A MYSTERIOUS 'lost city' lying 2,000 feet beneath the waves off Cuba has baffled scientists for more than two decades — with claims it could rewrite the history of human civilisation.
Marine engineer Paulina Zelitsky and her husband, Paul Weinzweig, stunned the world in 2001 when sonar scans revealed huge stone formations on the seabed near the Guanahacabibes Peninsula.

The images showed what looked like pyramids, circular structures, and massive blocks 'reminiscent of an urban development,' according to
Some of the stones measured up to 10 feet and appeared deliberately stacked.
'It's a really wonderful structure which really looks like it could have been a large urban center,' Zelitsky said at the time.
The Canadian team, from Advanced Digital Communications (ADC), estimated the ruins could be more than 6,000 years old — making them older than the Egyptian pyramids.

But despite the jaw-dropping find, no follow-up expedition has ever been carried out.
While social media users today speculate the ruins are proof of Atlantis, experts remain cautious.
'It would be totally irresponsible to say what it was before we have evidence,' Zelitsky warned back in 2001.
Cuban geologist Manuel Iturralde-Vinent, from the Natural History Museum, admitted the structures were 'extremely peculiar' but stressed the depth posed a major problem.

'It's strange, it's weird; we've never seen something like this before, and we don't have an explanation for it,' he told The Washington Post.
Iturralde estimated it would take up to 50,000 years for the seabed to sink that far, far earlier than any known advanced civilization.
Mystery new 'city' found underneath Egypt's Pyramids stretching 6,500ft BELOW surface in shock discovery, scientists say
Michael Faught, an underwater archaeology expert at Florida State University, agreed.
He said: 'It would be cool if Zelitsky and Weinzweig were right, but it would be really advanced for anything we would see in the New World for that time frame.
'The structures are out of time and out of place.'
Other scientists have argued the formations are likely natural rock structures.
Despite skepticism, the discovery continues to fuel conspiracy theories online.
'Civilizations that existed before the ice age, perhaps multiple civilizations that rose and fell... The historical knowledge that has been lost (or hidden),' one person posted on X.
Another claimed: 'There is so much hidden history. Finding it so fascinating. Everything we been taught is a lie.'
Funding problems and Cuba's strict control over foreign expeditions have also been blamed for the lack of further investigation.
A planned dive in 2002 was scrapped, according to US oceanographer Sylvia Earle.
Weinzweig himself once insisted: 'The structures we found on the side scan sonar simply are not explicable from a geological point of view.
'There is too much organisation, too much symmetry, too much repetition of form.'
Another underwater enigma often compared to Cuba's 'lost city' is the Yonaguni monument off Japan's coast.
Discovered in the 1980s, the massive stone formation sits around 90 feet underwater and features sharp-angled steps and terraces that appear man-made.
Tests of the rock show it could be more than 10,000 years old.
If carved by humans, it would date back to a time before the last ice age — a theory that, like the Cuban ruins, continues to divide experts over whether it's a natural formation or evidence of a vanished civilisation.

Mysterious ‘anomaly' that may reveal ‘hidden portal' buried for millennia is uncovered just beneath Pharaoh's tombs

