Widened NH 66 to sport advance obstruction warning system

KOCHI: What if signboards along roads could warn motorists of accidents, obstructions, animal intrusions, etc., ahead and facilitate detours to help them save on time, rather than getting caught in gridlocks.
This is exactly what the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has in store, as part of its ambitious plan to install an advanced traffic management system (ATMS), for NH 66's 644km six-lane stretch from Thalappady, in Kasaragod, to Mukkola, in Thiruvananthapuram, where widening work is expected to be completed next year.
'Due to high traffic density on most stretches, ATMS will be first installed on the 26km Moothakunnam-Edappally section and extended to other reaches in a phased manner. The system has provisions for various electronic enforcement devices that help in speedy identification of incidents and effectively monitor highways.
Once the impediment is identified, a warning message will be issued to oncoming motorists using fixed variable message signs (VMS). For instance, in the case of heavy mist, messages warning drivers to reduce speed will be displayed,' a senior NHAI official told TNIE.
VMS boards can display dynamic messages to inform drivers about road conditions, traffic flow, and relay other important information. They can be either fixed or portable (trailer-mounted).

Chennai: NHAI Clears Six-Lane Flyover From Poonamallee To Maduravoyal, Full Details Inside

Last Updated: One lane will be used for piling and pier works, while 10 lanes, including service lanes, will remain open. Vehicles entering Chennai from Bengaluru, Krishnagiri, and Vellore will soon get much-needed relief. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has cleared the construction of a six-lane elevated corridor from Poonamallee to Maduravoyal, stretching 8.1km at a cost of Rs 1,250 crore. As per TOI, the project, tendered earlier this week, will feature entry and exit points only at its ends and will be toll-charged. According to NHAI officials, work is expected to begin within three months, with a completion timeline of two-and-a-half years. How Will It Change Travel? Currently, the Poonamallee–Maduravoyal stretch sees around 90,000 vehicles every day, causing long delays at busy junctions. Once complete, the new flyover is expected to transform travel time into the city. In the future, this corridor will connect with another planned 13km stretch from Outer Ring Road (ORR) to Sriperumbudur. Together, the two routes will enable commuters to cover 22km in less than 20 minutes, compared to the current one-hour slog. Project director I S Janakumaran assured that traffic movement will not be heavily affected. Construction will take place by closing one lane at a time, while leaving 10 lanes, including service lanes, open for vehicles. The Chennai Port is also expected to benefit, as the corridor will support faster cargo movement, making full use of its 135 MTPA handling capacity. Local residents have welcomed the project but voiced concerns about delays and service lanes. Many feel that the three-year construction timeline is too long and want NHAI to speed up the work while also improving service roads. Some also demanded early connectivity with the 262km Chennai–Bengaluru Expressway, so that commuters benefit immediately once the larger highway opens. This is not an isolated project. NHAI has already completed an 84km stretch of National Expressway-7 in Bengaluru, with further works underway in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The ambitious upgrades are expected to finish by 2026. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Why pay Rs 150 for traffic jams? Supreme Court slams NHAI, upholds Kerala HC order suspending toll

'Why should one pay to spend 12 hours in a traffic jam?', this sharp remark from the Supreme Court on Monday summed up the frustration of thousands of commuters stuck on Kerala's rain-battered highways. The court openly criticised the practice of collecting toll on roads that are in a poor state, leaving motorists paying not just in cash but also with their time and patience. The case before the bench, led by Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and N V Anjaria, centred on the Edappally–Mannuthy stretch of National Highway 544 in Thrissur. Once expected to take barely an hour to cross, parts of the highway now trap commuters for nearly 12 hours. Despite this ordeal, motorists are still being charged Rs 150 at the Paliyekkara toll plaza. The Kerala High Court had stepped in earlier this month, suspending toll collection for four weeks. Its August 6 order declared that motorists could not be charged when the highway was riddled with potholes, under endless repairs, and clogged with heavy congestion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More Undo Court vs. NHAI: Act of God or Negligence? Appearing for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that the jam in question had been caused by a lorry overturning, an 'act of God,' in his words. But Justice Chandran wasn't convinced. He said the accident was not just fate but the result of a lorry toppling into a pothole, making it clear that poor maintenance played a role. Mehta further argued that service roads had been provided and that heavy rains during monsoon slowed construction work. He suggested proportionate toll reduction instead of complete suspension. But the bench pushed back. As Justice Chandran remarked, 'A 12-hour ordeal goes far beyond proportional adjustment.' Live Events Lessons from Delhi's Rains The court also drew a parallel with Delhi, where a few hours of rain can paralyse the entire city. By making this comparison, the judges highlighted that such problems are not isolated to Kerala but reflect a larger issue of urban infrastructure failing under pressure. Senior advocate Jayant Muthraj, representing petitioners, argued that the NHAI had failed its responsibility to provide a motorable road. Collecting tolls in such conditions, he said, violated the principle of public trust. According to him, the High Court had suspended toll collection only as a last resort, after NHAI ignored earlier warnings and directions. Awaiting the Verdict For now, the Supreme Court has reserved its verdict. Whatever the final decision, the case touches on a deeper question: should citizens continue to pay for infrastructure that fails them so miserably? As the Chief Justice pointedly asked: 'Why should a person pay Rs 150 if it takes 12 hours to travel a road meant for one hour?' It is a question every commuter stuck in a jam would agree with.
