Explained: CBDT targets unaccounted income invested in crypto

The Central Board of Direct Taxes ( CBDT ) is investigating tax evasion and the laundering of undeclared money by high-risk individuals who have invested in cryptocurrency or virtual digital assets ( VDAs ). Why is the tax body doing this? The main reason is to curb tax evasion and the laundering of unaccounted funds. Sources told PTI that the CBDT has identified some "high-risk persons" who are putting money in VDAs but have not complied with the Income Tax Act. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: 1 simple trick to get all TV channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo Data reviewed by the I-T department showed violations such as not filing the mandatory Schedule VDA in their income tax returns (ITRs), paying tax at lower rates, or wrongly claiming cost indexation. Under this, the CBDT is reaching out to thousands of individuals, asking them to review their returns or update them if their transactions are not properly declared. 'Thought it was an earthquake': Eyewitnesses recount horrific Ahmedabad plane crash; say sky was filled with black smoke

NEW DELHI: Mohan Bahadur Kshatriya, an eyewitness to the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, recounted scenes of devastation and chaos on Saturday as he joined rescue efforts just minutes after the aircraft went down on Thursday. Living just 500 meters from the crash site, Kshatriya said he initially mistook the deafening explosion for an earthquake. 'I heard a loud bang and thought it was a storm or an earthquake,' he said. 'When I stepped out, there was smoke and fire everywhere. People were shouting that a plane had crashed. We ran toward the mess where students were screaming for help.' He worked alongside Army personnel to rescue five severely injured students from the wreckage. He added, 'They were in extremely serious condition. Then we searched further and found a body in terrible shape, trapped under the debris,' he added. Another eyewitness, Rekha Kshatriya, described the moment the aircraft hit as unlike anything they had ever experienced before, even in a neighborhood accustomed to loud noise. 'I have been staying here for the last 13-14 years, that day, around 1:30 p.m., we heard a loud noise. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Although we are accustomed to hearing loud noises, this time the noise felt like our eardrums would burst. It seemed like an earthquake. We had just sat down to have lunch, and the furniture in our house had started shaking violently. For a second, it felt like a bomb blast happened. Then, when we went outside, we saw that a plane had crashed. We saw broken pieces of aircraft everywhere. It was difficult to understand whether it was a plane crash, a terrorist attack, or something else. The whole sky was filled with black smoke. High flames were rising everywhere." As questions arises about how the tragedy occurred, the civil aviation ministry has constituted a high-level multi-disciplinary committee to investigate the causes of the crash. "A High Level Multi-disciplinary Committee is constituted for examining the causes leading to the crash of the Air India Flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick Airport (London) on June 12, 2025. The Committee will examine the existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidelines issued to prevent and handle such occurrences and suggest comprehensive guidelines for dealing with such instances in the future," the ministry said in an official statement. It clarified that the new panel will not replace other formal inquiries but will focus on formulating improved protocols to prevent similar disasters in the future. The aircraft involved, Air India AI-171, was en route from Ahmedabad to London's Gatwick Airport when it crashed on June 12. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Relatives of those who died in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday are battling immense shock and disbelief as they gather at BJ Medical College to provide their DNA samples for identification. The tragedy has left many stranded in a state of deep sorrow and chaos — a feeling captured in Falguni's painful appeal. 'Can the compensation ever bring back my father? My mother is sick, and she needs my father. I need his love and affection. I will pay Rs 2 crore to them if they can bring back my father, who always preferred travelling Air India,' Falguni said, while waiting to give her blood sample. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo Her words reflect the raw emotions of countless families who have rushed to the hospital in the hope of identifying their loved ones' remains. Civil Hospital officials explained that the process is underway. Live Events 'Most of the relatives have provided samples. We also got a few foreign nationals. The DNA analysis of the human remains is also being carried out. Once the match takes place, identification will start. Then, the bodies will be handed over to the relatives,' said an official. Multiple teams have been deployed to handle the extensive procedure. 'The procedure is likely to take 48 to 72 hours. The initial identification process may start by Saturday,' the official added. For Gujarat's forensic experts, this is the greatest challenge they have faced in recent years. In the past, their teams successfully identified victims of a game zone fire in Rajkot, and now a similar effort is underway in Ahmedabad to bring closure to the affected families. (With ToI inputs)
