Kokate in trouble again over video of him playing mobile game in Assembly

Indian Express20-07-2025
Maharashtra Agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate landed in yet another controversy after a purported video showing him playing Rummy game on his mobile phone inside the legislative Assembly surfaced on Sunday.
Opposition parties slammed Kokate saying the state government was busy playing cards game while farmers were suffering due to crop loss and non-announcement of farm loan waiver.
However, Kokate claimed that he was merely checking the proceedings of the other House on You Tube and skipping the advertisement popped up during the video. Kokate is an MLA of the Nationalist Congress Party led by Ajit Pawar from Sinnar Assembly constituency.
Sharing the video, Nationalist Congres Party (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar said, 'The ruling NCP cannot function without consulting the BJP. It seems that's the reason why when several agriculture issues are pending and on an average eight farmers commit suicide daily, the Agriculture minister has no work but to play Rummy on a mobile phone,' said.
Congress Legislative party leader Vijay Wadettiwar said, 'On one side, farmers are dying while the agriculture minister is busy playing Rummy. I appeal to farmers and people of this state to teach a befitting lesson to this fraud government.'
Claiming that the Opposition was trying to defame the government, Kokate said it was Solitaire and not Rummy. 'I was sitting in the legislative assembly and was checking the happenings of the Upper House on YouTube. An advertisement appeared and I skipped it. I was not playing anything,' said Kokate.
According to BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar, 'There is no law under which action can be taken against the minister. At best, he will be warned… I had told Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to make a law against such activities, but he said the right is with the Central government.'
Claiming that members who were found watching videos on cellphones were made to 'sit at home' in Karnataka, NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad said, 'Kokate is a minister but he has not replied to even one poser in the House. The minister is found playing Junglee Rummy, which has destroyed several families in Maharashtra. These ministers have no shame and have no respect for the state legislature. Now I want to see how Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar will react. I am curious what he will do.'
Recalling the earlier instances when Kokate courted controversy, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Kishori Pednekar said, 'Earlier, he was found making irresponsible statements. The way he is behaving is an insult to democracy… There was a time when MLAs were held in high esteem but now, they are stooping low every day.'
Speaking at his home district Nasik while interacting with farmers affected by unseasonal rain and hail storms in April this year, Kokate had said, 'Farmers take loan and wait for five-ten years for loan waiver. The government will give money to farmers to invest in agriculture. This money is for water, irrigation and farm ponds. The government makes capital investments. What do you do with the money that you get from the farm loan waiver? Farmers say they want crop insurance money but spend it on weddings and engagements.'
In another instance, he said, 'Even a beggar does not take Rs 1, but here we are giving crop insurance for Rs 1. Even then there are people who try to misuse it. There are irregularities, like people from other states applying.'

Migrant worker's son and wife beaten by Delhi police; Mamata Banerjee posts video

Kolkata July 27 (UNI): A migrant worker's wife and young son, who had travelled from West Bengal to Delhi in search of work, were allegedly assaulted by the police. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee protested against the incident by posting a video on social media. Launching an attack against the BJP-led Central Government and the ruling party in Delhi, she wrote, "Even a child is not spared from linguistic terrorism." In the video shared by the Chief Minister, a young man is seen showing injury marks on his young son's body, saying, "Look what they have done to my son. The police beat him and injured his forehead." He is also heard alleging in the video that all their essential belongings were thrown away. The man's wife also appears in the video. Pointing to her, the man says, "She too was beaten badly." However, the video has not been independently verified by UNIthand itr also does not have . Posting the video, the chief minister wrote, 'See how even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence in the regime of linguistic terror unleashed by BJP in the country against the Bengalis! Where are they taking our country now?' The Trinamool Congress has stepped up its protest following reports of harassment faced by migrant workers from Bengal working in other states. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also warned of a larger movement if harassment of migrant workers is not stopped. The allegation is that Bengali-speaking workers, suspected of being Bangladeshis, are being detained in BJP-ruled states like Odisha, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh—even after showing documents like Aadhaar and voter ID cards. In such cases, only a 'Police Clearance Certificate' (PCC) seems to secure their release; otherwise, they are being detained. The harassment of Bengali migrant workers in Delhi and Odisha has already reached the Calcutta High Court. Against this backdrop, the ruling party in West Bengal, Trinamool, has launched a 'language movement' against the BJP starting Sunday. Tomorow Mamata Banerjee is set to participate in the Nanur Dibas program in Birbhum and will also take part in a march. She is supposed to leave for Birbhum by road on Sunday evening. UNI XC SSP

‘Cleric' booked for derogatory remarks against Dimple Yadav

Lucknow: Lucknow police late on Sunday registered an FIR against orthodox Islamic cleric Maulana Sajid Rashidi for allegedly making objectionable, inflammatory, and misogynistic comments against senior Samajwadi Party leader and Lok Sabha MP Dimple Yadav during his appearance on a television channel and public platforms. The complaint was lodged on Saturday by one Pravesh Yadav, a resident of Gomtinagar's Vikalp Khand. In his written complaint, Yadav alleged that Maulana Sajid made derogatory and indecent remarks on media forums that not only hurt the personal dignity of a woman but also appeared to be aimed at inciting religious and communal disharmony in society. DCP (East Zone) Shashank Singh said that an FIR against Maulana Sajid was registered under the sections of 79 (outraging modesty of women), 196 (promoting enmity between groups), 299 (outrage religious sentiments), 352 (intentional insult) of the BNS and section 67 of the Information Technology Act at Vibhutikhand police station. "Further investigation into the matter is underway," said the DCP (East). The radical cleric has been known for making controversial statements. Soon after Delhi assembly polls in Feb, the cleric had claimed in a video to have voted for BJP. Amit Malviya had then shared the video in a post on X, saying, "Sajid Rashidi of All India Imam Association says he voted for the BJP in the Delhi Assembly election. This is not an isolated instance, and the so called 'secular' parties should be worried if Muslims also start supporting the BJP in a big way."
