Is a long-term hedge fund strategy possible in this market?

There has never been so much brinkmanship from a U.S. administration in modern times. The first month of executive orders has produced a cyclone of speculation and a great deal of action and reaction. The U.S. recently enacted tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China. Within one day, the first two were paused.
Such moves have injected a great deal of volatility into markets. Conflicting business policies continue to add to the uncertainty and volatility. How can hedge fund managers hold to a medium- to long-term strategy in a world where so much is uncertain? In this article, we look at how fund managers have been preparing and will continue to respond by lowering their beta exposure.
The current state of hedge fund activity
Hedge funds began the year divesting from equities. This culminated in a selloff the Friday before the new tariffs where hedge funds 'sold nine of 11 sectors in the S&P,' reported Bloomberg. The most-sold groups included:
Consumer discretionary
Industrials
Financials
Energy
Communication services
Information technology
Meanwhile, retail investors bet the opposite. As fund managers sold stocks, retail investors poured $2.1 billion into equities. The market dropped upon news of the tariffs, though less than expected. Futures fell — the Nasdaq composite, 2.35%, and the S&P, 1.7%. It is clear everyone is reading the room differently and holds a wide variety of views on the long-term health of the U.S. economy.
On the one hand, JP Morgan Chase announced that it expected tariffs to lower U.S. growth by 0.5%-1% and raise inflation by that same amount. On the other, a Feb. 3 Gallup poll found consumers buoyant. Sixty-one percent expect stocks to rise in value, the most since Gallup began including that question in 2001.
Yet, is it worth asking how useful projections, even when given sweeping tariffs, can be paused the next day? What is the long-term effect of those partnerships?
Reuters asked fund managers why they were not more aggressive in the administration's first few weeks. Several said they were hesitant to 'get sucked in,' which appears to be trumping the fear of missing out. Many are hedging and investing in bonds and treasuries.
"Either inflation comes down and you get hit on margins, or it doesn't, and the Fed hits you because it doesn't cut (rates)," Matt Smith, investment director at Ruffer LLP told Reuters. "We are at our lowest equity weight."
Hedge funds have been readying for this market
Hedge funds prepared for this presidency with their highest borrowing levels since 2010. They expect the dollar to continue to rise and protectionist policies to have some upsides for the U.S. economy. They also expect to benefit from the Trump administration's promise to maintain lower taxes — notably, corporate taxes and the capital gains tax, via extension of the expiring 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) – though the administration's proposal on taxing of carried interest is not a favorable one for fund managers.
Hedge funds are adjusting their strategies in four ways:
Reducing their beta exposure
As they say, predictions are difficult, especially about the future. Right now, it feels even more fraught. As tariffs and the president's 60+ executive orders (and counting) show, we can likely expect many quick policy decisions and reversals without warning.
In response, Reuters reports that hedge fund managers are reducing the portion of their portfolio dedicated to beta investments to between 15%-5%, down from an average of 20%.
Managers want less exposure to technology stocks
Tariffs aside, stock market routs like the one that followed news of China's AI DeepSeek have managers on edge. As DeepSeek panic spread, the chipmaker Nvidia shed $600 billion in market cap. Since the industry has shifted to AI models, fortunes seem to rise and fall faster.
Managers want less exposure to emerging markets
The administration's protectionist policies seem certain to favor the dollar at the expense of our trading partners. They also favor reshoring operations. This makes it difficult to gauge the long-term value of foreign investments, even if they may be more attractive.
Managers are bullish on alternative investments
Fifty-six percent of hedge funds now have multiple managers and more capacity to shift into alternative investment strategies. For example, real estate and healthcare – from our conversations, hedge fund managers feel all the protectionist policies and declining trade make real estate and healthcare better investments.
