Galaxy's modest home winning streak comes to an end

Myrto Uzuni scored a goal in the 40th minute and added an assist, Owen Wolff scored his first goal of the season and Austin FC beat the Galaxy 2-1 on Wednesday night to snap the Galaxy's three-game home win streak.
Brad Stuver had three saves and his ninth shutout — second in MLS behind Vancouver's Yohei Takaoka (10) — this season for Austin (8-8-6).
Diego Rubio, on the counter-attack, played a ball-ahead to Uzuni, who cut back to evade a defender at the edge of the box and then blasted a shot inside the left post to open the scoring.
Uzuni misplayed a cross that was deflected but then beat three Galaxy players, including goalkeeper Novak Micovic, to the loose ball near the right post and tapped it to Wolff for the finish from the center of the area that made it 2-0 in the 63rd.
The Galaxy (3-14-6), the defending MLS Cup champion which had won back-to-back games for the first time this season, had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped.
Joseph Paintsil converted from the penalty spot in the third minute of stoppage time for the Galaxy. Micovic stopped two shots.
The Galaxy had 57% possession and outshot Austin 15-7.
Austin beat the Galaxy 1-0 on April 19.

Galaxy disciplines fans for rule violations while protesting team response to ICE raids

The Galaxy have banned a fan from the Angel City Brigade support group following the July 4 match at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson. The team has also restricted access for other fans accused of harassing the MLS team's management. Bruce Martin, a 12-year Angel City Brigade member, was banned indefinitely for using a press credential to bring a banner into the stadium not authorized by the team, according to a letter sent to Martin informing him that he cannot attend any Galaxy games in Carson or any other events at Dignity Health Sports Park. Fans from the same group have been suspended indefinitely for harassing members of Galaxy management, according to a person with knowledge of the decision not authorized to discuss it publicly. During the home game against Vancouver, fans of the Angel City Brigade, founded in 2007, walked in with several banners protesting immigration raids in Southern California since June 6. Some of the protest banners blamed AEG, the owner of the Galaxy, for remaining quiet while fans were harmed by raids. Other groups, such as Galaxians, LA Riot Squad and Galaxy Outlawz, joined them by keeping quiet during the match. 'We have not issued a statement. We recognize the impact that recent events and actions have had on our community," Galaxy spokesperson Jamie Álvarez said. "For decades, we have honored the rich backgrounds, cultures, and experiences of our fans and staff. Our purpose as a professional sports organization is to unite and support our community around a shared love of this sport. We are focusing on prioritizing the safety, well-being, and sense of belonging for our staff and for our fans.' The Dodgers, another team with a large Latino fan base, were also criticized for not saying anything at the beginning of the raids and ultimately pledged to make a $1 million donation to families affected by the raids. Martin, who last season released a book titled 'This is Where My Heart Lies: Through the Eyes of a Supporter,' chronicling his passion as a Galaxy fan, revealed the letter on social media in which he is vetoed. Martin said he was heartbroken by the decision, but fans have supported him and his cause. 'A large percentage of the [Angel City Brigade] has canceled their season tickets,' Martin said. "There are a lot of fans around MLS who have reached out to me. It's one of my favorite things about the soccer community — how close we are." The support from Angel City Brigade, Galaxians, LA Riot Squad, Galaxy Outlawz and other fan groups play a major role in making the Galaxy's home field at Dignity Health Sports Park a fortress, a stadium where the team did not lose all of last regular season and where it won its sixth MLS title. "As I've said before, the fans have a right to take whatever stances they want and our job is to go out and try to win games. Top Performances Joel Klatt Has Called: Tavon Austin Surprises vs. Oklahoma

The college football offseason is not only a great time to look ahead, but it's also a great time to do some reflection. In the latest episode of my podcast, I did a little reflection thanks to a mailbag question. A fan named Roy L asked me which player had the best performance in a game that I've called. Honestly, that's such a difficult question to answer. I can't pick just one because there have been so many incredible performances. So, I'm going to share my top five individual performances I've ever called instead. Throughout this week, I'll go one by one through my top five, in descending order. We're now down to my No. 1 pick. Before sharing which performance tops the list, I have a pair of honorable mentions that I want to give shout-outs to. Kyler Murray in the 2018 Red River Showdown was phenomenal. Texas won that game, but the former Oklahoma quarterback had a run down the sideline in that game that's still probably the singular best play I've ever seen. The other honorable mention I had was Ohio State quarterback JT Barrett's comeback performance against Penn State in 2017. If you remember, Saquon Barkley took the opening kickoff for a touchdown, but Barrett was incredible in that game. I just couldn't find a spot for him on that list. Here's the full list to this point: 5. Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr. & EDGE JT Tuimoloau at Penn State (2022) 4. Michigan EDGE Aidan Hutchinson vs. Ohio State (2021) 3. Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield vs. Oklahoma State (2017) 2. Colorado WR/CB Travis Hunter vs. TCU (2023) No. 1 might come as a surprise to some, but it was truly an incredible performance. 1. West Virginia WR Tavon Austin vs. Oklahoma (2012) I had to go into the way-back machine for my No. 1 pick. I feel like not many people remember this game, but I remember it like it was yesterday. Austin wasn't West Virginia's running back. He was one of the Mountaineers' leading receivers in 2012 and in the two seasons prior to that. But because of injuries at running back, West Virginia threw a bit of a curveball. Austin lined up at tailback from the jump. I thought, "Well, this is really strange." We weren't told that this was happening in any of the pre-production meetings, so we were caught by surprise. To add some more context, this was a night game in Morgantown, as West Virginia was hosting Bob Stoops' Oklahoma squad at the height of his run with the Sooners, who had won three of the last five Big 12 titles at that time. Oklahoma looked poised to win another conference title that year as well, entering that game at 7-2. But there was Austin, playing running back and threatening to upset Oklahoma. He had 21 carries for 344 yards (16.4 yards per carry) and two touchdowns. He also had four receptions for 82 receiving yards in that game, giving him 426 yards of total offense on 25 total touches. He essentially gave the Mountaineers 17 yards every time he got the ball. It was really a remarkable performance. I felt like I was coming out of my skin every single time Austin touched the ball. It was incredible. Unfortunately, his efforts that day didn't result in a victory. Oklahoma won 50-49 after putting up 554 yards and six touchdowns on offense. The last of those six touchdowns was the game-winner with 24 seconds remaining. Austin's performance was a highlight in a largely forgettable 7-6 season for West Virginia, but I'll certainly remember this game for years to come.
