Imagine: The Academy of Armando, review: leaves no doubt that Iannucci is the foremost satirist of our time

Telegraph04-03-2025
There will be some people out there whose cultural lives haven't been improved by Armando Iannucci but not, I'd guess, that many. Imagine: Academy of Armando (BBC One) was therefore a bit of an open goal: simply string together a show-reel of Iannucci's greatest hits, from On the Hour to The Day Today to The Thick of It and onwards, throw in some illustrious talking heads (Chris Morris, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Palin and Steve Coogan all turned up) to say how brilliant he is and (to quote from his and Coogan's greatest creation Alan Partridge) it's back of the net.
To its credit, Imagine attempted something a little more intricate than straight hagiography, telling Iannucci's story but trying to show his method ('quicker, shorter, funnier' are his watchwords), how it all fits with his world-view (dark absurdity) and his sphere of his influence (absolutely massive). A deft combination of the three left you in no doubt at the end of the hour that Iannucci is the foremost satirist of our time.
With so many riches to choose from – not just the clips but the queues of grandees gushing with praise – Imagine only faltered occasionally. One misstep was to frame Iannucci as some kind of recluse in the JD Salinger mould. Presenter Alan Yentob spent the first 10 minutes appearing to be sniffing him out like a bespectacled bloodhound. But I've interviewed Iannucci before for this publication; many journalists have. I don't recall him being averse to talking about himself or his work at all. Maybe, just maybe, he didn't want to sit down with Yentob.
When you watched the programme you sensed Iannucci's discomfort with the pomposity of talking about himself with the perennially po-faced other Alan (and there was a priceless moment when they talked about the naming of Alan Partridge, concluding that, 'he was just an Alan', with Iannucci staring hard at the other Alan in the room). Ultimately, Iannucci's work has always made fun of things like Imagine, people like Yentob, and the very notion that there could be an 'Academy of Armando'.
None of this distracted from the excellence of the work, or the strength of the programme, but it did make you imagine if Iannucci's next project might involve the inner workings and egos of a flagship arts show.

Destination X viewers 'fuming' over show's 'unfair twist' - as favourite risks exit

Destination X fans have been left fuming over the BBC show's latest episode, as contestant Josh was given an 'unfair advantage' which puts fan favourite Nick at risk It was another tense night in Destination X tonight, as the BBC show aired its fifth episode of the series. Fans were left on a massive cliffhanger by host Rob Brydon, after the episode left them fuming. ‌ The huge twist saw Josh was given the chance to sabotage someone and move their X 250km away from the point they chose. Josh opted to choose former athlete Nick - who has shown his ability and strength throughout the course of the show. ‌ Usually, fans will see who goes at the end of each episode, but they'll have to wait a little while longer this week. It comes after Destination X fans 'work out winner' after spotting 'clue' in episode four. ‌ The good thing for fans is that they won't have to wait too much longer to see who goes, with the next episode airing tomorrow night on BBC One. Fans are now worried that Nick may be kicked out after being sabotaged, as they took to X, formerly known as Twitter to discuss. "Well, josh is going to sabotage nick isn't he? #destinationx," guessed one before he had even chosen. Another, who thought the advantage was unfair, said: "Whoever gets their X moved should get to come back in the final and move a remaining player's X". "Moving the X is so unfair. Nick will be gone," a third wrote, as another agreed: "This is such an unfair power this isn't Big Brother it should be a case where players can basically eliminate others." " #destinationX Moving someone's marker is s**t. I'm going off this programme now," said another, while one penned: "Josh sabotaging Nick… are we surprised..." ‌ At the end of the episodes, whichever contestant guesses the furthest from the correct locale is kicked off the bus, and their journey comes to a sad end. ‌ Therefore, with Nick's X being moved so far away from the position he chose, will his journey come to an end? It's not the first episode that fans have had a complaint to make about the show. Last week, fans all took to X to complain that they were 'getting annoyed' with the show and the sheer lack of knowledge that the contestants seemed to possess. One viewer took to X to say: "Getting annoyed with #DestinationX - the lack of knowledge is appalling!" Another said: "I assume it's deliberate in this show that they picked contestants who know absolutely nothing about European languages or Geography, but it's still very frustrating to watch."

EastEnders star sparks exit fears after announcement amid devastating 'split'

Suki Panesar looked like she had lost everything in tonight's EastEnders as the character was exposed for her request to pregnant granddaughter Avani Nandra-Hart It was an emotional night for the Panesar/Gulati family in tonight's EastEnders, as Suki was 'disowned' by her whole family after the truth about Avani's pregnancy was revealed. Now fans fear we could be seeing an exit for the character - especially after the actor's recent Strictly announcement. ‌ Last night, Eve took Avani to get a termination without Suki's knowledge. In previous scenes, we had seen Suki asking Avani to keep the baby for herself and Eve to bring up. Although Avani was up for the plan at first, she later disclosed to Eve that she had changed her mind. ‌ In tonight's episode, the aftermath of the revelation continued, with Ravi and Priya unleashing their fury onto Suki for her actions. An angry Priya even went as far as to slap Suki across the face, but that wasn't the least of her troubles. ‌ Later on in the episode, she took Avani to hospital after she was experiencing heavy bleeding, and once again met a furious Ravi and Priya in the hospital corridors. As she left them alone to make their way back home, Suki was left with even more panic when she found her grandson Nugget and son Vinny packing their things to move out the house. However, they weren't the only ones, as wife Eve also had the same idea. A tearful Eve then called out Suki for opening her up to the hurt of losing out on motherhood - something she had never been open to in the past. "I don't know what we've got left anymore," Eve said as she made her way out the door, leaving Suki in tears. ‌ Now, fans fear a split between one of their favourite couples - especially as it was recently announced actor Balvinder Sopal would be appearing on this year's Strictly Come Dancing. "Oh dear! Is Suki about to have a #strictly sized break after a massive argument with Eve?" said one fan on X, formerly known as Twitter, while another said: "Don't think #SukEve will survive this!" A third said: "I think the suki and avani storyline is a build up to suki temporary exit for strictly and also maybe the reveal of joel recording avani..." ‌ But is this the end of SukEve as we know it? With nothing left in Walford for Suki - will she be making a sharp exit? When Balvinder's Strictly announcement was made, many fans were convinced the character would be leaving for an extended period of time. Many believed she would go off to visit her daughter Ash in Canada to try and make amends after the rest of her family has ultimately disowned her. However, the actor revealed she'd still be working alongside Strictly rehearsals, as she said: "I'll still be working here so I'll be doing two jobs. I don't know how I'm going to handle it. I don't know what's gonna happen but I'm looking forward to it." EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
