MOUNT GILEAD, Ohio (WCMH) – The body of Morrow County Sheriff's Deputy Daniel Sherrer was returned to Mount Gilead on Wednesday, less than 48 hours after he was shot and killed on Memorial Day in Marengo.
The main street in downtown Mount Gilead was shut down as people lined both sides, waiting for the procession. Dozens of law enforcement vehicles escorted him from the Montgomery County Coroner's Office.

'All these people that were lined up and all the officers that showed up for all, from all the different counties to show their respect and love, it's amazing to see something in such a small area,' Morrow County resident Brittany Daniel said.
County residents said they've been in shock since Sherrer was killed, and on Wednesday, many wanted to pay their respects.
'With it being the first one to ever happen at the Morrow County Sheriff's Office, it just, it's painful,' resident Dylon Gandee said.
It was silent as everyone watched the ambulance carrying Sherrer pass. Many Mount Gilead police officers were part of the procession and the mother and grandmother of one of those officers said it's been a tough few days.

'We've always been concerned when he goes out and you never know what's going to happen and everything, but, you know, we pray, we pray for his safety,' Anita Meadows, the grandmother of a Mount Gilead police officer, said.
'It hits pretty close, a little too close,' Lena Davis, that officer's mother, said. 'It's emotional for me because it could happen to anybody.
Both Davis and Meadows said the Mount Gilead officer was close with Sherrer.
'They were great friends and he knew him personally, our grandson, so it's, you know, it's just hard for us to know that, you know, he's taking it hard, too,' Meadows said.
Even those who didn't know Sherrer personally said it's been an emotional time for everyone in the close-knit community.
'This little town, I've lived here my entire life, 32 years, and just something this tragic happening in this little of an area, I have no words,' Daniel said.

When the procession arrived in Mount Gilead, everyone watched in silence as Sherrer's body was moved from the ambulance into the funeral home. It was a powerful show of respect for Sherrer and the Morrow County Sheriff's Office.
'It means a lot,' Davis said. 'It should be this way. It should be this way. It should always be this way. I'm happy to see everybody come out to support.'
'I just thank him for his service and sacrifice,' Gandee said.
Sherrer's funeral arrangements have not yet been publicly announced.
