Oklahoma's John Mateer among College Sports Wire's top quarterbacks for 2025
The Oklahoma Sooners have a big season ahead of them. They're in need of a big bounce-back season after going 6-7 in 2024 and Brent Venables and Jim Nagy believe they've brought in the right pieces to course-correct the program.
The addition of John Mateer has reinvigorated the hope and optimism surrounding the Oklahoma Sooners. Not everything that went wrong last year was on the quarterback position, but the lack of experience kept the Sooners offense from overcoming the bevy of injuries OU dealt with at wide receiver and along the offensive line.
Mateer's experience and reported leadership gives the Sooners a chance to see a significant jump in their win total in 2025. He's in his third year in Ben Arbuckle's system and in his first season as a starter in 2024 (he sat behind the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Cam Ward), Mateer put up nearly 4,000 yards of total offense and led the nation with 44 total touchdowns.
He'll need to make a jump in his play to have a similar impact for the Sooners, but by all accounts, he's looked really good this spring against the Oklahoma Sooners' defense. Heading into 2025, he's considered one of the best quarterbacks in college football. Patrick Conn of College Sports Wire ranked his top 12 quarterbacks for 2025 and Mateer came in at No. 6.
John Mateer is the first quarterback on the list who is playing with a new team in 2025. He followed offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, who left Washington State to join the Oklahoma Sooners staff. You might not be too familiar with Mateer, given that he played in the Pac-12 last season, but he is a name to remember moving forward. He has plenty of excellent game tape to catch up on. - Conn, College Sports Wire
The connection and chemistry Mateer has with Arbuckle have a chance to be as impactful as the one Dillon Gabriel shared with Jeff Lebby, and the two put together a pair of productive seasons in Norman. But it isn't all on Mateer's shoulders either. The offensive line should be much improved, and the wide receiver depth is better as well. If Oklahoma can have better luck on the injury front, they'll be significantly improved and Mateer will have a chance to put up some big numbers in 2025.

Social media reacts to big-time commitment for MSU football on recruiting trail

Social media reacts to big-time commitment for MSU football on recruiting trail Michigan State football had a big-time addition to its 2026 class on Thursday, which resulted in a lot of praise from the fanbase and media. Four-star offensive lineman Collin Campbell committed to Michigan State on Thursday afternoon, becoming the No. 11 commit in the Spartans' 2026 class thus far. Campbell picked the Spartans over offers from 24 other programs, including the likes of Utah, Arkansas, BYU, Arizona, Cal, Kansas State, Nebraska, Minnesota, Duke, Purdue, Stanford, Washington, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and UCLA. Campbell is the highest-rated commit in the Spartans' class and ranks as the No. 33 offensive tackle in the 2026 class. This was simply a massive recruiting battle win for the Spartans, and one the fans were very much pumped about when the news broke. Ohio State Athletic Director Ross Bjork meets with media to discuss state of program

Ohio State Athletic Director Ross Bjork meets with media to discuss state of program College athletics continue to be transformed at breakneck speed. Over the last few years, we've seen conferences re-align, Name, Image and Likeness become prevalent and extremely meaningful, the transfer portal turn college athletics into free-agency, and now, we have direct revenue sharing taking center stage after the approval of the House Settlement. With all of that going on, and with the recent news that will again change things, Ohio State Athletic Director Director Ross Bjork took some time to meet with the media to give a state of college athletics, what it means for Ohio State, and provide some direction of the program given the size and impact of such a massive athletic department. He also took time to field some questions from the media that made their way to the banks of the Olentangy. It was a long and wide-ranging press conference, but we felt it necessary to provide the full video and audio of Bjork's time at the podium on Thursday to give you the full scale of all of his comments. Watch and listen to Bjork discuss things like the House Settlement, how revenue sharing will be funded, expanding the College Football Playoff, the status of night games, and much more. Thanks to WBNS 10TV, the CBS affiliate in Columbus for the video. This won't be the last time we hear from Bjork with the everchanging landscape of college athletics. Ohio State had a really good AD with Gene Smith prior to Bjork's arrival, and so far the newest AD seems to know what he's doing and is ready to also knock it out of the park. Notre Dame hires alum Jas Smith as Director of Operations for women's basketball

Notre Dame women's basketball has added a new member to the front-office family. Jas Smith is the new Director of Operations for the Fighting Irish. The 2016 Notre Dame graduate is returning after serving as the director of operations for LSU football since January of 2022. It's no shock that Smith was working for former Notre Dame football head coach Brian Kelly in Baton Rouge -- she served as his coordinator of on-campus recruiting at Notre Dame from 2018-2021. Advertisement Before that, she was an ambassador for Notre Dame football while an undergraduate student in South Bend. She has a degree in information technology management from Notre Dame. She also worked as an admissions counselor at Notre Dame from 2016-2017. She worked as a director for undergraduate admissions at Nova Southeastern University after leaving Notre Dame, and she had a stop at the Special Olympics in Miami, where she was a senior sports manager, in 2021 when she was between stints working for Kelly. She'll be working under new men's and women's basketball general manager Pat Garrity. The men's team is continuing to try to rebuild, while the women's team will be working to get over a disappointing Sweet 16 loss in last season's tournament. The women's team had been expected to compete for a championship. Welcome back to campus, Jas.
