‘Sorry for abandoning': Two-day-old baby left outside Navi Mumbai orphanage; parents traced by police

Time of India5 hours ago

NAVI MUMBAI: A day after a newborn was found abandoned on a street outside an orphanage in Panvel, the biological parents were traced on Sunday. The police identified the child's father as a 23-year-old Bhiwandi resident, Aman Kondkar, an engineer who is currently unemployed.
He told the police that he was in a relationship with a 20-year-old distant relative woman from Mumbra.
The two-day-old girl had been placed in a plastic basket which was left on a pavement outside an orphanage in Takka Colony early Saturday morning.
Even as family members of the couple were opposed to the marriage, the woman got pregnant and delivered the child at a private hospital in Mumbra. "At the private hospital where the baby was born, the couple had claimed they were married...,"
said assistant commissioner of police (crime) Ajay Landge.
The couple had arrived at the spot in a car. The vehicle registration number helped the police track them down. Footage from CCTV cameras in the locality helped the police zero in on the couple. "One of the recordings showed a burkha-clad woman carrying the basket and placing it on the pavement outside Swapnalay Girls' Orphanage," said the officer.
The infant was found in the basket, with a note that the person who had left the newborn felt "sorry for abandoning" the infant.

The couple had left the newborn at the spot early Saturday.
The infant is currently in the custody of a charitable organisation. The state child welfare committee will decide whether or not to hand over custody of the child to the parents.
The mother has claimed that she "repented her act and decided to bring back the baby the next day", said senior inspector of Panvel police station, Nitin Thakare. The police said they are still to ascertain if the couple were married.
The couple has been booked for abandoning a child. They have not been arrested, but served with a notice, directing them to participate in the investigation.
A psychiatrist from Masina Hospital, Dr Priyanka Mahajan, said that if a baby is born out of wedlock, there can be immense societal and psychological pressure on a young mother to "get rid" of the child due to the stigma attached to it.
Dr Mahajan pointed out that a mother does feel guilt and remorse due to the natural human bond between a mother and her baby.

'Saying I love you isn't sexual harassment': Bombay HC draws the line; clears man in Pocso case

This is a representational AI image (Pic credit: Lexica) NEW DELHI: Bombay high court's Nagpur bench, while quashing conviction of a man under POSCO case, said that saying 'I love you' is only an expression of feeling and does not in itself amount to "sexual intent. " A bench of justice Urmila Joshi-Phalke acquitted a 35-year-old man accused of molesting a teenage girl in 2015. While hearing the case, the bench in its order said that any sexual act includes inappropriate touching, forcible disrobing, indecent gestures or remarks made with the intention to insult the modesty of a woman. Earlier, a sessions court in Nagpur convicted the man under Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in 2017. The bench had also sentenced him to three years' imprisonment. The man was accused of accosting the 17-year-old girl while she was on her way home from school. The complaint mentioned that the man held her hands and said, "I love you." The teenager went home and told her father, and a FIR was lodged. The HC, while quashing the man's conviction, said that no circumstance indicated that his intention was to establish sexual contact with the girl. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More Undo "Words expressed 'I love you' would not by themselves amount to sexual intent as contemplated by the legislature," the court said. "There should be something more to suggest that the real intention behind saying 'I love you' was to drag the angle of sex," the HC added. The case doesn't fall under the purview of molestation or sexual harassment, it further noted. "If somebody says that he is in love with another person or expresses his feelings, that in itself would not amount to an intent showing some sort of sexual intention," the order said.

Bengaluru Stampede case: CAT quashes Bengaluru cop's suspension, slams govt over ‘mechanical' action

The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) on Tuesday quashed the June 5 order suspending former additional police commissioner (west), Bengaluru, Vikash Kumar Vikash, and suggested to the government to similarly revoke the suspension of former police commissioner B Dayananda and DCP (Central) Shekhar H Tekkannavar in what appeared to be a strong rebuke to the government's action. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had, on June 5, announced the suspension of police officers holding them responsible for the stampede that occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 which left 11 persons dead and scores of fans injured. A CAT bench consisting of Justice BK Shrivastava and member Santosh Mehra, while asking the government to reinstate Vikash Kumar immediately, noted that the order of suspensions of police officers had been done 'in a mechanical manner,' and it is 'not based upon the convincing materials. 'At the time of passing of the suspension order, the CAT order noted, there was no convincing material showing the 'default or negligence' of the police officers concerned. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo The KSCA submitted a letter which did not contain any request for permission to make the arrangements for the victory celebrations. The letter only gave information regarding the intention. 'Therefore, it was not expected from the police that upon the basis of a letter submitted before the station in-charge of one police station, the police will make all of the arrangements all of a sudden,' the order said. 'We also feel our duty to draw attention of the state government towards the settled principle of law that where a citizen aggrieved by an action of government department has approached the court and obtain a declaration of law in his/her favour, other similarly situated ought to be extended the benefit without the need for them to come to court,' the bench said referring to the suspension of Dayananda and Shekar Tekkannavar.
