. Whittaker wrote his name in the Hibs history books during the 2023/24 campaign, becoming the Club's youngest ever player. Aged 16 years old and 44 days, the young right-back made his senior debut in a win over St Johnstone at Easter Road, breaking Jamie McCluskey's record. During his time at the Club, Whittaker made 14 First Team appearances and helped Hibs' Under-18s win the CAS Elite U18 League last season. He also had a short spell on loan with Scottish League 2 side Spartans. Hibs Sporting Director, Malky Mackay, said: 'As always we have to make difficult decisions regarding our young players, taking into consideration their wishes, their development, their contractual status, and other details. 'There was a lot of interest in Rory from clubs down in England, and as he had a year left on his contract, we decided this was the right deal for Hibernian FC. 'Whilst the main aim for our Academy is to produce players for our own First Team, when a move like this comes up – it is difficult to deny a youngster that opportunity. 'We wish Rory all the best with him move, and thank him for all his hard work during his time at Hibernian FC.' Like this: Like Related
