Gurugram digital arrest scam: Court rejects bail plea of key accused, points to bank chairman role
In the order rejecting bail on July 21, Judicial Magistrate Arun Dabla found the allegations in the case to be 'grave and serious' and stated that the accused, Samudrala Venkateswarlu, committed a 'socio economic offence which has deep rooted impact on the society'.
The scam, which targeted a top advertising executive, was at the heart of a series of investigative reports published by The Indian Express last month on how digital scamsters moved crores in minutes across banks and state borders using and reusing 'mule' accounts.
In the Gurugram case — just one of the 1.23 lakh such crimes that were reported in 2024 involving Rs 1,935 crore — this newspaper reported that scamsters routed the Rs 5.8 crore from the victim's HDFC Bank account through three layers: an ICICI Bank account of a college student in Haryana's Jhajjar; 25 other accounts in 10 banks across the country; and, onward to 141 more accounts.
The second layer of 25 accounts included at least 11 in Sreenivasa Padmavathi Co-operative Urban Bank of Hyderabad where Samudrala was a director. At the time, The Indian Express spoke to the bank chairman P Srinivas Kumar who blamed officials at ICICI Bank for not raising the alarm. On Friday, Kumar told The Indian Express that he was 'unaware' of the latest court order and Samudrala's allegations. 'If someone approaches me officially, I will see what is to be done,' Kumar, who is also a lawyer, said.
The court's order also mirrors the other findings of this newspaper: a bulk of the stolen money (Rs 4.87 crore) was 'transferred' to accounts in the Hyderabad bank; the account-holders included Royya Sharadha (a tailor) and N Ravinder (a carpenter) who told police that Samudrala allegedly made them sign blank cheque books and withdrawal forms on the pretext of getting them jobs.
Samudrala was arrested on April 29 by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Gurugram police, which is probing the case. During interrogation, Samudrala allegedly told police that he had been lodged in the Sabarmati Jail from September 2024 to January this year and then till February in the Rajkot Central Jail in similar cases.
In its latest order, the Gurugram court said, 'The court must be proactive in such cases where the accused dupe innocent and poor people and mercilessly take away all their hard earned money and deprived them of their life time savings… if such accused are dealt with leniency and they are granted bail in a casual manner then it would certainly send a wrong message in the society…' It noted that Rs 18.5 lakh has so far been recovered.
The Indian Express had also reported that the SIT was alerted by the Union Home Ministry's cyber fraud unit, Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), that the 11 accounts in Hyderabad are also allegedly at the heart of 181 other such complaints. According to one complaint, Rs 21 crore had allegedly passed through these accounts in just three months.
The order rejecting Samudrala's bail stated: 'Investigation is still pending and the other co-accused are yet to be arrested…'

Woman raped, forced to convert; 5 held
Bijnor: Five people were arrested for allegedly raping and forcibly trying to convert a 27-year-old woman in Bijnor district, police said on Sunday. The woman also alleged that "the accused were planning to sell her kidney for Rs 50 lakh. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " In her police complaint, the survivor said she worked at a shop in an area under Nangalsoti police station. Her husband abandoned her about a year ago as he did not like her working till late in the evening, and this led to frequent quarrels between them. Taking advantage of her vulnerable situation, the shop owner offered to arrange accommodation for her at his own expense, and later exploited her sexually. Between Feb and March this year, he and his associates allegedly put pressure on her to embrace Islam. In her police complaint, the survivor said that on Feb 25, the shop owner, accompanied by his wife, brother-in-law and a few others, arrived at her residence and administered some kind of intoxicants and forcibly tried to convert her. The survivor said the main accused also took her to various hospitals in Rishikesh and Delhi, where he contacted some agents and planned to sell her kidney for Rs 50 lakh. When she resisted, she and her five-year-old son was held hostage at a house from Feb through March. She somehow managed to escape from the house in April and remained silent, as the perpetrators threatened to kill her son. On Saturday, the woman gathered the courage to approach police, following which an FIR was filed. Bijnor SP (city) Sanjeev Vajpayee said, "We have registered a case against nine people under BNS sections 64 (rape), 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), 109(1) (abetment), 115(2) (kidnapping/attempt to murder), 253 (harbouring offender), and 3(5) (related to grievous offences), as well as sections 3(1) and 5(1) of Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act." RInfra, Rpower say Enforcement Directorate concludes searches