Consider the implications of new investment strategies
As hedge funds shift their investing strategies, there may be a learning curve for firms entering new territory. Managers newly entering commercial real estate will find that the standard capital stack has changed over the past few years, and mezzanine debt is preferred over equity. There also may be new tax consequences to consider. For example, municipal bonds are taxed federally unless they are tax-free, in which case they are probably still subject to state and local taxation. By Raphael Satter WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase knew as far back as January about a customer data leak at an outsourcing company connected to a larger breach estimated to cost up to $400 million, six people familiar with the matter told Reuters. At least one part of the breach, publicly disclosed in a May 14 SEC filing, occurred when an India-based employee of the U.S. outsourcing firm TaskUs was caught taking photographs of her work computer with her personal phone, according to five former TaskUs employees. Three of the employees and a person familiar with the matter said Coinbase was notified immediately. The ex-employees said they were briefed on the matter by company investigators or colleagues who witnessed the incident in the Indian city of Indore, noting that the woman and a suspected accomplice were alleged to have been feeding Coinbase customer information to hackers in return for bribes. The ex-employees and person familiar with the matter said more than 200 TaskUs employees were soon fired in a mass layoff that drew Indian media attention. Coinbase had previously blamed "support agents overseas" for the breach, which it estimated could cost up to $400 million. Although the link between TaskUs and the breach was previously alleged in a lawsuit filed last week in federal court in Manhattan, details of the incident, reported here for the first time, raise further questions over when Coinbase first learned of the incident. Coinbase said in the May SEC filing that it knew contractors accessed employee data "without business need" in "previous months." Only when it received an extortion demand on May 11 did it realize that the access was part of a wider campaign, the company said. In a statement to Reuters on Wednesday, Coinbase said the incident was recently discovered and that it had "cut ties with the TaskUs personnel involved and other overseas agents, and tightened controls." Coinbase did not disclose who the other foreign agents were. TaskUs said in a statement that two employees had been fired early this year after they illegally accessed information from a client, which it did not identify. "We immediately reported this activity to the client," the statement said. "We believe these two individuals were recruited by a much broader, coordinated criminal campaign against this client that also impacted a number of other providers servicing this client." The person familiar with the matter confirmed that Coinbase was the client and that the incident took place in January. Reuters could not determine whether any arrests have been made. Airlines lower air cargo forecast amid escalating trade war

The International Air Transport Association on Monday downgraded its guidance for air cargo volumes and airline revenue from cargo as global tariffs unleashed by the new Trump administration roil freight markets. The trade association said air cargo demand is now expected to grow 0.7% year over year, with member airlines hauling 76 million U.S. tons versus the previous projection in Dece mber of 80 million tons. In 2024, air cargo volume grew 12%, an all-time high, based on an average of data sources. Six months ago, IATA predicted cargo volume for passenger and all-cargo airlines would grow 5.8% this year. The U.S. cancellation of the de minimis exemption, which allowed parcels valued below $800 to enter the country without duty or complex customs procedures, for China and Hong Kong is also weighing down cargo volumes as e-commerce retailers shift from direct-to-consumer shipping to fulfilling orders from U.S. warehouses stocked through less expensive ocean shipments. Cargo revenues for member airlines are expected to decline 4.7% to $142 billion as global economic growth slows due to the proliferation of tariffs and other protectionist measures that tend to constrain cross-border trade, IATA said. IATA's December projection was for $157 billion in cargo revenue. The cargo yield is also expected to decline by 5.2%, reflecting a combination of slower demand growth and lower oil prices. When jet fuel prices rise, airlines add fuel surcharges that typically include extra profit margin above the new estimates suggest the air cargo market could see a big slump in the second half of the year that cancels the normal peak season. IATA recently reported that cargo demand remained strong, growing 5.8% in April from the same month last year. Cargo traffic, which includes a distance component on top of tonnage, increased 2.4% year over year during the first quarter, according to IATA data. Analysts attribute growth so far to businesses front-loading orders from overseas suppliers to import merchandise before announced tariffs kick in. That's what happened as shippers anticipated sweeping tariffs from the Trump administration before they landed in early April. After the White House paused tariffs for 90 days to foster negotiations and lowered tariffs on Chinese goods to 30%, ocean and air volumes to the U.S. have increased again as importers load up on goods before tariffs swing up again. Many countries have retaliated against the U.S. tariffs or plan to do so again when the U.S. tariffs resume next month. From an overall passenger and cargo perspective, airlines are expected to eke out a profit as total revenues grow by 1.3% versus a 1% increase in total expenses. Strong employment and cooling inflation are expected to maintain passenger demand but at a lower rate than previously revenue is now projected to be $979 billion in 2025, down from $1 trillion estimated in December. The TACO codename used by Wall Street traders to describe President Donald Trump is more likely to make him stick with his international tariffs 'just to prove a point.' The nickname— short for 'Trump Always Chickens OUT' — came about because of the president's habit of making tariff threats, resulting in a drop in the markets, only for him to walk the threat back and see the markets rebound. 'We think that, unfortunately, as the so-called TACO trade becomes more viral, it becomes more likely that Trump will stick to higher tariffs just to prove a point,' Joachim Klement of investment bank Panmure Liberum told Reuters. The acronym was coined by Financial Times columnist Robert Armstrong writing about Trump's so-called 'Liberation Day' in April, which caused the markets to hit historic lows before he ordered a 90-day pause one week later. It led to record highs. 'The US administration does not have a very high tolerance for market and economic pressure, and will be quick to back off when tariffs cause pain,' Armstrong said. 'This is the TACO theory: Trump Always Chickens Out.' It did not go down well with Trump, who responded with fury when asked about the acronym last week. 'That's a nasty question,' he said. 'To me, that's the nastiest question.' 'You call that chickening out? It's called negotiation,' Trump said, visibly irked. Since the nickname took off online, people shared AI-generated memes of the president in a chicken suit. The president was caught off guard and was unaware of the term, according to CNN. 'He thought the reporter was calling him a chicken,' a White House official told the outlet. Trump was reportedly irritated that his team did not tell him about the phrase as it gained traction in financial circles and the media. 'It clearly bothered him, primarily because it demonstrated a lack of understanding about how he actually utilizes those threats for leverage,' a person familiar with the matter told CNN. 'But obviously he's not a guy who looks kindly on weakness, so the idea anyone would think that with respect to his actions isn't received well.' The frustration follows the Court of International Trade's ruling that the Trump administration must dismantle the 'reciprocal' tariff policy. The federal court ruled he lacked the authority to create it, which the White House immediately appealed. The administration won a reprieve, which means the tariffs will be reinstated while the case makes its way through the courts, but uncertainty looms over the economy.
