Patriots eyeing two positions as the top priority in free agency
The New England Patriots reportedly have a clearly defined approach as they enter free agency and the 2025 NFL draft.
They want to make the offensive and defensive lines the top priority, but they'll also be emphasizing the cornerback, wide receiver and linebacker positions, according to Boston Herald's Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed.
It's no secret that dominating in the trenches is the recipe to building a championship team, and the Philadephia Eagles once again proved it to be a fact by upsetting the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl LIX. The Patriots will be looking to improve in the same areas coming off a year where both the offensive and defensive lines struggled.
Callahan and Kyed wrote:
"Overall, the Patriots are taking a trenches-first approach to free agency, with cornerback, wide receiver and linebacker close behind. Their plan is to come heavy on Day 1 by extending their best offers to their top targets, ideally a left tackle, receiver, defensive lineman and defensive playmakers in the back seven. Unlike past offseasons, the Patriots won't hesitate to sign a player if a recent draft pick plays the same position."
The Patriots are expected to be one of the most aggressive teams in free agency. ESPN's Mike Reiss even predicted the approach to 2025 free agency will be similar to the aggressive approach the team had in the 2021 offseason.
New England has the most money to spend in free agency, and they're running out of excuses to make the sort of moves necessary to get the team back on track.

Former Notre Dame lineman Howard Cross III making waves for the Cincinnati Bengals in camp

It wasn't a surprise when new Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Al Golden pushed the team to pick up one of his former Notre Dame players in defensive tackle Howard Cross III. Golden knows exactly what the defender brings to the table, and while he went undrafted, the Bengals quickly made a move to sign him. Cross wasn't guaranteed a spot on the roster due to this fact, but he has been playing very well and might be pushing Cincinnati to keep him around. Their head coach Zac Taylor recently spoke to the media about Cross, and gave a glowing review. He said that his undrafted rookie defensive tackle 'has shown the ability to do the things we're asking those guys to do. Do the dirty work and do it how we want it done.' It's pretty safe to say that Golden knew that Cross could be productive at this level, and them getting a chance to reunite should be great for both of their careers. NFL analyst Brian Baldinger wowed by Texans rookie OT Aireontae Ersery's debut vs. Vikings

How impressive was Houston Texans rookie offensive tackle Aireontae Ersery's debut? One NFL analyst can't stop gushing over his performance against the Minnesota Vikings. NFL Network's Brian Baldinger recently broke down Ersery's drive against the Vikings in pass protection during his famous "Baldy Breakdown" videos on Tuesday morning. It didn't take long for the longtime offensive line analyst to point out how mature, steady and set Ersery was in his breaks, pad level and latch-on capability to win nearly every one-on-one battle during pass protection sets. "He's got tremendous length. He knows how to use his arms, too. Like, just keep running right around the arc," Baldinger said while watching a rep against former first-round pick Dallas Turner. "Let Davis Mills make the throw." On another snap, Ersery made a veteran move by allowing the pass-rusher to work inside, thus giving him the edge to win his one-on-one and create an even larger running lane for the tailback to pick up a first down. Pro Football Focus also came away impressed with Ersery's pass-blocking skills. His 77.7 pass-blocking rating was the highest among all players on either line. The Minnesota product also didn't allow a single pressure to Mills. "He only played 10 snaps, but I thought he played well in those 10 snaps," Baldinger said. "He looked comfortable playing left tackle." The plan right now is for Ersery to start at right tackle this season while veteran Cam Robinson handles the left side as Laremy Tunsil's immediate replacement. That's only for one season. Long-term Ersery should shift over to the left side and become a staple blindside protector for C.J. Stroud. Perhaps the future has arrived early? Like say, Week 1 in Los Angeles?