The company continues to operate in the normal course and the said action has no impact on its business operations, said two separate statements issued by both RInfra as well as RPower. 'The action by ED has concluded at all locations. The company and all its officials have fully cooperated and will continue to cooperate with the authority,' RPower said in its latest stock exchange filing. New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) Reliance Group firms Reliance Infrastructure (RInfra) and Reliance Power (RPower) on Sunday said the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has concluded searches at their premises and the companies will continue to cooperate with the federal probe agency. On Saturday, the ED carried out searches against the companies of Reliance Group chairman Anil Ambani in Mumbai for the third day and recovered a number of documents and computer peripherals from multiple locations, according to official sources. The raids were launched on July 24 by the federal probe agency as part of an alleged Rs 3,000-crore bank loan fraud-linked money laundering case apart from multiple other allegations of financial irregularities with crores of rupees by certain companies. 'The action by the ED has had no impact on the business operations, financial performance, shareholders, employees, or any other stakeholders,' the two companies said in their stock exchange filings. Anil D. Ambani is not on the boards of RInfra and RPower. Accordingly, any action taken against RCOM or RHFL has no bearing or impact on the governance, management, or operations of RInfra and RPower, the two companies said. According to ED sources, the investigation primarily pertains to allegations of illegal loan diversion of around Rs 3,000 crore, given by the Yes Bank to the group companies of Ambani between 2017 and 2019. The Union government had informed the Parliament recently that the State Bank of India has classified RCOM along with Ambani as 'fraud' and was also in the process of lodging a complaint with the CBI. A bank loan 'fraud' of more than Rs 1,050 crore between RCOM and Canara Bank is also under the scanner of the ED apart from some 'undisclosed' foreign bank accounts and assets, the ED sources said. Reliance Mutual fund is also stated to have invested Rs 2,850 crore in AT-1 bonds and a 'quid pro quo' is suspected here by the agency. Additional Tier 1 (AT-1) are perpetual bonds issued by banks to increase their capital base and they are riskier than traditional bonds having higher interest rates. An alleged loan fund diversion of about Rs 10,000 crore involving Reliance Infrastructure too is under the scanner of the agency. PTI ABI HVA This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. Chhattisgarh: 4 Maoists killed in Bijapur encounter; security forces recover arms and ammunition
In a significant counter-insurgency operation success, four reward-carrying Maoists were killed during a prolonged encounter with security forces in the dense forest region of Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh, the police said on Sunday. The operation, launched by the District Reserve Guard (DRG) on July 26, was based on specific intelligence inputs regarding Maoist activity near the Basaguda and Gangaloor police station limits in the district's south-western corridor. The gunfight began in the evening and continued intermittently through the night. Among the deceased were two women cadres, all affiliated with the South Sub Zonal Bureau of the banned CPI (Maoist), said the official. The slain insurgents were identified as Hunga (ACM, Platoon 10), Lakkhe (ACM, Platoon 30), Bhime (ACM), and Nihal alias Rahul, a party member and bodyguard to the Bureau Communication Head. Collectively, they carried a bounty of Rs 17 lakh. Security personnel recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunition from the site, including one SLR rifle, one INSAS rifle, one .303 rifle, a 12 bore gun, a BGL launcher, a single-shot 315 bore rifle, and an AK-47. In addition, multiple magazines, live rounds, grenades, BGL cells, Maoist literature, and daily-use items were seized. Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P. confirmed that the operation was part of an intensified anti-LWE campaign in the region. He noted that 425 hardcore Maoists have been neutralised between January 2024 and July 2025, attributing the success to strategic planning, operational courage, and community support. Despite challenging monsoon conditions -- marked by rugged terrain, dense foliage, and persistent rainfall -- security forces maintained high morale and operational readiness. The encounter underscores the state's continued efforts to dismantle Maoist strongholds and restore civil order in insurgency-hit zones. The operation remains on-going, with forces maintaining heightened alert across the Bastar division, which has historically been a hotbed of left-wing extremism.
