Metrics show UNC basketball has an advantage over fellow NCAA Tournament bubble teams
We finally made it to Selection Sunday, which officially kicks off at 6 p.m. on CBS Sports, with the North Carolina Tar Heels eagerly awaiting their NCAA Tournament fate.
UNC (22-13, 13-7 ACC) has an impressive win total, but lacks the quality wins bracketologists zero in on. North Carolina sports a lackluster 1-12 record in Quad 1 games, with its lone victory coming against UCLA in December.
The Tar Heels enjoyed a late-season spurt, highlighted by a 6-game winning streak and run to the ACC Tournament Semifinals, but they came up short against archrival Duke for a third time this season. Beating the top-seeded Blue Devils (31-3, 19-1 ACC) would quash questions about UNC's ability to beat the country's best teams, but alas, that didn't happen.
Despite the field of uncertainty surrounding North Carolina's NCAA Tournament fate, its resume stacks up well against several fellow bubble teams.
The Tar Heels are ranked 36 in the NET, 33 in KenPom, 26 in BPI, 36 in T-Rank and SOR, plus 42 in WOB. These are all ahead of fellow bubble teams in Texas, Boise State, Xavier, San Diego State, Indiana and UC Irvine.
UNC's NET ranking and BPI, in particular, are metrics the Selection Committee should focus on. North Carolina also has the country's fifth-toughest out-of-conference strength of schedule, thanks to playing National Championship contenders like Auburn, Alabama and Duke.
The Tar Heels have every reason to miss the NCAA Tournament, but also have plenty reasons to make it. UNC can play with the country's best teams, it just can't finish the job.
Look at what happened when Virginia made the 2024 NCAA Tournament. There were plenty of other teams deserving of a spot over the Cavaliers.
Will North Carolina make the Big Dance? Tune your TV and/or favorite streaming device over to CBS Sports at 6 p.m. and find out.

Panthers vs Texans: 7 Players to watch
The Carolina Panthers second preseason game on Saturday marks another test for the roster after getting blown out by the Cleveland Browns in their first outing. Head coach Dave Canales announced earlier that he expects the starting group to get even more opportunities this week, as they'll get around three drives worth of action – depending on the length of each drive, of course. There are be plenty of interesting story lines and players to watch this week, so let's breakdown a few: The second round pick had one of the most impressive rookie showings in the NFL in Week One of the Preseason. His chase down of Shedeur Sanders to collect a sack was one of the most impressive hustle plays in recent Panthers memory, as he ran over 70 yards to finish off the play. Can he build off his production in Week One with another impressive showing? This week Mays lost the position battle at center to the incumbent veteran Austin Corbett. Interestingly, in the joint practice the Panthers held with the Texans he was already seeing significant snaps at left guard. With starting left guard Damien Lewis nursing a shoulder injury and back-up Chandler Zavala also dealing with an injury of his own, it looks like Mays is stepping in to fill the void. If he can fill in at left guard as well as he did at center in 2024, the team may be able to avoid a catastrophic drop off at the position that was originally feared should neither Lewis or Zavala be available in a regular season game. The undrafted free agent rookie has gotten a lot of buzz this training camp and the hype train hasn't shown any signs of slowing down quite yet. For a team that is desperate for some help and depth in the secondary, the continued emergence of Thornton has been welcomed. This week, he faces a tough test as the Texans sport one of the deepest wide receiver rooms in the NFL at the moment. If Thornton can have another impressive showing, it may be time to consider his spot on the roster locked down. McMillan has had a magnifying glass on him the entire offseason, but even with the hyper-focused attention on him he hasn't faltered. His first catch of the preseason was an absolute beauty that could be a sign of great things to come between him and Bryce Young. In the preseason game against the Browns, McMillan was tied for the highest snap count among the team's receivers. With the Panthers starters projected to play around three drives versus the Texans, there should be plenty of opportunities for the Panthers prized first round pick to make some splash plays. This week Canales also mentioned that veteran safety Nick Scott is currently considered to be the starter opposite Tre'Von Moehrig. Scott's resume has left a lot to be desired thus far in his Panthers tenure, so the window for Richardson to usurp him is open. Can the second year player continue to build on his impressive rookie campaign and put up a good showing against the Texans talented roster? While the Panthers receiver room is loaded with depth, one player who is reportedly making plays just about every practice is Tremayne. Undrafted in 2023, Tremayne has spent most of his career on the Washington Commanders practice squad before joining the Panthers in February. The 6'4, 212lb receiver did not get many opportunities versus the Browns, as he only received 13 snaps. After a big play versus the Texans in their joint practice, has he earned a few more opportunities for the Texans? With veteran tight end Tommy Tremble is still dealing with an injury keeping him from practicing, the Panthers need to find another option behind Ja'Tavion Sanders to take the snaps at the position. Can the young tight end do enough to prove he can be a reliable fill-in?

