Olympic golden girl Tatjana Smith reflects on her year since retirement

It's been a year since Olympic gold medallist Tatjana Smith retired from competitive swimming. The 28-year-old renowned backstroke queen announced her retirement last year after winning two medals at the Paris Olympics 2024. She won a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke and a gold medal in the 100m backstroke. Reflecting on the year since her last strokes, Smith shared how her journey shaped who she is. 'One year ago today, I swam the last race of my career,' she said in an Instagram post. 'It still feels surreal. A journey that began with a dream ended up exceeding every expectation I ever had. Swimming gave me more than medals or records — it shaped who I am. It taught me discipline, resilience, humility, and the power of showing up, again and again.' Smith dedicated her last race to her family for their support. 'That final race wasn't just mine; it belonged to my family, who sacrificed more than most will ever know. Standing on the deck that day, I wasn't just closing a chapter. I was celebrating them and the rest of my team, their belief in me, and all the moments we lived through together. I even got to celebrate my competitors — witnessing them reach their dreams, knowing the work and heart behind every moment of success.' Smith started swimming at a young age, and she is now the most decorated athlete in South Africa, with a total of four Olympic medals, including two golds. 'Swimming gave me a stage — but more importantly, it gave me a purpose, a second family, and moments I'll carry with me for the rest of my life. The chapter has closed, but the gratitude never will.'

Betway Premiership opening weekend: Every fixture and kick-off time

The wait is almost over for the start of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season, the 30th PSL season since the advent of the professional era in 1996/97. A full round of eight fixtures will be contested between Saturday, 9 August and Sunday, 10 August. There are six matches scheduled for Saturday and a further two on Sunday. As a reminder, Mamelodi Sundowns head into the season as defending champions and are searching for a record-extending ninth-consecutive title. Few would bet against them doing so! New teams to look out for are Durban City and Orbit College who were promoted to the top-flight. There will of course be no Royal AM this season nor Cape Town City FC who were relegated. Also, SuperSport United were sold and bought by Calvin Lee John, the son of Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, for a reported R50 million. The team will now be known as Siwelele FC. Hunt confirms failed bid for former Orlando Pirates striker

Durban City head coach Gavin Hunt has confirmed that he did approach former Orlando Pirates striker Zakhele Lepasa for his services. The 28-year-old Bafana Bafana forward worked under the 60-year-old coach during a six-month loan at SuperSport United, where he rediscovered his form. Lepasa was recalled by Pirates and also represented Bafana Bafana, where he helped them qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Unfortunately, injuries halted his progress, and he missed out on the tournament, which took place in early 2024. Last season, he failed to make a single appearance for the Buccaneers due to an injury, and ultimately, he was offloaded by the club. Hunt, who joined Durban City last month, said the former Orlando Pirates star did not accept his offer. The lanky striker has been linked to several teams in recent weeks including Kaizer Chiefs. 'Yeah, it's someone we approached, but obviously… I think he has other ideas, the boy… so we haven't heard from him, so we [probably] have to move on, it's one of those things,' the former SuperSport United mentor told iDiski Times . Since leaving Pirates, Lepasa has been training with Bafana Bafana ahead of the CHAN tournament. South Africa plays Algeria in their opening match at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala.
