That is a steep price to pay for a relief pitcher, although Bednar is under team control for next season. The St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Twins also carry some of the more coveted relievers this season, and they could capitalize on the Pirates' high price and the Guardians' unfortunate situation. The Cardinals hold Ryan Helsley, who is set to be a free agent this season, and is coming off a season where he led MLB in saves and won the National League Reliever of the Year Award. Helsley could have a higher markup for a deal, now that the Pirates have revealed their asking price. The Twins have been hesitant to deal Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax, but with the market thinning and the perceived value of players holding less value, it could sway the Twins into making a move. This season, it was not a team's acquisition that shook up the market ahead of the deadline but rather MLB's investigation into sports betting. Suárez reportedly has a high asking price from the Arizona Diamondbacks, so Kwan's price has to be through the roof. This means contenders would have to significantly overpay to land Kwan who would become the best outfielder on the market as well as one of the best overall hitters. However, Rosenthal added the team won't move him if the offers don't match their evaluation. "While the Guardians' chances of signing Kwan to an extension might be slim, this will not be their last opportunity to trade him," he wrote. "They can try again this offseason, when they possibly could involve even more teams, as well as the next two deadlines and — if there is no lockout — the 2026-27 offseason." The Guardians are certainly under no pressure to move on from Kwan. However, a contender willing to meet their asking price would receive a major boost to help their chances of winning the World Series this fall.
