Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins goes on 10-day IL with hamstring strain
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles placed outfielder Cedric Mullins on the 10-day injured list Friday with a right hamstring strain prior to their series-opener against the Chicago White Sox.
Mullins has played 50 games, including all nine innings of Wednesday's loss to St. Louis after missing the first two games of the series.
He is leading the struggling Orioles with 10 home runs, 31 RBIs and 19 extra-base hits. Baltimore (19-36) began Friday with baseball's third-worst record after consecutive playoff appearances in 2023 and 2024.
Mullins' IL stint comes as Baltimore anticipates the return of 2024 AL Rookie of the Year runner-up and outfielder Colton Cowser (thumb), who is on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk.
The Orioles signed utility player Cooper Hummel to a one-year major league contract in a corresponding move.
Baltimore could be one of only a few sellers at the MLB trade deadline, with Mullins as one of the most movable pieces.
The 30-year-old Mullins will hit free agency in 2026. He can play all three outfield positions and has exceeded 15 home runs and 50 RBIs in each of the last four seasons. He earned a 2021 All-Star appearance while homering 30 times, contributing 59 RBIs and batting .291 in 159 games.

The Spanish coach, or perhaps he should be called an architect or a visionary, orchestrated a 5-0 destruction of Inter Milan in Saturday's Champions League final. The match was so clinically one-sided that it resembled a training session against an amateur team, rather than a three-time European Cup winner. Passing, movement, energy. Tireless pressing, forwards dropping back to defend, wingers protecting fullbacks. Was this really PSG? Yes. All of these attributes were on display in Munich as Luis Enrique joined an elite list of coaches to win the Champions League with multiple clubs . His other success was with Barcelona in 2015 — a 3-1 win against Juventus — but Saturday was sweeter. 'This is the time for a great party and to make the most of this moment,' Luis Enrique said. 'I felt this connection with the players and the fans, I think it was a very strong connection throughout the season. ' Before Luis Enrique's arrival at the start of last season, such teamwork and unselfishness were not the hallmarks of PSG. Far from it. PSG had become increasingly complacent with star names like Neymar, Thiago Silva, Lionel Messi, Edinson Cavani, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Kylian Mbappé. All fine players, some even great, yet all came and went without winning Europe's biggest club prize. Consequentially, the impatience of the club's Qatari owners led to a merry-go-round of coaches. When Luis Enrique took charge he boldly went against what PSG's owners had done since taking charge 14 years ago. It was no longer about pandering to star power and, even more importantly, it wasn't about who the new coach signed but rather who he sold. Out went Neymar and midfielder Marco Verratti , who made too many headlines off the field amid regular reports about their lifestyle and a penchant for partying. Then, during the offseason, came the biggest jolt of all as Mbappé — the club's record scorer — joined Real Madrid. How would PSG cope in the French league, let alone the Champions League, without a player they had overly relied on for so long? Rather well it turns out, although it took time and courage. What were the turning points in PSG's season? On a rainy autumn night in London, Ousmane Dembélé was dropped by Luis Enrique and PSG lost to Arsenal 2-0 in a dismally poor performance. Luis Enrique made it clear he was looking for dedication in his squad and this was non-negotiable, which is why he dropped Dembélé. Critics lambasted his decision and doubts continued as PSG struggled in the new-look Champions League, losing to Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich. As baffling a decision it was to some, it nevertheless showed that Luis Enrique was not going to give in to player power, like so many of his predecessors. Instead of demanding a transfer or moaning, Dembélé said nothing. A few months later, he was transformed into a prolific scorer and is now a potential Ballon d'Or winner . The other turning point came on Jan. 22. PSG faced possible elimination from the Champions League group stage if it lost at home to Manchester City, the 2023 champion. The nightmare scenario saw PSG trailing 2-0, with no Mbappé to bail the team out. What happened next ultimately defined their season, as the club's young players took the initiative and turned an inevitable-looking defeat into a 4-2 win. Noticeably, PSG's redesigned attack clicked with four different scorers rather than relying too heavily on one. The young guns carried on as a resurgent PSG added to its domestic double with the Champions League title for a remarkable treble — which Luis Enrique first achieved with Barcelona 10 years ago. It was deeply symbolic that PSG's best player against Inter was 19-year-old Désiré Doué, who set up the first goal and then scored twice. Also, there were four different scorers on the night — just like against City. The last PSG goal was scored by Senny Mayulu, a 19-year-old talent who grew up in the northeastern Parisian suburb of Le Blanc-Mesnil. In memory of his daughter Luis Enrique's daughter, Xana, died six years ago at the age of nine. When he was asked about his daughter by broadcaster Canal Plus after the match, Luis Enrique pointed to his heart and said: 'It's here every day of my life, whether we win or lose.' Orioles rookie Coby Mayo gets his first big league RBI and then clears benches vs. White Sox
BALTIMORE (AP) — Coby Mayo cleared the bases — and the benches — with his first big league RBI. With a runner on second and two outs in the fourth inning of Baltimore's 4-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, the Orioles designated hitter singled to left field to drive in Ryan O'Hearn. Mayo, called up from the minors earlier in the day, rounded first after his first RBI in his 22nd major league game but got caught in a rundown. Second baseman Lenyn Sosa tossed to first baseman Miguel Vargas and Mayo collided with Sosa with both arms — to try to draw an interference call — and fell as he was heading to second. Vargas tagged Mayo out, but Sosa took exception to Mayo's shove. The two were talking when Mayo picked up his helmet from the ground and then pushed Sosa in the left shoulder as he was walking away. That sent players from both teams onto the field, where there was a little pushing and shoving before order was quickly restored without incident. 'Obviously, I was just trying to get to second base,' Mayo said after the game. 'I was trying to get into scoring position for Heston (Kjerstad) and (Chicago) cuts it off and I got into a rundown. I was being told in the minor leagues to try to stay in a rundown. 'I thought he was in the baseline and just tried to get some contact and didn't mean for it to escalate. I wasn't trying to do that. It just, it did.' Sosa said through an interpreter that he didn't like how Mayo handled things. 'I think he tried to make a dirty play and after that, I just went to him and tried to ask him, 'Why did you do that?'' Sosa told reporters. 'His reaction was to push me.' White Sox manager Will Venable downplayed the situation. 'I don't think it was that big a deal,' he said. 'Probably just Mayo trying to make a play and get an interference call and (I'm) sure Sosa just didn't appreciate getting run into intentionally. But yeah, not a big deal.' The 23-year-old Mayo, considered one of the Orioles' top prospects, entered with a career .094 batting average. He went 1 for 12 in four games earlier this season with Baltimore after going 4 for 41 in 17 games last season. Max Muncy hits 200th career HR, sparks Dodgers' offense with a pair of 3-run shots
Los Angeles Dodgers' third-baseman Max Muncy reached a career milestone, hitting his 200th home run in the fifth inning of Saturday's game. Muncy turned on a splitter that Mark Leiter Jr. threw inside, pulling it deep into right field and off the foul pole. It was a three-run shot that extended the Dodgers' lead over the New York Yankees to 14-1. It was also Muncy's second home run of the night as he hit another three-run dinger in the second inning.