ARCHAEOLOGISTS have uncovered an "anomaly" which could reveal a secret portal underneath the tombs of Pharaohs. Researchers studying the area surrounding the famous Pyramids of Giza in Egypt detected the anomaly after using advanced geophysical techniques to examine the area near the Western Cemetery, where the royal and elite members of ancient Egyptian society were buried. Advertisement 2 The area the archeologists have been surveying Credit: Archeological Prospection 2 The area the archeologists have been surveying Credit: Archeological Prospection The team, made up of Japanese and Egyptian archaeologists, discovered an L-Shaped structure buried beneath the surface, whilst using using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). These non-invasive methods are a way for researchers to examine underground structures without the need for evacuation. GPR works by sending radar pulses into the ground and measuring how long it takes them to return, thus helping to create images of subsurface structures. ERT uses electrical resistance to map underground materials, and together, both of these techniques are great for providing a detailed view on the underground and detecting anomalies. Advertisement Read more archeology stories The L-shaped structure is 6.5 feet underground, and has sharp, defined angles, suggesting it was man-made. Researchers say that the shape is not recognisable as any known architectural feature from Giza, leading them to believe it could be an entrance to a deeper structure or chamber. Below the L-shaped structure, a 'highly electrically resistive,' anomaly has been detected meaning it doesn't conduct electricity in the same way as the materials surrounding it. Anomalies like this can indicate the presence of substances such as sand, gravel, or voids in the earth , which could mean there is a hidden passage or chamber below the surface. If it is found that there is a hidden chamber or passageway, this will deepen our understanding of Egyptian burial practices, and construction techniques used by the ancient society. The tattoos belong to a woman who was about 50-years-old when she died. A brief history of Ancient Egypt Here's everything you need to know... The Ancient Egyptians were an advanced civilisation who at one point ruled over a huge portion of the globe The civilisation was founded about 5,000 years ago when ancient people set up villages along the River Nile It lasted for about 3,000 years and saw the building of complex cities centuries ahead of their time – as well as the famous Great Pyramids The Ancient Egyptians were experts at farming and construction They invented a solar calendar, and one of the world's earliest writing systems: The hieroglyph The Egyptians were ruled by kings and queens called pharaohs Religion and the afterlife were a huge part of Ancient Egyptian culture. They had over 2,000 gods Pharaohs built huge elaborate tombs to be buried in, some of which were pyramids – at the time among the largest structures in the world The Egyptians believed in life after death, and important people's corpses were mummified to preserve their bodies for the afterlife The Ancient Egyptian empire fell in 30BC due to a mix of factors, including wars with other empires and a 100-year period of drought and starvation She is thought to have belonged to the nomadic horse-riding Pazyryk culture, which roamed the lands between China and Europe . The scans exposed "intricate, crisp and uniform" tattooing that could not be seen with the naked eye. Advertisement Over the two millennia, the ink has become all but invisible on the body as the skin darkens with time. "The insights really drive home to me the point of how sophisticated these people were," lead author Dr Gino Caspari from the Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology and the University of Bern, told Archaeologists worked with researcher Daniel Riday, a tattooist who reproduces ancient ink on his own body to understand how they were made. Tattooing was likely widespread during prehistory, but few remains from that era are preserved well enough to investigate. Advertisement

Disturbing Ancient Egyptian graves reveal brutal treatment of corpses 5,000 years ago including shock teen girl's burial

ARCHAEOLOGISTS have uncovered a disturbing Ancient Egyptian burial practice that saw people dismembered before being put to rest. The discovery offers a rare insight into the spiritual life of villagers more than 5,000 years ago - and may even mark the beginning of religion for the ancient pharaohs. 3 Using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, researchers analysed patterns among more than 900 tombs across the 74-acre Adaiima site Credit: Alcouffe, A., Duchesne, S., Tupikova, I. et al./ Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory Researchers found the remains of a teenage girl whose arm had been deliberately severed after her death and positioned to match her left arm. The girl's left arm was bent unnaturally in a more than 90degree angle and tucked in very tightly. The limb was removed near the lower part of the upper arm and forearm, possibly done using an axe. The muscles were most likely sliced with a flint blade, according to researchers. READ MORE ON ANCIENT EGYPT Her severed arm was carefully arranged to appear almost intact, with the hand placed beside the forearm. Buried in the Adaiima cemetery on the west bank of the Nile river, the remains date back to between 3300 to 2700 BC. The girl's body was carefully aligned with the setting sun on the winter solstice, while her coffin also pointed towards the rising of Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. Celestial alignments, and other symbolic gestures, likely influenced the religious traditions later embraced by Egypt's first pharaohs who emerged between 100 and 400 years later. The tale is thought to symbolise death, rebirth, and cosmic order. Ancient Egyptian Tombs: Over a Thousand Mummies Unveiled The cemetery her remains were found in is one of Egypt's oldest and most thoroughly studied, and paints a detailed picture about how funerary practices changed over time. Using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, researchers analysed patterns among more than 900 tombs across the 74-acre Adaiima site. Another coffin that was positioned to catch the winter sun contained a woman buried with ornate jewelry and pottery. A third grave, also belonging to a woman, faced the summer sunset and contained a ceremonial staff and plant-fiber wig. The study suggests these early burials shaped the mythology later adopted by Egypt's ruling elite - from their sky-based alignments to their ritual gestures, such as dismemberment. Older graves were placed around earlier, astronomically-aligned tombs, suggesting those burials held continued to hold religious or ancestral significance over the years. Ivory boat models and fine coffins were found with remains researchers believed once belonged to individuals of higher status or spiritual importance. Similar to the dismemberment, a singular bone belonging to a child was found placed on the chest of an adult in a later tomb. In the myth of Osiris, Isis gathers the scattered body parts of her murdered husband after he is slain by his jealous brother, Set. "Sepdet, which we know as Sirius, was believed to be the appearance of Isis in the sky," the study said. "When the state emerged, it did not create religion from scratch. "It absorbed long-standing practices and reworked them into royal narratives." 3 The limb was removed near the lower part of the upper arm and forearm, possibly done using an axe Credit: Alcouffe, A., Duchesne, S., Tupikova, I. et al./ Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory
