What went right for ABVP, what didn't for Left at JNU

Time of India28-04-2025

New Delhi: After a decade, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad made a dent in student politics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, long considered a Left bastion. In the recent student union elections, while the leftist combo of AISA and DSF retained the posts of president, vice-president and general secretary, their victories came with razor-thin margins: just 272 votes for president, 34 for vice-president and 114 for general secretary. ABVP clinched the post of joint secretary by a margin of 85 votes.
Last year, the margins were significantly wider when AISA, SFI, AISF and DSF contested together under a single banner, with the difference between the United Left's presidential candidate and ABVP's being 982 votes, that for vice-president being 755 votes, for general secretary 998 votes and for joint secretary, 397 votes. NOTA votes rose from 894 last year to 1,023 this year, indicating some illusion with the student political groups.

A closer look at the results reveals that the split in the Left, with SFI forming a separate alliance with a faction of BAPSA, AISF and PSA, critically fractured the anti-ABVP vote. Had the Left fought unitedly, it would have secured not only more comfortable victories but also not lost the one seat to ABVP. SFI-BAPSA's presidential candidate Tayabba secured 918 votes, while its general secretary nominee Ramnivas collected 675 votes — numbers that, when added to the United Left's tally, would have widened the margin with ABVP substantially.
Nevertheless, ABVP's performance cannot be understated. If its claims to winning nearly half of the councillor seats is true, there could be a tangible shift in JNU's campus politics. United Left has refuted the claim, however, accusing ABVP of inflating its numbers by including independent candidates in its tally. It wasn't just the sciences and management schools —traditional ABVP strongholds — that tilted in its favour. ABVP's victories in Left-dominated School of International Studies and School of Social Sciences, where they secured four of 10 cumulative seats, signifies a rise.
The last time the RSS-affiliated student organisation won a central post in JNUSU was in 2016. Since then, the Left has dominated fully. One reason for the changing power dynamic shown by the 2025 polls is the evolving student demographics. Since JNU adopted CUET, the centralised entrance exam system, the incoming student batches are often seen as less ideologically driven and more diverse in their backgrounds. Many of them do not align with Left politics, creating a condition for ABVP to cash in. Another important factor was ABVP's ability to navigate the internal divisions within the Left.
Also, the Northeast factor played a significant role this year. Disillusioned by what they perceived as inadequate representation by both Left and right outfits, the Northeast students fielded their own independent presidential candidate, Yari Nayam. They had felt let down after the Barak Hostel, which they claimed was exclusively built for Northeast students, was opened up for others. In the event, Nayam secured 1,184 votes — a considerable number.
The central panel election results underline the new competitiveness: ABVP's Vaibhav secured a thin win for joint secretary, having got 1,518 votes to PSA's Nigam who polled 1,256. The 85-vote margin showed how close the race was and how the fragmented Left votes benefited ABVP.
The fresher batch's arrival also played a crucial role. New students, less tied to older ideological loyalties and more focused on practical campus issues, proved to be swing voters. Their preference for alternatives to the traditional Left likely bolstered ABVP's numbers, not only in the central panel but also in councillor elections.
The
2025 JNUSU elections
signal a big shift in JNU's political landscape. While the Left has retained key posts, its once-unassailable grip on the student union's power structure was shown as weakened. ABVP's rise, fuelled by fresh demographics, internal fractures in the Left and a more competitive electoral field, seems to mark the beginning of more equal contests in the university.

‘I have done schooling with you, graduated with Babu, and work under Rahul': Revanth to Modi

Hyderabad: Recalling an interesting exchange involving him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the last NITI Aayog meeting in the national capital, Revanth said that Modi told him while pointing at Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu that his 'friend' had come. In response, Revanth Reddy told the PM, "I have done my schooling (Revanth was a member of ABVP when his roots were with RSS) with you, graduated with N Chandrababu Naidu (he was in TDP under Naidu), and work under Rahul Gandhi." On Sunday, Revanth shared this while addressing the release of the Telugu version of Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya's autobiography "Prajala Kathe Naa Atmakatha" (The Story of the people is my autobiography) on Sunday. Sharing 40 years of his personal relationship with him and Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, Revanth Reddy said the journey of Dattatreya, "from Gowliguda Basti to Haryana Governor had many ups and downs." Revanth Reddy said that at the national level, former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee was known as the 'Ajaata Shathru' (person with no enemies) and earned the respect of leaders from across the political spectrum, whether he held any position or not. Similarly, Dattatreya had earned such respect from the leaders cutting across the political parties in Telangana with his friendly demeanor towards all. The Chief Minister said he had never seen Governors of several states on a single stage. "It looks like a parade of Governors. Former-president Ramnath Kovind, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh N Chandrababu Naidu, Union and state ministers from both the Telugu states attending his book release event reflected the respect he had earned from all hues of the political spectrum. Revanth Reddy reminisced about how Dattatreya's initiative, Alai Balai, played a significant role in uniting political leaders and providing inspiration during the separate Telangana movement. He also mentioned his collaboration with Kishan Reddy during that time. With a touch of humor and gesturing towards several ministers from his cabinet who were present at the event, he remarked, "It seems like I could hold a cabinet meeting right here." While coming to the event, no one would have felt it was a BJP meeting but an event of a respectable leader. The Chief Minister said former minister late P Janardhan Reddy and Bandaru Dattatreya stand out among the leaders from the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Both were owned by people as they used to respond and tried to solve their problems by calling the officials concerned. He recalled, how Dattatreya while serving as an MP, used to issue letters for TTD Darshan, railway reservations, telephone connections, and LPG allocations to hardworking party and Sangh workers. There was a dearth of such leadership in the twin cities, he said and stressed that the leaders from the twin cities should emulate the spirit of Janardhan Reddy and Bandaru Dattatreya. The Chief Minister promised to emulate the same while interacting with people and resolving their problems. He said he would work for the development of Telangana. Regarding Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy, he said, he would "continue to respect' him but also 'question him occasionally." Earlier, he felicitated the Haryana Governor, the lady Governor, and Vasantha Kumari, the widow of veteran BJP-Jan Sangh leader and former Sikkim Governor V Rama Rao. Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, Revenue Minister Dr. Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, BC Welfare and Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, Road and Buildings Minister Komati Reddy Venkat Reddy, former Congress chief, and MP Keshava Rao were among those who participated in the event.

