IKEA opening new, smaller-footprint stores in 6 cities this year: What's inside

(NEXSTAR) — For those who love wandering through dozens of model rooms, furniture with Swedish names, and assembly instructions known to cause ire online, there is no better place than IKEA.
But with only a few dozen stores in the U.S., experiencing the joys of using their small pencils, dining on Swedish meatballs, and leaving with an iconic blue IKEA tote bag might be just out of reach for you.
That may soon change, though.
IKEA expects to open five more locations before the end of the year, and at least one store in 2026, a spokesperson confirmed to Nexstar.
Already this year, the company has opened locations in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and Beaverton, Oregon.
Unlike the massive warehouse IKEA stores you may be familiar with, these stores are much smaller. For comparison, the IKEA in Portland, Oregon, is roughly 280,000 square feet with 1,200 parking spots outside, while the new Beaverton location fits into a shopping strip with just a few stalls for parking.
Known as Plan & Order points with Pick-up, these IKEA locations' smaller footprints 'make it easier for the IKEA customer to shop with us more frequently, or in some cases, for the first time ever,' a spokesperson explained.
'While customers will not find the entire IKEA product range on-site, the small store format offers the most relevant range of products and provides digital access to everything that IKEA offers,' they added.
There are IKEA experts available to help customers 'plan and order home furnishing solutions,' though you would not be able to take home your new furniture that same day. Instead, you'll be able to schedule delivery or order pick-up at the same location. The IKEA locations also serve as pick-up points for online orders.
Another Plan & Order store opened in Hunt Valley, Maryland, outside of Baltimore, earlier this month. More are scheduled to open within the next year, an IKEA spokesperson has confirmed. Those locations will be in Manteca, California, and Henderson, Nevada.
As of July 2025, IKEA has 17 Plan & Order locations across 10 states, though the location in Alpharetta, Georgia, is set to close at the end of August.
IKEA opened an additional store earlier this month in San Marcos, Texas, describing it as a 'small store.' Measuring under 35,000 square feet, the San Marcos store showcases ''local living' solutions thoughtfully tailored to reflect the unique everyday needs of the San Marcos community,' IKEA explained. Despite its small size, more than 2,500 products are on display with 2,000 items available for purchase, including 'a small range of Swedish Food Market items.'
Other small IKEA stores are scheduled to open in Syracuse, New York, and Dallas and Rockwall, Texas, later this year. Another is on track to open in Phoenix next year.
In total, three of IKEA's more than 50 stores are considered 'small stores.' In addition to San Marcos, those stores are found in Arcadia and San Francisco, California.
Unlike Buc-ee's, IKEA isn't stepping into any new states with these store openings. Including retail spaces and pick-up locations for furniture and large orders, IKEA can be found in more than 30 states.

AstraZeneca reports profit jump in second quarter, confirms outlook

Profit and revenue for British-Swedish drug major AstraZeneca were up in the second quarter, the company reported on Tuesday, confirming its fiscal 2025 outlook. Profit before tax climbed 30% to $3.13 billion in the second quarter, up from last year's $2.40 billion, the Cambridge-based firm said. Earnings per share came in at $1.57, up from $1.24 in the same period last year. Core earnings per share stood at $2.17 for the period. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) climbed 22% to $4.90 billion from last year's $4.03 billion. AstraZeneca said total revenue for the quarter increased 12% to $14.46 billion from last year's $12.94 billion. Revenue, meanwhile, grew 11% at constant exchange rates. Analysts on average expected the company to record revenues of $14.10 billion for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items. Looking ahead, AstraZeneca continues to expect core earnings per share to increase by a low double-digit percentage in the 2025 financial year, and total revenue to increase by a high single-digit percentage.

Top Chinese, US trade officials huddle in Sweden for second day of thorny talks over tariffs

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Chinese and U.S. trade officials were heading into a second day of meetings in the Swedish capital Tuesday to try to break a logjam over tariffs that have skewed the pivotal commercial ties between the world's two largest economies. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng made no public comments to reporters after the first day of talks that lasted nearly five hours behind closed doors at the Swedish prime minister's office Monday. Before the talks resumed Tuesday, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson met with Bessent and U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer over breakfast. The United States has struck deals over tariffs with some of its key trading partners — including Britain, Japan and the European Union — since President Donald Trump announced 'Liberation Day' tariffs against dozens of countries in April. China remains perhaps the biggest unresolved case. 'The Chinese have been very pragmatic," Greer said in comments posted on social media by his office late Monday. 'Obviously we've had a lot of tensions over the years. We have tensions now, but the fact that we are regularly meeting with them to address these issues gives us a good footing for these negotiations.' 'Whether there will be a deal or not, I can't say,' Greer added in the clip posted on X from MSNBC's 'Morning Joe'. "Whether there's room for an extension, I can't say at this point. But the conversations are constructive and they're going in the right direction.' Many analysts expect that the Stockholm talks, at a minimum, will result in an extension of current tariff levels that are far lower than the triple-digit percentage rates as the U.S.-China tariff tiff crescendoed in April, sending world markets into a temporary tailspin. The two sides backed off the brink during bilateral talks in Geneva in May and agreed to a 90-day pause — which is set to end on Aug. 12 — of those sky-high levels. They currently stand at U.S. tariffs of 30% on Chinese goods, and China's 10% tariff on U.S. products. Other issues on the agenda include access of American businesses to the Chinese market; Chinese investment in the U.S.; components of fentanyl made in China that reach U.S. consumers; Chinese purchases of Russian and Iranian oil; and American steps to limit exports of Western technology, like chips that help power artificial intelligence systems. Wendy Cutler, a former U.S. trade negotiator and now vice president at the Asia Society Policy Institute, said that Trump's team would face challenges from 'a large and confident partner that is more than willing to retaliate against U.S. interests.' Rollover of tariff rates 'should be the easy part,' she said, warning that Beijing has learned lessons since the first Trump administration and 'will not buy into a one-sided deal this time around.'
