Aam Aadmi Party
(AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (
BJP
) and Congress during a party membership drive in Ahmedabad, questioning the relationship between the two parties.
He alleged that the two major national parties are secretly working in tandem calling them "premi-premika."
"What is the relationship between Congress and the BJP? Is it a brother-sister relationship or a husband-wife relationship? It is a lovers' relationship. They meet secretly due to the fear of society. Society does not accept their marriage," ANI quoted him as saying.

He accused both parties of being complicit in corruption and blamed their alleged collusion for decades of misgovernance.
He further added, "Stay away from them, they are very dangerous. Their rule lasted for 30 years because Congress was in their pocket. 70 per cent of contracts go to this party, 20 per cent of contracts go to that party. Both parties have opened their own companies. These people don't go to jail... Congress works for the BJP. Only Aam Aadmi Party serves the country."

He positioned AAP as the genuine alternative in Indian politics, saying that the only AAP "serves the country."
On Tuesday, while speaking to the media, Kejriwal hailed the party's victory in Gujarat's
Visavadar by-election
, saying it reflects the mood of Gujarat for a change.
Kejriwal said, "In the Visavadar by-election, the overwhelming majority with which Aam Aadmi Party secured victory and defeated BJP shows the mood of Gujarat, that people are fed up with BJP, they are angry, and want change. Gujarat wants a change," Kejriwal said.
The AAP Chief said that the victory was a response to the people's desire for an alternative to the BJP, which has ruled Gujarat for 30 years.
"BJP ruled here for 30 years because there was no alternative; Congress was sitting in BJP's lap... Now people have found a good, honest, patriotic alternative. They have decided to bring the Aam Aadmi Party to power," Kejriwal claimed.
On June 24, after winning the Visavadar Assembly bye-election by 17,554 votes, AAP leader Gopal Italia credited victory to public support, called it a historic result against the BJP's efforts, and highlighted growing faith in AAP leadership in Gujarat.
The Visavadar seat fell vacant after BhayBhupendrabhai Gandubhai resigned. Visavadar assembly constituency is part of Junagadh district and a segment of Junagadh Lok Sabha constituency.
The party had fielded Gopal Italia, a former Gujarat party chief, as its candidate for the Visavadar Assembly bypolls. The AAP party workers celebrated the election results in Gujarat, as Gopal Italia defeated BJP's Kirit Patel by 17,554 votes, garnering 75,942 votes in total.

BEST credit society fraud probe: EOW begins inquiry into ₹12.41-crore Lonavala property deal; Sena (UBT)-MNS calls it political vendetta

MUMBAI: With less than a week to go before the keenly watched BEST Employees' Credit Society elections, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police has launched a preliminary enquiry against eight senior office-bearers of the society over alleged irregularities in the purchase of a Lonavala property. The inquiry adds to a parallel probe by the state cooperation department, fuelling political tensions between the newly allied Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on one side and the BJP-led Mahayuti on the other. BEST credit society fraud probe: EOW begins inquiry into ₹ 12.41-crore Lonavala property deal; Sena (UBT)-MNS calls it political vendetta The credit society — controlled by the Sena (UBT)'s BEST Kamgar Sena and now in alliance with the MNS for the August 18 polls — is accused of paying ₹18.04 crore for a rest house in Lonavala, well above the ready reckoner rate of ₹5.63 crore, allegedly causing a loss of ₹12.41 crore to members. The complainant, BEST employee and society member Rajendra Gore, alleges the purchase violated cooperative rules, including acquiring property outside the society's jurisdiction without the registrar's permission. The EOW inquiry names chairman Kirtan Kori, secretary Umesh Sarang, directors Bhiwaji Sawant, Raju Sasane, Bhaskar Toraskar, Pramod Rane, former chairman Sanjay Bhagare, and CEO Lalit Parab — all affiliated with the Sena (UBT). Police officials confirmed that those named are being summoned for questioning. This latest action follows a notice dated August 13 from the divisional joint registrar of cooperative societies, appointing an inquiry team to examine the society's 2024-25 records. Separately, the EOW is also investigating a complaint by Vivekanand Ghag alleging ₹24 crore in irregularities. Sena (UBT) and MNS leaders have dismissed the charges as a political ploy. 'Since the Thackeray brothers joined hands for the BEST credit society polls, the whole state is watching. Suddenly, there are allegations. Earlier there were no complaints,' said Kori, who previously headed the Utkarsh Panel. BEST Kamgar Sena president Suhas Samant accused BJP MLC Prasad Lad of instigating the probes to create 'confusion among voters', noting that the society recently earned an 'A' grade in a government audit. Lad, however, defended the inquiries, saying, 'If there are complaints of irregularities, how can we keep quiet?' He insisted that both the cooperation department and the EOW are acting on specific complaints and evidence. The political stakes are unusually high for what is typically a low-profile cooperative poll. The Sena (UBT) will contest 18 of the 21 seats, the MNS two, and the BEST SC/ST Employees Welfare Association one. If victorious, the MNS will also get a nominated director post. The Mahayuti's BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena are contesting as the opposition. The elections mark the first time the Thackeray cousins' parties are contesting together in any poll, seen by both camps as a test run for a broader civic election alliance — and by rivals as a potential threat worth disrupting.