Tim Tebow, Deion Sanders headline AP's list of best All-Americans from the last 100 years
In the last 100 years of college football, no quarterback has been more dominant than Tim Tebow. The Florida star broke the game for three seasons, passing with deadly efficiency and pounding in at least a dozen rushing touchdowns each year. That dominance led to Tebow placing in the top-5 in Heisman voting in three straight seasons, including a first-place finish in 2007. It also resulted in Tebow winning the national championship twice during his college career. Though his days at Florida are long gone, Tebow is still getting accolades for his performance there. The Associated Press on Thursday named Tebow as its first-team quarterback on its list of the best All-Americans from the past 100 years. The AP tabbed 12 writers to vote on the best All-Americans over the last century. Voters had a few rules to consider before casting their votes. Players needed to be an AP first-team All-American at least once over their college careers. A player's professional career did not factor into the voting. Quarterback was, as you might expect, going to be a crowded position. Tebow ultimately won out over Texas great Vince Young, who was named to the AP's second team on its all-century list. Here's how the rest of the team came together: AP All-America first-team offense Quarterback: Tim Tebow, Florida Running back: Barry Sanders, Oklahoma State Running back: Herschel Walker, Georgia Wide receiver: Larry Fitzgerald, Pittsburgh Wide receiver: Randy Moss, Marshall Tight end: Brock Bowers, Georgia Tackle: Orlando Pace, Ohio State Tackle: Bill Fralic, Pittsburgh Guard: John Hannah, Alabama Guard: Jim Parker, Ohio State Center: Chuck Bednarik, Penn All Purpose: Johnny Rodgers, Nebraska Kicker: Sebastian Janikowski, Florida State AP All-America first-team defense Defensive end: Hugh Green, Pittsburgh Defensive end: Randy White, Maryland Defensive tackle: Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska Defensive tackle: Bronko Nagurski, Minnesota Linebacker: Dick Butkus, Illinois Linebacker: Derrick Thomas, Alabama Linebacker: Chris Spielman, Ohio State Cornerback: Charles Woodson, Michigan Cornerback: Deion Sanders, Florida State Safety: Ronnie Lott, USC Safety: Ed Reed, Miami Punter: Tory Taylor, Iowa On the defensive side, both Deion Sanders and Ed Reed headline a dominant secondary, which also features Charles Woodson. While the AP's list skewed more recent, Dick Butkus, Randy White and Bronko Nagurski represent some of the older players named to the team. Nagurski was an All-American back in 1929. AP All-America second-team offense Quarterback: Vince Young, Texas Running back: Archie Griffin, Ohio State Running back: Tony Dorsett, Pittsburgh Wide receiver: DeVonta Smith, Alabama Wide receiver: Desmond Howard, Michigan Tight end: Keith Jackson, Oklahoma Tackle: Jonathan Ogden, UCLA Tackle: Bryant McKinnie, Miami Guard: Brad Budde, USC Guard: John Smith, Notre Dame Center: Dave Rimington, Nebraska All Purpose: Tim Brown, Notre Dame Kicker: Martin Gramatica, Kansas State AP All-America second team defense Defensive end: Bubba Smith, Michigan State Defensive end: Bruce Smith, Virginia Tech Defensive tackle: LeeRoy Selmon, Oklahoma Defensive tackle: Warren Sapp, Miami Linebacker: Jerry Robinson, UCLA Linebacker: Brian Bosworth, Oklahoma Linebacker: Lawrence Taylor, North Carolina Cornerback: Champ Bailey, Georgia Cornerback: Tyrann Mathieu, LSU Safety: Bennie Blades, Miami Safety: Al Brosky, Illinois Punter: Reggie Roby, Iowa Ohio State, Miami and Pittsburgh are among the most represented schools to be featured across both teams. All three schools have four players on the all-time All-American list.

Is Notre Dame football closing in on its quarterback decision? One pundit thinks so
The start of the season is getting closer, as Notre Dame is just over two weeks away from going on the road for a season-opening top-10 US LBM Coaches Poll matchup against the Miami Hurricanes. There are multiple starting spots that have yet to be announced, but the biggest one that we are all watching is who will be the starting quarterback: CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey. The is one insider that believes the choice could be made soon: On3's Tyler Horka. On Friday morning he posted a clip of both of them taking reps and said this weekend 'might be the one of the biggest of the year for Notre Dame' as they could be close to named its starting quarterback. All the current rumors have been that head coach Marcus Freeman, offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock and quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli are leaning towards Minchey, but obviously no decision has been made. The Irish could wait another week to let it play out, or they could end the drama and announce the starter and get ready to prep for Miami. If they are pretty much even at this point, it makes more sense to continue the battle and give them time for the guy to emerge. It's going to be a tough choice, but one that will have to eventually be made for Notre Dame.
