Pakistan to chair Taliban Sanctions Committee of UNSC
Pakistan will chair the Taliban Sanctions Committee of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in 2025 and serve as vice-chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the 15-nation U.N. body. According to a list of chairs of the subsidiary bodies of the UNSC, Denmark will chair the 1267 ISIL and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee of the UNSC, while Russia and Sierra Leone will be vice-chairs for 2025. Algeria will chair the 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee, while France, Pakistan and Russia will be vice-chairs. Pakistan will chair the 1988 Taliban Sanctions Committee that imposes an assets freeze, a travel ban and an arms embargo on individuals, groups, undertakings and entities associated with the Taliban in constituting a threat to the peace, stability and security of Afghanistan. Guyana and Russia will be vice-chairs of the Taliban Sanctions Committee. Pakistan will also be co-chair of the Informal Working Groups on Documentation and Other Procedural Questions and on the General UNSC Sanctions Issues. Pakistan is a non-permanent member of the 15-nation Security Council for the 2025-26 term. The sanctions committees of the Council comprise all 15 members of the Security Council and make its decisions by consensus. India was chair of the UNSC Counter-terrorism Committee for 2022 during its 2021-22 tenure in the Council as a non-permanent member. India has consistently reminded the international community that Pakistan is host to the world's largest number of U.N.-proscribed terrorists and entities. Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was hiding in Pakistan's Abbottabad for years and was killed in an operation by the U.S. Navy Seals in May 2011. China, France, Russia, the U.K. and the U.S. are the five permanent members of the UNSC while Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia and Somalia are currently in the Council as non-permanent members. In elections held on Tuesday (June 3, 2025), five new non-permanent members of the UNSC were chosen by secret ballot for a 2-year term starting on January 1, 2026, until December 31, 2027. These are Bahrain, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Latvia and Colombia.

IATA has no concerns with India's aviation safety and infrastructure readiness
New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): Nick Careen, IATA's Senior Vice President, Operations, Safety and Security, on Tuesday highlighted that the Indian aviation market has not faced any concerns in terms of operational safety and infrastructure readiness. While speaking to ANI, the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) vice president said, 'Specific to this market, we don't have any real have not seen any major problems or any major concerns... With PM Modi's presence at the appropriate level and when the right people are involved, you get good outcomes.' Careen commented about an incident involving IndiGo flight 6E 2142, saying, 'The learning from that (incident) would involve better coordination. I am sure that's something that would be under consideration. I am 100% confident about it' IndiGo flight 6E 2142, flying from Delhi to Srinagar on May 21, was struck by a severe hailstorm that caused visible damage to the aircraft's nose. The aircraft had sought entry into Pakistani airspace to circumvent the weather, but this was denied by Pakistani authorities. The IATA VP also commented on the decision of India and Pakistan to close their airspace for carriers flying out from these countries, saying that airspace should not become a tool in disputes. 'We believe airspace should not be used as a tool in disputes and should remain neutral. Unfortunately, that's not always been the the meantime, airlines find a way around, but it does have an impact. It could increase the cost and time. Primarily, we hope that airspace will be managed accordingly and open for everybody to use safely and efficiently,' he said. Earlier on Monday, while addressing the IATA's 81st Annual General Meeting, PM Modi had outlined three foundational pillars driving India's aviation sector: first, a vast market--not merely a collection of consumers but a reflection of India's aspirational society. Second, a strong demographic and talent pool--where young innovators are pioneering breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, robotics, and clean energy. Third, an open and supportive policy ecosystem--enabling industrial growth. PM Modi emphasised that with these strengths, India is poised to elevate its aviation sector to unprecedented heights. DMK launches ‘Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' enrolment drive with eye on 2026 assembly polls
MADURAI: Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin on Sunday announced a special cadre enrolment drive titled 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu', setting a two-month target for party functionaries to enrol new members. A special resolution to this effect was adopted at the DMK's 7th General Council meeting held in Uthangudi. While moving the resolution, Stalin said each booth committee member must enrol at least 30% of the voters within their booth limits. District secretaries and other functionaries must ensure the target is achieved within two months, he emphasised. Stating that at least one person in every household benefits from a welfare scheme under the Dravidian model government which follows the principle of 'everything for everyone' Stalin urged all families in Tamil Nadu to unite under one umbrella in the run-up to the 2026 Assembly election. The aim, he said, is to take forward the DMK's efforts to protect state rights, language, and dignity. He also added that he would personally interact with party functionaries to review the progress of the enrolment drive.
