The Boston Celtics have been a team more known for their stars and veteran depth than up-and-coming talent over the last couple of years, but the tide shifted after Jayson Tatum ruptured his Achilles this past spring. Boston then flipped Jrue Holiday for Anfernee Simons and Kristaps Porzingis for Georges Niang, stripping their championship core for financial relief.

Tatum's injury will keep him out next season, likely eliminating the team's title chances for now. In the meantime, the Celtics can develop young talent such as No. 28 overall pick Hugo Gonzalez.
The native Spaniard notched 10 points (3-12 FG, 1-7 3 PT) with seven rebounds, three assists, and six turnovers in 27 minutes in Boston's 100-96 Summer League loss to the Miami Heat on Monday. 2023 second-round pick Jordan Walsh had a better performance on the stat sheet, tallying 13 points (5-8 FG, 1-2 3 PT) with three rebounds and one steal in 10 minutes. However, he got ejected after getting involved in a scuffle with Heat guard Pelle Larsson.

"Walsh apologized to Stevens and made sure the front office was OK after his scuffle in front of them," Manning reported. "Said that's not him."

"Joe Mazzulla rushed to him and loved it," he continued.
'I checked my phone and he was texting me, 'I love this outta you,'" Walsh said. 'Joe liked it. I don't know if Brad liked it.'
Boston acquired Walsh after the Sacramento Kings drafted him in 2023. The former Arkansas Razorback has played a total of 61 NBA games so far.

24-year-old guard Baylor Scheierman led the Celtics with 19 points (7-19 FG, 4-13 3 PT) and nine assists on Monday. Larrson topped Miami with 24 points (7-14 FG, 1-3 3 PT) and six assists.
Up next for Boston is a matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night.

Celtics Summer League standout leaves team after 3 games

LAS VEGAS — Celtics Summer League standout Charles Bassey is no longer with the team, the Celtics shared ahead of Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers. He was always slated to play just three games, the team said, and had prior obligations the rest of the way. Bassey was one of the team's most consistent performers through three games. He opened up Summer League with a 14-point, 11-rebound performance in a Celtics' win over the Memphis Grizzlies, and followed that up with a 22-point, 13-rebound, 3-block performance over the New York Knicks. In Bassey's final game with the Celtics, he recorded 10 points and 9 rebounds. Bassey wasn't initially listed on the Celtics' Summer League roster, but was a last-minute addition. Summer league head coach Matt Reynolds said that Bassey missed the live portion of the first day of practice, but joined the team shorty after. After his debut, when asked what drew him to the opportunity, Bassey cited a reason several Summer League players have pointed to this summer: 'The culture.' Bassey's departure provides Amari Williams with more opportunity Bassey, who was on a two-way contract with the San Antonio Spurs last season, seemed like he could be a good fit to bolster the Celtics' frontcourt. But his departure opens up additional opportunity for Amari Williams, whom the Celtics selected with the 46th overall pick. Williams has appeared in two games so far during Summer League, playing 22 minutes in his debut and 16 minutes in the Celtics' second game. Additionally, forward/center Kenny Lofton — who recently won MVP of the Chinese Basketball Association — could see increased minutes in Bassey's absence. Branden Carlson makes up for lost time as he helps Thunder clinch Summer League playoffs

Running a pick-and-roll with Nikola Topic, Branden Carlson showed off his hops when he jumped in the air and threw down the alley-oop. Everybody has talked about how much better the former would look with a seven-footer. The latter showed why those talks were right as they cosplayed as prime Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. Carlson finished with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting and seven rebounds. He shot 4-of-6 from 3 and went 1-of-1 on free throws. He also had two blocks. The Oklahoma City Thunder enjoyed a 92-75 win over the Orlando Magic. It helped them reach a perfect 4-0 record in Las Vegas and clinch a 2025 Summer League playoff spot. An ankle injury cost Carlson the beginning of the Summer League. He sat out the Thunder's first five games but had a productive absence when he signed a two-way deal during it. The 26-year-old showed off why they were so determined to keep him on their roster when they tendered a qualifying offer. Against a short-handed Magic squad, Carlson made up for lost time. He dominated at every spot on the floor. The stretch big was a textbook kick-out option and the seven-footer's size helped him finish through a packed paint with dunks. The Thunder have given fans reasons to watch these final Summer League games. Carlson flashed throughout last season and dominated in the G League. His combination of size and shooting caused broadcaster Isiah Thomas to spend most of the second half wondering why nobody else saw his talent as a 2024 undrafted player. "It felt great. Missed being out on the court. It's good to be out there and play some games again," Carlson said. "... I felt like I just went out there and played my game. I've been with some of these guys around, so I kinda know how to play with each other. So I felt ready and easy to get right back into the groove." If the Thunder collect two more wins to get a Summer League ring, Carlson will likely play a big role in that. With Topic and Ajay Mitchell likely done the rest of the way, OKC's two two-way players in Carlson and Brooks Barnhizer must step up.

Red Sox Listed As Landing Spot For $8 Million Rival Slugger, Per Insider

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox have been through quite the roller-coaster ride of a season so far. They've had low moments, including the drama that surrounded Rafael Devers and led to his eventual trade. But they've also had high moments, including the recent winning streak that's placed them back in the postseason race. With Boston winning so much, it's hard to imagine it doing anything but buying at the trade deadline. There are a few holes on the roster, including on the pitching staff and at first base, that the Red Sox could look to upgrade. FanSided's MLB insider, Robert Murray, recently suggested the Red Sox could land a "rare" intra-division trade with the Baltimore Orioles to acquire slugger Ryan O'Hearn this month. O'Hearn plays some outfield, but he would likely be used solely as a first baseman in Boston. BALTIMORE, MD - JULY 12: Ryan O'Hearn #32 of the Baltimore Orioles runs to first base during a baseball game against the Miami Marlins at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on July 12, 2025 in... BALTIMORE, MD - JULY 12: Ryan O'Hearn #32 of the Baltimore Orioles runs to first base during a baseball game against the Miami Marlins at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on July 12, 2025 in Baltimore, Maryland. More"The Orioles have already made one intra-division trade. Why not another? The Red Sox are in position to buy at the deadline and with the right series of moves, could be a World Series contender even after trading Rafael Devers," Murray wrote. "O'Hearn would give them certainty throughout the season at first base and bolster the lineup. It's a move that makes plenty of sense, with Josh Naylor of the Arizona Diamondbacks looming as another potential fit." If the Red Sox can make an intra-division trade work without overpaying, O'Hearn would be a solid fit at first base. Boston could slot him in the lineup as a temporary solution to its issue at the position. When Triston Casas returns next year, the Red Sox could move on from O'Hearn. But for now, adding a player like the Orioles' slugger would be a massive improvement in the lineup. It's the kind of move that would help take the Red Sox from a potential contender to a legit contender. More MLB: Cubs Urged To Swing Massive Trade For $4 Million Star Closer
