Alexander Isak's 'juicy' Man Utd offer and Pep Guardiola intervention to seal £51m deal
Alexander Isak and Newcastle United have reached a bitter stalemate as the star striker pushes for an exit. But the Swede's career could have panned out differently if he had left former employers Real Sociedad for another Premier League heavyweight three years ago.
The 25-year-old made his feelings known last month when he told the Magpies he wanted to leave, and after Liverpool saw a £110million bid rejected for him, neither party has budged. Eddie Howe's side remain adamant he is not for sale and will don a Newcastle shirt this season, while the player is said to be refusing to play for the club again.
Since arriving in 2022, Isak has taken the top-flight by storm, improving on his debut league goal tally of 10 with 21 two seasons ago and 23 last time out. It is no surprise that a club like the reigning champion Reds have turned his head, but he has held admirers in England since his days in Spain. Mirror Football takes a look at all those interested in Isak before his St. James' Park switch and why a deal never happened...
Manchester City's Erling Haaland preference
Having caught Borussia Dortmund's eye whilst playing in his native Sweden, Isak signed for the German side but left for Spain in 2019 after finding minutes hard to come by. With Sociedad, he became one of La Liga's most revered strikers, leaving many top sides vying for his signature. One of those interested parties was Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.
Speaking in 2024, years after Isak made his Newcastle switch, Guardiola admitted: "At Real Sociedad, we started to follow him, we were impressed. He was a target. With his skills, all the clubs around the world take a look. I think he adapted really, really well in the Premier League."
City's reason for not pursuing Isak more vigorously? Erling Haaland. The Athletic reported in the summer of 2022 that the Norwegian was Guardiola's priority No. 1, ahead of Isak, and Haaland's arrival even persuaded him to pen a new contract with the club.
The Spaniard got his way as Haaland's £51m Dortmund release clause was met that July, and he has become a two-time Premier League Golden Boot winner, scoring 85 league goals since 2022, to the 54 of Isak, who arrived in England a few months after him.
Manchester United's 'juicy' Alexander Isak offer
City were reportedly not the only club in Manchester to admire Isak, as rivals Manchester United were claimed to have submitted a 'juicy offer' to the Swede that summer.
Mundo Deportivo reported that before Isak completed his £63m move to Newcastle, the Red Devils, then led by Erik ten Hag, were in touch with his representatives, who persuaded the striker to decline their advances.
Sociedad never received a bid from United for Isak, and having lost out on his signature, Ten Hag began his first season in charge with Cristiano Ronaldo leading the line, though that infamously only lasted until November.
Arsenal's £75m 'overpriced' release clause regret
Arsenal were yet another club that had Isak on their radar before he signed for the Magpies, and they perhaps came the closest to securing his signature with an informal offer.
The Gunners sought to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang up front and saw Isak as the ideal recruit. However, when approaching him in January 2022, they encountered some discrepancies regarding the Swede's price tag.
Mikel Arteta's side tabled an informal £56m offer, which was far lower than Sociedad's estimations, as they were sticking to Isak's £74.7m release clause. The Athletic reported that this fee was just too much for Arsenal, who saw him as 'overpriced,' and Isak ended up at St. James' Park the following summer while continuing to be monitored by the Gunners.
A fee of £75m would now be considered a bargain for Isak, who, after Liverpool's £120m bid was rejected, is thought to be valued at a potential British record transfer sum of £150m by Newcastle.

