NEW DELHI: Two individuals were arrested in Tripura's Khowai district for allegedly attacking BJP workers who were listening to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Mann Ki Baat radio programme, with chief minister Manik Saha directing police to take strict action against those involved in the incident.
At least seven BJP workers were injured in the attack, with three requiring hospitalization at BGP Hospital in Agartala. The attackers also set fire to ten motorcycles and two vehicles belonging to BJP workers.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Khowai, Kudiarasu, confirmed that two suspects were arrested based on the FIR, while two others were brought in for questioning. The arrested individuals will face court proceedings on Monday.
BJP's Mandal president for Asharambari Assembly constituency, Jayanta Debbarma, filed an FIR naming 30 people as suspects in the attack.
Chief minister Saha held BJP's alliance partner Tipra Motha Party (TMP) responsible for the violence. The arrests came after his strong message to the police regarding the incident.
"Strongly condemn the violent & undemocratic attack by TIPRA Motha party workers during Hon'ble PM Narendra Modi Ji's #MannKiBaat programme at Asharambari," Saha stated in a Facebook post.

BJP, Congress trade barbs as Rahul says economy is dead

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's claim on Thursday that mirrored US president Donald Trump's statement that the Indian economy is 'dead ' triggered a war of words with the ruling BJP, which said that the world recognizes India's achievements even as Gandhi tried to run it down. BJP, Congress trade barbs as Rahul says economy is dead 'Yes, he (Trump) is right, Everybody knows this except the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister. Everybody knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy. I am glad that President Trump has stated a fact... The entire world knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy...,' Gandhi told journalists outside Parliament. Later on, in a post on X , he listed his criteria for his view on the state of the Indian economy. Trump's overnight comments were made in the context of India and Russia's bilateral trade. After imposing a 25% tariff on Indian exports to the US and an additional penalty for buying Russian oil, Trump said on Truth Social: 'I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care…' . He also alleged that tariffs in India are 'too high' and 'among the highest in the world'. Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat slammed Gandhi for his comments. 'Contrary to your political career, Rahul Gandhi, India's economy is not dead — it is fully alive and moving forward with strong momentum,' he said. In his statement, Shekhawat said that during the tenure of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government India was counted among the 'Fragile Five' countries, and today India is now counted among the 'Robust Five'. 'India's economy is not only setting new standards of stability and growth, but it is also firmly moving towards becoming the world's third-largest economy,' he added. Sambit Patra, a Lok Sabha lawmaker of the BJP, said on X, 'Rahul Gandhi has crossed all limits—publicly endorsing Donald Trump's slur that India is a 'dead economy'. Whose side is he really on?' 'While the world recognises India's aspiration, achievement, and wellbeing, Rahul Gandhi seems intent on running it down. IMF just upgraded India's growth forecast: 6.9% for 2025, the fastest among major economies.. World Bank calls India the 'standout growth story' of the decade. Inflation is at a 6-year low. PMI is at a 17.5-year high. Rahul Gandhi is attempting to chip away at India's collective spirit of its ambition & achievements but he's simply out of sync with a nation chasing its dreams with determination. Shameful!!' Patra said. While no other senior Congress leader commented on Trump's statement, party leader Jairam Ramesh said that the Indian economy has never really recovered from the twin shocks of a 'bizarre demonetisation' and a fundamentally flawed 'GST' (goods andservices tax) . 'The growth rate of the Indian economy will simply not accelerate with current levels of private corporate investment and current levels of private consumption. The Modi government's own policies are responsible for this twin deficit,' he said Congress MP Rajiv Shukla, however, took a different position and told the media, 'It is incorrect for Trump to say that the Indian economy is dead.' Shukla added that economic reforms were ushered in by the Narsimha Rao government and the UPA government and the current government has taken more steps. 'In no way, our economy is weak,' he said Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju cited Shukla's comment and said on X, 'Now, a senior Congress leader Rajiv Shukla ji is also speaking in our country's favour! Indian economy will never be dead.' Calling the Leader of the Opposition , or LoP, an 'LoB' -- 'Leader Opposing Bharat'-- former Union minister and BJP MP Anurag Thakur said, 'Rahul Gandhi's job is only to oppose India. Anyone from around the world makes an anti-India statement, Rahul catches hold of it and starts speaking without thinking... The most popular leader in the world is PM Modi. Perhaps this is what Rahul Gandhi cannot digest, because he has only seen the 'lost decade of opportunities'. In Rahul Gandhi's language, the 'dead decade of opportunities'...'