Spirit of unity among Telugus paramount: CM

Hyderabad: Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, while affirming that the Telugu community held a unique position in the country, urged leaders from the Telugu states to jointly work with a spirit of unity and togetherness to take Telugu to number one position in the country's growth. He was addressing a gathering at the release of the Telugu version of Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya's autobiography 'Prajala Kathe Naa Atmakatha' (The story of the people of Telangana is my autobiography) here on Sunday. Naidu recalled that Telangana was previously part of the Nizam State, while Andhra Pradesh was under the Madras Presidency. Initially, both regions were united as Andhra Pradesh. Eventually, they became two separate states: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. However, he emphasized the importance of unity, stating that "Telugu jathi okkate" (Telugus are one) should always be our guiding principle. He noted that while political parties may have differing opinions and some leaders may have delivered effectively during their tenure, the spirit of unity among Telugus remained paramount. The country's future looks promising under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Just as the Jewish diaspora earned a name for itself in the world, "there is a need to take forward the Telugu people into a brighter future." For this, "we need to emulate the spirit of Bandaru Dattatreya," he observed. Striking a note of nostalgia at the event's venue, he recalled how efforts had been made to invite former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee to inaugurate the HI-TEC City, adding Cyberabad district to the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. However, while IT companies were housed in Cyberabad, "Silparamama and Silpakala Vedika were established to showcase the Telugu culture and traditions," he added. Naidu stated that Bandaru Dattatreya had endeared himself to everyone and exemplified the qualities of a true gentleman. The Chief Minister remarked that it took courage for a politician to declare that his story was the story of the people. This statement reflects a deep connection and bond with the community forged over decades of his life's journey. The Chief Minister stated that while Dattatreya might be associated with Hindutva, his true essence embodied the spirit of Bharatiya culture. He exemplified the unity in diversity that characterized our country. This quality had elevated him from an ordinary activist to a national-level leader. Reflecting on Dattatreya's contributions during the Emergency period and his dedicated service as an RSS pracharak during the Diviseema Cyclone, the Chief Minister acknowledged the numerous challenges he had faced throughout his journey. He brought the spirit of unity and diversity, launching the Alai Balai programme to bring leaders of all parties together and made him a friend of all without an enemy in the two Telugu states. His political life will be remembered as an ideal life, he noted. Naidu, recalling the foreward of PM Modi wrote to the book, said he held several positions in the party, MLA, MP, Union Minister, and governor of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. However, he remained an ordinary worker, he said. Naidu recalled that he had lost count of the letters Dattatreya had written to him when he was the chief minister of united Andhra Pradesh. He earned the rare opportunity to work with great personalities in the Sangh and Vajpayee, Murli Manohar Joshi, LK Advani, M Venkaiah Naidu, Rajnath Singh, and Narendra Modi. However, he remained leading an ordinary life. Further, he noted how Dattatreya worked for the development of Hyderabad. Besides Union Minister Kishan Reddy, Rajya Sabha MP Dr. K Laxman, Tripura Governor, and former BJP state chief Indrasena Reddy contributed to the development of Hyderabad He said that the autobiography of Dattatreya, detailing life experiences of working in the southern and northern India would be an inspiration, setting an example to the people and future generations.

Need to reach out to every home, unite Hindus: RSS chief Bhagwat

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday exhorted its members to reach out to every family and work to unite all Hindus, asserting that the goal is to build a society that is free of inequalities like casteism and is aware of its responsibility towards the nation. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief, who arrived here on Saturday on a two-day visit, made the remarks while speaking to volunteers at the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya School in Nawabganj. "We should have contact with every family in the 'shakha' area. "Work has to be done to unite all Hindus. There should be 'sanskar' (values) in every household and harmony in families so that the Sanatan tradition can be re-established in every home," he said. On Sunday, Bhagwat held four meetings with Sangh officials where the functioning of 'shakhas' and service work conducted among students were discussed along with other issues. Bhagwat said that the RSS "works for personality development. Personal development means realising one's responsibility towards the family as well as society, nation and the entire human race, i.e. the world". "We say that the world is a family. As the Sangh grew, it expanded its scope and expanded its work in various areas of social life through its workers," he said. "Today we are in the centenary year of the Sangh. On the basis of Panch Parivartan, an effort is being made to move towards a big change in the entire society -- a society that is aware of its responsibility towards the nation, a society that builds its lifestyle in accordance with the environment; "A society that is free from the inequality of casteism, where the entire society has equal rights on temples, water reservoirs, crematoriums," he said. Swayamsevaks are being trained in Kanpur from May 21, and the camp will conclude on June 10, RSS office bearers in Kanpur said. Dattatreya Hosabale, the general secretary of the RSS, has been in Kanpur for the past two days and is providing training to volunteers on building a "society that transcends caste barriers", they said.
