Man arrested after Bournemouth footballer reported racist abuse at match

AFC Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused by a spectator during the opening match against Liverpool.
Match referee Anthony Taylor stopped play in the 29th minute on Friday and a man, 47, was ejected from Anfield stadium.
A 47-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and has been taken into custody to be interviewed, Merseyside Police said.
Semenyo scored twice in the second half to help bring Bournemouth back from two goals down at Anfield before Liverpool went on to eventually win the contest 4-2.

The following day, the 25-year-old forward said on social media: 'Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever – not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together.'
He thanked his teammates, Liverpool players and fans 'who showed their true character', and the Premier League officials 'who handled it professionally'.
Semenyo continued: 'Scoring those two goals felt like speaking the only language that truly matters on the pitch. This is why I play – for moments like these, for my teammates, for everyone who believes in what this beautiful game can be.
'The overwhelming messages of support from across the football world remind me why I love this sport. We keep moving forward, together.'

During the match, Semenyo spoke to managers Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola before the two captains Virgil van Dijk and Adam Smith were called over to the dug-outs.
An anti-discrimination message was read out to the Anfield crowd, and it is understood that police officers went into the referee's room at half-time.
The incident came two days after Tottenham Hotspur player Mathys Tel received racist abuse online after missing a penalty in his side's Uefa Super Cup win against Paris Saint-Germain.
Liverpool captain van Dijk labelled the reported abuse aimed at Semenyo as a 'disgrace'.
He agreed it was symptomatic of a wider problem not restricted to football, but said greater attempts had to be made to change the mindset.
Campaigns such as taking the knee and Kick It Out have not been able to eradicate the issue, he added.
Van Dijk said: 'What else can we do? Because this is the very odd one (case) that has managed to say something that is obviously a disgrace.
'The only thing we can do is deal with it by dealing with him personally and try to educate the next generation. That is the only way to try and kick it out, in my opinion.
'I can't believe it. These things shouldn't happen but unfortunately it does and it is an absolute disgrace in my eyes.
'First and foremost these things should never happen in the world, not only football. I am happy to say I don't see it happening up until today actually.
'But in general racism is not of this world in my opinion, but if we are to be realistic, unfortunately, it still exists and that is the painful side of it.
'We have to deal with it in the here and now.'

Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton, match commander for the Liverpool versus Bournemouth game, said on Friday: 'Merseyside Police will not tolerate hate crime of any form.'
'We take incidents like this very seriously, and in cases like this we will be proactively seeking football banning orders, with the club, against those responsible.'
He added: 'There is no place for racism and it is vital that anyone who witnesses such an offence reports it to stewards, or the police, immediately so we can take the necessary action like we did this evening.
'As with all matches, we work very closely with both Liverpool and Everton FC to ensure the safety of the public and the players.'
A spokesperson for Liverpool Football Club said it is aware of the allegation of racist abuse and that 'we condemn racism and discrimination in all forms, it has no place in society, or football'.
The Football Association said it was 'concerned' about the allegation of racism towards Semenyo and that it would ensure 'appropriate action' would be taken.
West Yorkshire Police said a Luton Town supporter was arrested at the match against Bradford City at Valley Parade after an officer saw him making racist gestures at a home player shortly before half time.
'The 51-year-old man was removed from the ground and arrested on suspicion of behaving in a threatening, abusive or disorderly manner likely to cause harassment alarm or distress,' the force said.

Dorset Police 'do not endorse' Bournemouth volunteer patrol group

A police and crime commissioner (PCC) has said a group of volunteers patrolling Bournemouth at night is not endorsed by the Force describes itself as a voluntary community service set up to keep streets safe and "protect the most vulnerable".But Dorset PCC David Sidwick told the BBC: "I have had no contact with them. I have concerns about vetting, I have concerns about training, I have concerns about their administration."The group said it remained "committed to collaboration" with police and was working to resolve the issues. The decision not to endorse the group follows a multi-agency meeting on Chief Constable Mark Callaghan, of Dorset Police, said: "We have engaged with the group extensively and a review of their vetting processes has highlighted areas of significant concern. "The organisers have been unable to provide reassurance that this group has sufficient safeguards in place to ensure volunteers are adequately vetted, trained, and equipped to undertake high-visibility patrols in the community."He said there were "insufficient details in relation to the use of body-worn cameras, publishing of photographs of members of the public, administration and recording of any force used or first aid provided, and limited evidence of any training provided".He added: "We welcome the responsible use of volunteers, who wish to carry out public service and there are many ways in which this can be facilitated in a safe way, including becoming a Special Constable, joining the street pastor programme, or via established Watch schemes." Safeguard Force claimed it was asked to attend the meeting "at very short notice, with no agenda provided".It said the concerns raised were "primarily related to wording in documentation" and it was taking "immediate action" to resolve them."We remain committed to collaboration and are fully prepared for our next meeting as requested," it force said it had been carrying out its own high-visibility patrols in Bournemouth, with 289 foot patrols taking place in the past seven days, including the town centre, gardens and seafront, leading to arrests, dispersal notices, stop searches and anti-social behaviour incidents tackled. Alejandro Garnacho issued with new snub as Man Utd negotiate Chelsea transfer

Manchester United kicked off their Premier League season with a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday, a game where Alejandro Garnacho was unsurprisingly absent, with his United career all but over Wantaway Manchester United misfit Alejandro Garnacho will not play for Argentina in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers at the start of September. ‌ Garnacho is set to leave United before the transfer window closes, if the Red Devils and Chelsea can come to an agreement over a transfer fee. The Blues are pushing hard to take the young winger to Stamford Bridge, with United ready to cash in if the money is right. It's understood Garnacho has already agreed terms with Chelsea. ‌ The 21-year-old has been training on his own at Carrington for a month and has been frozen out of the squad completely by Ruben Amorim, with his comments and subsequent social media antics following the Europa League Final the last straw for the United head coach. Garnacho had initially fallen foul of Amorim when he was dropped for the Manchester derby last December, before being reintegrated back into the squad - unlike Marcus Rashford, who was loaned to Aston Villa in January. ‌ Unsurprisingly, Garnacho was not involved in United's Premier League opener against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday. Now he has been left out of the Argentina squad for the World Cup qualifying fixtures with Venezuela and Ecuador next month. Garnacho, who made his international debut as a teenager in 2023, was a consistent selection by boss Lionel Scaloni in 2024, but has been left on the outside looking in during 2025. During United's pre-season tour of the United States, Amorim was asked whether it was a shame it hadn't worked out with Garnacho and himself. He said: "I think Garnacho you can understand and you can see, he's talented, he's a really talented boy. And sometimes things don't work out. "You cannot explain specifically what it is. But I have the feeling, I think it's clear that Garnacho wants a different thing with a different leadership. And I can understand that. "So I think it's not a problem. Sometimes you adapt to one guy, you have the connection. Other times, you want a new challenge. So, we try to make everything okay to all the parts. To the club, to the coach and to the players. So, it's a natural thing in football." There are five Premier League based players in the Argentina squad: Emi Martinez (Aston Villa), Cristian Romero ( Tottenham), Julio Soler ( Bournemouth), Alexis Mac Allister ( Liverpool) and Claudio Echeverri ( Manchester City).
