Brazil's Fabio breaks world record for football's most capped male player

Veteran Brazilian goalkeeper Fabio has etched his name into football history, surpassing Peter Shilton's long-standing record for most competitive appearances in men's football. The 44-year-old Fluminense shot-stopper made his 1,391st official appearance on Tuesday during his side's 2-0 victory over América de Cali in the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 16, held at Rio de Janeiro's iconic Maracanã Stadium. Fabio overtakes Shilton in list Having equaled Shilton's record of 1,390 on Saturday, Fabio went one better with a clean sheet that also helped his team progress further in the tournament. While the milestone has been acknowledged by Fluminense and several Brazilian media outlets, official confirmation from FIFA and South American governing body CONMEBOL is still pending. 'Breaking a record that has stood for so long is truly special. Sometimes, we don't grasp the magnitude of such moments,' Fabio reflected after the match, where he was honoured with a commemorative plaque and hailed by home fans chanting, 'Fabio is the best goalkeeper in Brazil.' Fluminense manager Renato Gaucho praised the goalkeeper's unwavering professionalism, stating, 'No one reaches this level without extraordinary commitment. Fabio can easily continue playing at a high level for some time.' Fabio's career highlights Fabio's remarkable career began in 1997, the same year Peter Shilton retired, and has been entirely based in Brazil. He featured 30 times for Uniao Bandeirante, played 150 games with Vasco da Gama, and spent 17 years at Cruzeiro, where he made a staggering 976 appearances. Since joining Fluminense in 2022, he has played 235 matches for the club, including their 2023 Copa Libertadores triumph and a run to the semifinals of the 2024 Club World Cup in the United States. While Shilton lists his official appearance tally at 1,387, Guinness World Records notes it as 1,390, now just behind Fabio's unprecedented figure.

After equalling the landmark held by former England stopper Peter Shilton on Saturday, the 44-year-old went one better in a 2-0 win over Colombia's America de Cali at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. Fluminense and Brazilian media have confirmed the record, but FIFA and regional body CONMEBOL are yet to declare it one. The home fans chanted, 'Fabio is the best goalkeeper in Brazil,' and he received a commemorative plaque to mark the achievement. 'No one plays so many matches without a level of professionalism like his,' said Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho. 'He'll undoubtedly continue to play for a long time .It will be difficult for another player to surpass his record.' Khalid Jamil explains Sunil Chhetri's exclusion from India preparatory camp

Bengaluru, aug 18 (UNI) The exclusion of Sunil Chhetri from Indian football team's first preparatory camp under new head coach Khalid Jamil for the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup has sparked discussion but Jamil insists the striker has not been shut out. Jamil announced his list of players for the preparatory camp on Friday with Chhetri's omission standing out. The veteran forward, who retired in June 2024 before reversing his decision in March earlier this year, remains a central figure for the Indian football team. However, Jamil gave a clear answer when asked about why Chhetri wasn't included in the preparatory camp. 'Sunil is a legend of Indian football. I have played against him, I've seen him play on numerous occasions, and he is one of my favourite players. He is a role model for Indian football, and the door is always open for him,' said Jamil. 'He's not there in this camp because we are playing a tournament which will essentially serve as a preparation for our Asian Cup Qualifiers,' he said. 'I also want to try out a few other players during this FIFA window. I had a talk with him about the same. It's always a pleasure to have a player like him in the team,' Jamil said. The Indian national football team has kicked off their preparations for the upcoming CAFA Nations Cup under newly appointed head coach Jamil. Jamil, who made his mark with Jamshedpur FC by taking back the Men of Steel among the best in the Indian Super League (ISL) and cup competitions, now steps into his dream role, leading the Blue Tigers. 'It is my pleasure to serve the country. It has always been my dream to do this, and it has now come true, so that feels very good. There is a big task ahead of us, and we've got many areas that we need to work on. I am fully aware how big a responsibility it is for me, but I feel thankful that the Federation (AIFF) felt me worthy to be entrusted with it," Jamil expressed. The challenge ahead is far greater. India are struggling in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, with just one point from their opening two matches and sitting at the bottom of the group The CAFA Nations Cup, starting August 29 in Tajikistan, gives Jamil an early chance to test his squad against opponents like Tajikistan, IR Iran and Afghanistan before the next qualifier in October. At present, 22 players have reported to the national camp in Bengaluru with more expected to join. 'It will be good for us to play against quality opponents in the CAFA Nations Cup. There is absolutely no excuse for us, as we have enough time to prepare for it,' said Jamil. 'Playing against stronger teams like Tajikistan and Iran will definitely be beneficial for us to prepare for the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers," he added. UNI BM