Man Utd contact former star about transfer return after private 'tip-off'
Manchester United have contacted David de Gea about a sensational return to Old Trafford, according to reports. Ruben Amorim is not wholly convinced about his current goalkeeping options, with neither Andre Onana or Altay Bayindir inspiring confidence. The unconvincing performances of Onana and Bayindir has led the club to consider moves for Emiliano Martinez and Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer. United's priority has been on attacking reinforcements, however, and the club have spent almost £200m on Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. As a result Onana looks set to start for Manchester United in their Premier League opener against Arsenal on Sunday, although Amorim has refused to confirm the Cameroon international will be between the sticks. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. 'It's like the other players,' Amorim said when asked if Onana would start against Arsenal. 'Everyone has to win the place. 'So I'm not going to say if one player is number one. He's ready to go to the game. Let's wait. You will know Sunday.' Onana missed the entirety of United's pre-season tour through injury but has regained his fitness in time for United's opening Premier League fixture. While moves for Martinez or Donnarumma appear unlikely, Manchester United are still considering bringing in a new goalkeeper and have made 'discreet background calls' about a return for De Gea. According to The Sun, United have been 'tipped off' that their former No. 1 has a clause in his Fiorentina contract allowing him to leave for a 'relatively small sum'. De Gea spent the 2023-24 campaign as a free agent after being released by Manchester United but joined Serie A side Fiorentina this time last year. During his 12-year spell at Old Trafford, De Gea established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in Manchester United's history. The Spanish veteran made over 500 appearances for the Red Devils and won the club's Player of the Year award four times. De Gea made an emotional return to his former club last weekend in a pre-season friendly and later posted on social media that 'out paths may cross again'. 'A magical moment for me and my family to come back to Old Trafford – my home,' he said. 'From the bottom of my heart – I want to say thank you for the reception – for all the love you showed me. More Trending 'To the supporters that never stopped being with me throughout my time at this club. Our paths may cross again.' Speaking last season as Onana continued to struggle in the Manchester United goal, Old Trafford hero Paul Parker said it was a 'massive' mistake to let De Gea leave the club. 'Look at the goalkeeper, I think they made a massive mistake letting David de Gea go so quickly,' he said. 'They could have kept him there, built a team and then discussed bringing in a new goalkeeper. For me, it's more important for a goalkeeper to use his hands rather than his feet.' Man arrested after Bournemouth footballer reported racist abuse at match
AFC Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused by a spectator during the opening match against Liverpool. Match referee Anthony Taylor stopped play in the 29th minute on Friday and a man, 47, was ejected from Anfield stadium. A 47-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and has been taken into custody to be interviewed, Merseyside Police said. Semenyo scored twice in the second half to help bring Bournemouth back from two goals down at Anfield before Liverpool went on to eventually win the contest 4-2. Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo (left) and Liverpool's Milos Kerkez during the match (Peter Byrne/PA) The following day, the 25-year-old forward said on social media: 'Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever – not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together.' He thanked his teammates, Liverpool players and fans 'who showed their true character', and the Premier League officials 'who handled it professionally'. Semenyo continued: 'Scoring those two goals felt like speaking the only language that truly matters on the pitch. This is why I play – for moments like these, for my teammates, for everyone who believes in what this beautiful game can be. 'The overwhelming messages of support from across the football world remind me why I love this sport. We keep moving forward, together.' Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever – not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together. To my @afcbournemouth teammates who supported me in that moment, to the @LiverpoolFC players and fans who showed their true… — Antoine Semenyo (@semenyo924) August 16, 2025 During the match, Semenyo spoke to managers Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola before the two captains Virgil van Dijk and Adam Smith were called over to the dug-outs. An anti-discrimination message was read out to the Anfield crowd, and it is understood that police officers went into the referee's room at half-time. The incident came two days after Tottenham Hotspur player Mathys Tel received racist abuse online after missing a penalty in his side's Uefa Super Cup win against Paris Saint-Germain. Liverpool captain van Dijk labelled the reported abuse aimed at Semenyo as a 'disgrace'. He agreed it was symptomatic of a wider problem not restricted to football, but said greater attempts had to be made to change the mindset. Campaigns such as taking the knee and Kick It Out have not been able to eradicate the issue, he added. Van Dijk said: 'What else can we do? Because this is the very odd one (case) that has managed to say something that is obviously a disgrace. 'The only thing we can do is deal with it by dealing with him personally and try to educate the next generation. That is the only way to try and kick it out, in my opinion. 'I can't believe it. These things shouldn't happen but unfortunately it does and it is an absolute disgrace in my eyes. 'First and foremost these things should never happen in the world, not only football. I am happy to say I don't see it happening up until today actually. 'But in general racism is not of this world in my opinion, but if we are to be realistic, unfortunately, it still exists and that is the painful side of it. 'We have to deal with it in the here and now.' Semenyo celebrates scoring his side's second goal of the game (Peter Byrne/PA) Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton, match commander for the Liverpool versus Bournemouth game, said on Friday: 'Merseyside Police will not tolerate hate crime of any form.' 'We take incidents like this very seriously, and in cases like this we will be proactively seeking football banning orders, with the club, against those responsible.' He added: 'There is no place for racism and it is vital that anyone who witnesses such an offence reports it to stewards, or the police, immediately so we can take the necessary action like we did this evening. 'As with all matches, we work very closely with both Liverpool and Everton FC to ensure the safety of the public and the players.' A spokesperson for Liverpool Football Club said it is aware of the allegation of racist abuse and that 'we condemn racism and discrimination in all forms, it has no place in society, or football'. The Football Association said it was 'concerned' about the allegation of racism towards Semenyo and that it would ensure 'appropriate action' would be taken. West Yorkshire Police said a Luton Town supporter was arrested at the match against Bradford City at Valley Parade after an officer saw him making racist gestures at a home player shortly before half time. 'The 51-year-old man was removed from the ground and arrested on suspicion of behaving in a threatening, abusive or disorderly manner likely to cause harassment alarm or distress,' the force said.