Self-reliance in critical tech crucial for Viksit Bharat, says PM Modi

Clean energy to semiconductors, defence to medicines, space to deep sea, information technology to nuclear energy — Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the importance of self-reliance in critical technologies and scientific research and development in India achieving the objective of becoming a developed nation by 2047. Addressing the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort, the PM highlighted the technology initiatives that are underway, like in clean energy and space, and emphasised the need to develop capabilities in areas like semiconductors and fighter jets. '…slavery made us impoverished, and it also rendered us dependent. Our reliance upon others kept increasing. The bedrock of a Viksit Bharat is also a self-reliant Bharat. The greater a nation's reliance on others, the more its freedom comes into question,' Modi said, while making his point about technological self-reliance. He said a made-in-India chip would be available in the market by the end of the year. Modi spoke about the progress being made in harnessing renewable energy sources like solar and wind, the efforts to mine and develop critical minerals, and stressed on the importance of nuclear energy. 'By 2047, when the nation will complete 100 years of Independence — the year we have set as target for achieving the goal of a 'Viksit Bharat' — we are moving forward with the resolve to increase our nuclear energy capacity more than tenfold,' he said. The Prime Minister also mentioned India's Deep Ocean Mission aimed at exploring resources under the sea. His remarks came just a day after it was revealed that two Indian divers, 'aquanauts', recently completed trips up to the depth of about 5,000 metres in the Atlantic Ocean. This is in preparation for the country's 'Samudrayaan Mission' in which three Indian divers are supposed to travel in an India-made vessel to about 6,000 metres below the ocean surface. Modi also spoke about astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's recent journey to the International Space Station, and India's own Gaganyaan mission which is supposed to send humans into space by 2027. 'And I am very proud of the reforms done in space recently, more than 300 startups of my country are now working only in the space sector and thousands of youth are working with full potential in those 300 startups,' he said. He asked the youth to put in similar energy into other complex technological areas to strengthen the nation as well as generate jobs and revenues. 'My appeal is to the young scientists of my country, to my talented youth, to my engineers and professionals, and also to every government department. Should the jet engine for our Made in India fighter jets be ours or not? We are considered the pharma of the world … Isn't it the need of the hour that we put more energy into research and development, we should have our own patents… The Government of India has formulated the BioE3 policy. I request the youth of the country to come and study the BioE3 policy and take steps,' he said.

MHA warns states of foreigners obtaining Indian identity & docus

Thiruvananthapuram: A ministry of home affairs (MHA) communication to the states, including Kerala and Union Territories (accessed by TOI), has warned that foreigners are fraudulently obtaining Indian identity and beneficiary documents — from voter ID and Aadhaar to passports and ration cards — to claim benefits meant exclusively for citizens. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Such access, the document says, "leads to illegal, criminal and anti-national activities by such foreigners using fake IDs." It also flags that these forged documents have been used to tap into govt welfare schemes, diverting resources from their intended beneficiaries. On the basis of this MHA alarm, the state convened a high-level meeting of stakeholders to initiate the measures outlined in the directive. The note cites the Citizenship Act, 1955, which defines an "illegal migrant" as a foreigner who enters India without a valid passport or other travel documents, or one who enters with valid papers but stays beyond the permitted period. Against this legal backdrop, the MHA called for an intensified nationwide drive to identify such individuals, capture their biometrics and demographic particulars, and deport them "without any delay. " The MHA ordered that the district police module (DPM) and foreigners identification portal (FIP) be mandatorily used to record fingerprints, photographs and personal details of all detected illegal migrants — whether they are overstaying foreigners or those who entered without documents. The DPM, rolled out in 2023, allows district police to instantly access visa records, immigration data, arrival and departure details, and stay information along with the capability to capture biometrics on the spot. The FIP, initially created in 2018 for Rohingya and Bangladeshi nationals, was upgraded in 2023 to cover all illegal migrants and now serves as a central repository accessible to police, immigration officials, border guarding forces and the ministry of external affairs. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now To close loopholes, the MHA has directed states to install live fingerprint scanners, computers and web cameras at police stations in identified hotspots, holding centres and border outposts, replacing earlier reliance on the national automated fingerprint identification system. "For capturing biometrics of such detected illegal migrants, live scanners on FIP portal may be used," the document said. These records will be fed into a central server shared with agencies like UIDAI, passport offices, election commissions and ration card authorities to prevent fraudulent claims. The directive makes cross-verification mandatory before issuing any Indian document or extending social benefits, and also orders a review of past beneficiaries. If a match is found in the illegal migrants' database, the document or benefit is to be "de-activated/cancelled forthwith" and details shared with other agencies for similar action. States have been told to appoint a nodal police officer of at least DSP rank in every district for FIP operations and to ensure that all relevant personnel are trained within three months. The Bureau of Immigration will oversee the system nationally, integrate it with other govt databases and ensure smooth migration of data between platforms.
