Foreign ministers arrive in Kuala Lumpur ahead of much much-anticipated 58th AMM which kicks off on Tuesday (July 8)
SEPANG (Bernama): One of the region's most significant diplomatic gatherings is taking shape in Malaysia, as foreign ministers from Asean and its key partners arrived on Monday for the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings, which will kick off on Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur.
Among those who arrived on Monday were Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, who was received at the Bunga Raya Complex at 2.07 pm, and Brunei's Second Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dato Seri Setia Erywan Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Mohd Yusof, who landed earlier at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 at 11.30 am.
Brazil's Secretary-General of Foreign Affairs, Maria Laura da Rocha, arrived at 3.24 pm, while Asean Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn landed at 2 pm.
The 58th AMM and related meetings, a key annual event in the Asean calendar, will be hosted by Malaysia under its 2025 Asean Chairmanship theme, "Inclusivity and Sustainability'.
The highly anticipated gathering will see one of the largest assemblies of foreign ministers and high-ranking diplomats from around the world to discuss pressing global and regional issues, foster cooperation, and advance the agenda of security and sustainability in Asean.
Over 40 foreign ministers and representatives from international organisations are scheduled to attend a series of Asean-led meetings at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from July 8 to 11.
All foreign ministers of Asean member states will be present, except for Myanmar, which will be represented by a senior official from its foreign ministry. The Foreign Minister from Timor-Leste will be participating as an observer.
This is the fifth time Malaysia has held the Asean chairmanship throughout its history as a member of the regional bloc, having previously chaired it in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015. - Bernama

Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA) reported that he warned that the initiative is essentially a blueprint for mass internment camps. In a press statement, Abu Hasna said Israel has long been laying the groundwork for such a plan through the establishment of aid distribution points in southern Gaza. 'Now, they are openly declaring their intent to forcibly displace the population of Gaza into collective detention camps in Rafah, as a prelude to their expulsion from Palestinian land,' he stated. He warned that this development signals Israel's continued commitment to the forced transfer of Gaza's population, expressing deep concern over the extreme pressure being applied to Palestinians. 'The total collapse of the healthcare system, absence of aid, and depletion of fuel are all being weaponised to coerce the population into voluntary displacement,' he said. He further cautioned that the so-called humanitarian zone is incapable of hosting Gaza's 2 million residents within just 60 square kilometres of devastated land, describing the area as uninhabitable and void of any semblance of life or future. Defence minister demands public apology for assault on Cambodian soldier at Ta Mone Thom
A former Thai soldier assaulted a Cambodian in uniform at Ta Mone Thom Temple on July 13. Defence minister Tea Seiha (left) has called for a public apology. - Supplied PHNOM PENH: Cambodia's National Defence Minister has demanded that a former Thai patrol soldier, along with Thai authorities, issue a public apology for the unprovoked assault on a Cambodian soldier that took place at Ta Mone Thom temple on July 13. This demand was made in spite of the fact that the suspect has already been arrested by Thai authorities and is facing legal consequences. Speaking today, July 15, at an event to welcome Cambodian peacekeepers returning from the Central Africa Republic, defence minister Tea Seiha explained that on July 13, the former Thai soldier initially approached to shake hands but then suddenly attacked the Cambodian. 'If there was just an apology, I would be satisfied. There could be an apology; I believe there has been an informal apology. However, it hasn't been publicly announced that he apologized to Cambodia,' Seiha said. He further noted that the suspect, identified as 'Sommai', claimed he attacked the Cambodian soldier out of anger after seeing Cambodian civilians at Ta Mone Thom. He alleged that Cambodian soldiers prevented Thai civilians from accessing the temple. According to Seiha, Sommai face legal action in Thailand, as Thai authorities claim Ta Mone Thom belongs to them and plan to prosecute him in a Thai court. However, the minister argued that the suspect should be tried in Cambodia since the incident occurred on Cambodian soil. For now, Cambodia is monitoring the situation. 'What frustrates me even more is that some Thai lawyers have volunteered to defend him. Defending someone when the crime is clear is pointless. Where is the respect for the law in Thailand?' he asked. He noted that the lawyers publicly volunteered their services on social media, seemingly to gain popularity.