BJP says Congress should apologise for 'Hindu terror' claims

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday welcomed the acquittal of all the seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case and attacked the Congress, accusing it of coming up with the theory of 'Hindu terror' to appease its 'Muslim votebank', and demanded an apology from the leadership of the Opposition party. The Congress hit back, accusing the BJP of 'polarising' every issue. BJP says Congress should apologise for 'Hindu terror' claims Nearly 17 years after the blast in Muslim-dominated Malegaon in Maharashtra claimed six lives in 2008, a special NIA court in Mumbai acquitted all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit on Thursday, noting there was 'no reliable and cogent evidence' against them. 'The Congress can go to any extent to appease its vote bank. This case was a well-calculated conspiracy of the party for sheer vote-bank politics,' BJP lawmaker and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters after the court's verdict. He slammed Congress veterans and former home ministers P Chidambaram and Sushilkumar Shinde for promoting the idea of saffron and Hindu terrorism. Chidambaram used the term while addressing the annual conference of DGPs and IGPs on August 25, 2010, he said. 'There was no evidence against any of the accused. Colonel Purohit, who fought against terrorism in Kashmir, was accused. Pragya Thakur was accused of using her motorcycle in the blast. She was tortured so much that she could not walk after that. This was a Congress conspiracy for sheer vote-bank politics,' Prasad said, demanding an apology from the Congress leadership. On Wednesday, Union home minister Amit Shah during a special discussion on Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha had slammed the Congress for coining the term Hindu terror, while asserting that 'Hindus can never be terrorists'. Welcoming the court verdict, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in a post on X said: 'Terrorism was never saffron, is not and will never be.' The RSS, BJP's ideological fount, also hailed the verdict, saying the truth has been clarified by the court decision regarding the Malegaon blast case. 'Some individuals, driven by personal interests and political motives, misused power in a malicious attempt to associate Hinduism and the entire Hindu community with terrorism. Through a lengthy judicial process and based on facts, the court has today, with its decision, nullified those baseless allegations,' RSS chief spokesperson Sunil Ambekar said. Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde, who is also the president of Shiv Sena, an NDA partner, said the verdict has wiped off the stigma on the Hindu community. 'Truth is never defeated. After a long battle of seventeen years, a special court has acquitted seven alleged accused in the Malegaon bomb blast case. It is true that justice was delayed, but it has once again been proven that truth is never defeated,' Shinde wrote on X. Hitting back at the BJP, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge told reporters: 'They (the BJP) polarise everything. There was no good prosecution, good evidence was not collected… how should this matter be let go, if this is what the government has in mind, then what do they do on the prosecution side?' His party colleague Digviyaya Singh dismissed BJP's charge, saying the Congress never coined the term saffron terror. 'There is no terrorism on the basis of religion. There is neither Hindu terrorism nor Islamic terrorism. Every religion is the embodiment of love, faith, truth and non-violence. There are only a few people who use religion as a weapon of hatred. But you keep saying that the term Hindu terrorism was given by the Congress. You are absolutely wrong,' Singh told reporters. Maharashtra Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal asked the state government if it will move the higher court against the verdict to ensure justice is delivered in the Malegaon case. 'As soon as the verdict of the 2006 bomb blast was announced, the state government challenged it before the Supreme Court. Will the state government show the same will in this case, as both were the act of terrorism and the perpetrators of the cases should face justice,' he said, referring to the recent acquittal of convicts in the 2006 Mumbai blasts case. The top court set aside the HC order. Speaking to reporters in the Parliament complex, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said, 'Will the Modi government and the Maharashtra government challenge the verdict in Supreme Court? Or will they continue their hypocrisy on terrorism?' (With inputs from Mumbai bureau)

Section of teachers want to skip BLO duty: ‘Scared of our safety'

The remarks on Booth Level Officers (BLOs) made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as well as Opposition BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, amid talks of the impending Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, have raised concerns among teachers who are deputed as BLOs by the Election Commission. Some of the teachers are apprehensive about their security while doing the BLO duty amid the politically charged climate in the state. 'The EC is assuring proper security to us, but we don't know if that would be enough. Such political war of words creates panic and tension in rural areas of West Bengal, and we will end up being the target of voters. So, we have decided not to take up the BLO duty,' Neelkantha Ghosh, a secondary school teacher, said. Ghosh was referring to remarks made by the chief minister as well as BJP MLA Adhikari. At an administrative review meeting in Birbhum three days ago, the chief minister said the BLOs should 'ensure that not a single name is removed from the voter's list' when the EC conducts the SIR in the state. Telling BLOs not to harass the voters during the survey, she reminded them that they are officials of the state government and work for the Election Commission only for a brief period during the elections. The chief minister also urged people to protest if the BLO deletes their names from the voters' list. On the other hand, BJP's Adhikari has alleged that a large number of Rohingya and illegal Bangladesh nationals have been enlisted in the electoral roll, and asked the BLOs to take a lead role in deleting the names of illegal immigrants and 'fictitious' voters from the voters' list. The BJP leader has also complained to the EC against the chief minister, saying 'her attempt to intimidate and manipulate the electoral process by instructing BLOs is an unauthorized attempt to dilute the voters' lists for political gain'. To resist getting deployed as BLOs, over a thousand teachers and non-teaching staff of non-government aided schools have come together to form an outfit, BLO-duty Protirodh Mancha. The outfit in a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal has sought exemption from BLO duty, citing workload pressure due to the newly introduced semester exams in schools. 'The teachers are for the development of students. We should concentrate on their education, not on other work. We have already been assigned too many non-educational work. That should not be increased,' said another teacher, Srimanta Dhara. According to Ghosh, due to semester exams, it would be difficult for them to take part in the SIR, which can be held as early as August. 'How can we be engaged in such a huge task during the semester examination. So, our demand is to keep the teachers out of the process for the revision of voters' list,' he added. A government employee, on condition of anonymity, said, 'Not only teachers, we are also afraid of our security during revision of the electoral roll. Teachers can raise their voice easily as more than 80 per cent of them are partially dependent on the government funds. We are straightway dependent on the state government, and if the head of the government threatens us, where will we go?' Meanwhile, a senior officer in the State Chief Electoral Office said, 'We are arranging sufficient security arrangements for all the BLOs. But we are not divulging what type of arrangements.' According to the officer, the Election Commission would need over 80,000 BLOs for the revision of the electoral rolls. 'If the government employees, including the teachers, panic, then it would be difficult to make the final list of BLOs for the revision. Our CEO met the Chief Election Commissioner in Delhi. He will return on Friday. After that, we will make our final plan,' the officer added.
