Norwich Castle reopening date pushed back again
Part of a medieval castle is expected to reopen to the public in the summer, following a major regeneration beset by delays and soaring costs.Construction work on Norwich Castle's keep began in the summer of 2020, but was hit by setbacks including the pandemic and difficulties obtaining steel due to the war in Ukraine.The project, called Royal Palace Reborn, was initially expected to cost £20m but has since risen to £27.5m.Norfolk County Council said it would announce a full reopening date once the 900-year-old building had been handed over by contractors.
Margaret Dewsbury, a Conservative councillor and cabinet member for communities, said the project was reaching an "exciting final few months"."It's been an incredible journey so far, and we are thrilled to be moving on to the next stage when we can start to recreate the rich atmosphere of a Norman royal palace - with all the decorative elements that Henry I would have enjoyed when he visited Norwich Castle in 1121," she said."We look forward to welcoming our first visitors into the recreated Norman rooms in the spring, with the full opening to the general public in the summer."In March 2022, the project's contractor, Morgan Sindall, told the BBC work on the castle's keep would be completed by the end of 2023.However, the discovery of hidden Norman and Victorian features, plus the need to replace a leaking roof, meant the project was delayed further.
The revamp includes restoring the original floor levels in the keep, and recreating the great hall and the apartments of Norman kings.A new gallery of Medieval life is also being created, in partnership with the British Museum, which will see more than 900 objects go on display.The project was partly funded by a £13m grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.Last year, to cover rising costs, the council provided funds of £4.7m, on top of previous increases to the budget.
Later this spring, the council will offer a limited number of special previews of the keep "to key supporters", including members of the public and museum passholders, through a ticket ballot.The council said the previews would help shape the visitor experience, in preparation for the grand reopening.

Penrith firefighters rescue 'on-the-run' sheep from roof
A sheep and three lambs were rescued from the roof of a house after they escaped from a field and tried to avoid being caught by Fire Station manager Darren Wright said he and his crew were "baffled" when they arrived at the two-storey property in Graham Street, just before 11:00 BST, and were greeted by the sight of the animals up the assistance of a local farmer, ladders and reaching poles, they managed to bring them down to safety and return them to a Wright said the escaped family had climbed on to a section of roof at the back of the house, which was 2ft (0.6m) off the ground, "to get away from police" who had been called to help round them up. "We are called to a lot of animal rescues, but sheep on a roof was a first," he told BBC Radio Cumbria."We couldn't fathom out why there would be sheep in that area in the first place and how they even got on the roof - there was a lot of confusion."He explained that police officers were at the scene and told them they were "trying to capture them after they'd escaped from a field". "It all became apparent when we realised the roof at the rear of the property went down near the ground and the sheep had used it to get away from the police," he said. Mr Wright, of Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, said although "it was a shock" to see the animals, they were glad there had been "a happy outcome".Additional reporting by Sian Hall. "We are very sorry for this inconvenience. If your general waste or recycling bin is not collected as scheduled, please leave it presented as we will make every effort to return for it. "If we have not returned by the Sunday, please take your bin back in and present it again on your next scheduled collection day. "Remaining restraints will be removed by our staff if possible. "But if they cannot be removed, we will not be able to collect the bin." "Please note that we may not be able to guarantee the return of any restraints removed by our staff. This beloved Hackney venue is at risk of closure
The Bath House in Hackney Wick could be forced to close following a Hackney Council decision to end its lease. Sat inside the restored Victorian baths at 80 Eastway, the multi-use, not-for-profit space is a regular host of one of Time Out's top nights out in London, Giant Steps. But it's a lot more than that. The Bath House is home to a cafe, bar and multiple events spaces and studios where people go for things like community-led life drawing classes, ice bath sessions, craft workshops and live music of almost every kind. It describes itself as 'a local institution, fuelled by care and collectivism'. Now, the Bath House has launched a petition calling on local leaders to intervene in the council's plan. It says that it was made without due process. It's an incredibly special places is so central to so many of our community'.
