Hey there, Connectors! The weekend is almost upon us and I hope you make the most of it, whatever that means to you :).
I really enjoy watching The Chase, a quiz show that's been running in the U.K. for quite a few years. It's a fun format, and I like to play along (obviously, I'd do soooo much better than most of those who appear on it).
One contestant who appeared on an episode this week was a retired cop. When asked why he joined the force, he said that he'd encountered police as a young anarchist. His wife bet him £50 that he couldn't become a cop. He felt he had to prove her wrong. The contestant said he ended up quite enjoying the job in the end. Still, that seems like a very small sum (in addition to a police force salary, I suppose) to sell one's beliefs for.
Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It's a fun hangout spot, and you're more than welcome to hang out with us.

Today's NYT Connections hints and answers for Friday, July 18 are coming right up.
How To Play Connections
Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT's website or Games app.
You're presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part.
There's only one solution for each puzzle, and you'll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them.
Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay.
Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you're incorrect, you'll lose a life. If you're close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you're one word away from getting it right, but you'll still need to figure out which one to swap.
If you make four mistakes, it's game over. Let's make sure that doesn't happen with the help of some hints, and, if you're really struggling, today's Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it's easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

The See Spot Run reference on the top line was cute. I enjoyed that. But not for long, because we've got some serious business to take care of.
Swapping NOTE for RUN on the top line and grouping those words together got me the greens. Easy enough! Seeing STREAK and RUN next to each other made the yellows clear enough after that.
It took me a little while to figure out where to go next, but GUITAR kept drawing my eye. EEL seemed a little out of place and after a few moments of thinking, I had that dopamine rush of an "aha!" moment. They're both electric things! So are BLANKET and SLIDE (a type of dance).
That left me with the blues. I had no idea about those at all, though in hindsight I knew BRIDGE and COW were yoga poses. So I was fine with getting those by default.
I'm pleased to get yet another win on the board and with a perfect game too. That brings my win streak up to 143 wins. Here's my grid for today:

Two St. Paul police officers injured in crash, department says
Two St. Paul police officers were injured in a car crash while responding to a call Tuesday evening. The crash happened at approximately 6:40 p.m. near the intersection of Westminster and Maryland Avenue, according to the St. Paul Police Department. Officers were driving with their lights and sirens on at the time. When they turned, police say a woman driving a Chevy Malibu struck the squad car. The two officers in the squad car were transported to Regions Hospital for minor injuries. The woman driving the Chevy was cleared by medics for her injuries, which were minor. Police say there is no further information available.

Black Sabbath bandmates mourn Ozzy Osbourne's death at 76: 'There won't ever be another like him'
Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward paid tribute to the late "Iron Man" vocalist on social media. Black Sabbath musicians are mourning the death of founding vocalist Ozzy Osbourne. The surviving members of the pioneering heavy metal band posted social media tributes to the "Iron Man" singer, who died on Tuesday at age 76 — just 17 days after their reunion performance in Birmingham, England, during their farewell concert. Tony Iommi, who served as the band's lead guitarist, shared his surprise at the news of the singer's death. "I just can't believe it! My dear dear friend Ozzy has passed away only weeks after our show at Villa Park," the musician wrote in the caption of a post containing several photos of the singer and himself. "It's just such heartbreaking news that I can't really find the words, there won't ever be another like him. Geezer, Bill and myself have lost our brother." Iommi continued, "My thoughts go out to Sharon and all the Osbourne family. Rest in peace Oz." Geezer Butler, the group's original bassist, also wrote a message wishing Osbourne farewell. "Goodbye dear friend- thanks for all those years- we had some great fun," he wrote in the caption of a photo of Osbourne on stage. "4 kids from Aston- who'd have thought, eh? So glad we got to do it one last time, back in Aston. Love you." Bill Ward, who played drums in the band's original lineup, also posted a poetic tribute to the late singer. "Where will I find you now? In the memories, our unspoken embraces, our missed phone calls, no, you're forever in my heart," he wrote in the caption of a photo of himself next to Osbourne. "Deepest condolences to Sharon and all family members. RIP Sincere regrets to all the fans. Never goodbye. Thank you forever." In the late 1960s, Osbourne and Butler first collaborated in the band Rare Breed, and they later joined Iommi and Ward, who had previously played together in Mythology, to form Polka Tulk Blues. They eventually renamed the band Earth, and changed it once more to Black Sabbath. The band's earliest albums are considered some of the earliest (and best) examples of heavy metal as the genre evolved out of blues and rock traditions in the late '60s and early '70s. Sabbath maintained their original lineup (save for a few months when Dave Walker filled in on lead vocals) until 1979, when Osbourne was expelled from the band after the tumultuous recording of their eighth studio album, Never Say Die! The original quartet briefly reunited for a performance at Live Aid in 1985, and all shared the stage at Osbourne's first farewell concert in 1992. (The singer ultimately stayed retired for less than three years, and returned to live performances with the aptly titled Retirement Sucks Tour in 1995). The band reunited again during 1997's Ozzfest tour (without Ward, who then joined the lineup at two Birmingham shows at the end of the year that were recorded and released as the Reunion album). The four founding members headlined Ozzfest twice more in 2004 and 2005, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. After several years pursuing other projects separately, they embarked on a reunion tour in 2012 and released the album 13 in 2013, with Rage Against the Machine's Brad Wilk filling in on drums. The Ward-less trio later embarked on a final tour, appropriately called The End Tour, in 2016 with Tommy Clufetos on this month, the original Sabbath lineup reunited one last time at Back to the Beginning, the band's farewell concert in Villa Park, Birmingham. After performances by groups like Alice in Chains, Slayer, Guns N' Roses, and Metallica, Osbourne played five songs from his solo career, followed by performances of "War Pigs," "N.I.B.," "Iron Man," and "Paranoid" with the original Black Sabbath lineup. "I just want to say to you on behalf of the guys in Black Sabbath and myself, your support over the years has made it all possible for us to live the lifestyle that we do," Osbourne said just before the final song.
