Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur signs new multi-year contract
Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has even been linked with the job since he was ousted earlier this month.

However, in a statement released ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix – the concluding round before the summer break – Ferrari said in a statement: 'Scuderia Ferrari HP is pleased to announce that it has extended, with a multiple-year contract, its agreement with Fred Vasseur, who will continue as team principal for the coming Formula One seasons.
'Fred joined the Scuderia at the beginning of 2023, bringing with him extensive motorsport experience and a proven ability to develop talent and build competitive teams across all levels of racing. Since then, he has laid a solid foundation with the ambition of returning Ferrari to the top of Formula One.
'Renewing Fred's contract reflects Ferrari's determination to build on the foundations laid so far. His ability to lead under pressure, embrace innovation, and pursue performance aligns fully with Ferrari's values and long-term ambitions.
'Under Fred's leadership, Scuderia Ferrari HP is united, focused, and committed to continuous improvement. The trust placed in him reflects the team's confidence in its strategic direction and reinforces a shared determination to deliver the results that Ferrari's fans, drivers, and team members expect and deserve.'
Since his transfer from Mercedes, Hamilton has not landed a grand prix podium in Ferrari colours – a streak of 13 races – the deepest into the season he has ever gone without a top-three finish.
He is sixth in the standings, 157 points off the championship pace and 30 points behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. Ferrari are second in the constructors' standings.
Hamilton said at last week's round in Belgium that he had staged meetings with all of Ferrari's key figures – including chairman John Elkann, CEO Benedetto Vigna and Vasseur – and submitted two documents outlining his vision as to why the Italian giants are not up to speed. Ferrari's last world drivers' title came in 2007, with their most recent constructors' crown the following year.
'Today we want to recognise what has been built and commit to what still needs to be achieved,' said Vigna. 'It reflects our trust in Fred's leadership — a trust rooted in shared ambition, mutual expectations and clear responsibility.
'We move forward with determination and focus, united in our pursuit of the level of performance Ferrari has to aim for.'
Frenchman Vassuer continued: 'I'm grateful for the trust Ferrari continues to place in me. This renewal is not just a confirmation — it's a challenge to keep progressing, to stay focused, and to deliver.
'Over the past 30 months, we've laid strong foundations, and now we must build on them with consistency and determination. We know what's expected, and we're all fully committed to meeting those expectations and taking the next step forward together.'

Charles Leclerc edges out McLarens to claim pole position in Hungary
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc took a surprise pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix – as team-mate Lewis Hamilton could manage only 12th. Championship leader Oscar Piastri and title rival Lando Norris had been expected to fight for pole but the McLaren men were left to settle for second and third respectively. Leclerc saw off Piastri by just 0.026 seconds with Norris only 0.015 sec behind the Australian. George Russell finished fourth for Mercedes. But Leclerc pulled a mighty lap out of the bag to secure both his and Ferrari's first pole of the season. The Monegasque said: 'Today, I don't understand anything in Formula One. Honestly, the whole qualifying was extremely difficult. When I say extremely difficult, it's not exaggerating. 'It was difficult for us to get to Q2, it was difficult for us to get to Q3. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are both desperate to win Formula 1 titles with Ferrari and executive chairman John Elkann has explained how he thinks they can get the job done Ferrari chief John Elkann wants to channel the spirit of the team's peak success 20 years ago in order to summit the Formula 1 World again. The Scuderia is the most successful outfit in the sport's history but has not won a title since 2008. It was a decade in which the Prancing Horse was largely dominant, particularly in the first half. Between 2000 and 2004, Michael Schumacher was the king of the grid as all the parts came together to team that had struggled at times in the 1990s into one which blew all its rivals away. The team was led at the time by Jean Todt, who played a huge role in bringing all those key cogs together. That included not only Schumacher behind the wheel but also the likes of Ross Brawn, who followed the German from Benetton to become Ferrari's technical director, and Rory Byrne who was lured out of his retirement in Thailand to become chief designer. There are plenty of factors behind Ferrari's struggles in recent years, but their progress has so often been stunted by politics and meddling individuals within the wider company. But now, executive chairman Elkann is preaching an approach of togetherness in the team's quest for more glory. Ferrari have built their operations around Charles Leclerc, added a seven-time F1 champion into the mix in the form of Lewis Hamilton, and have now tied down team principal Frederic Vasseur to a new multi-year contract amid speculation in Italy over the Frenchman's future. It has been a tough season so far with Hamilton in particular struggling to adapt, but Elkann hopes they, along with other key individuals, will form the perfect combination needed to get Ferrari back to the top. "Ferrari wants to win, has won, will win, when it is able to get everyone together," he told "What is important in Ferrari is not the individual, but it is the individuals. Those individuals, when they work together, they can do incredible things. That has been very much the case in Formula 1. "We all remember when we were victorious, and we were victorious because there was a very strong sense that incredible individuals – from our engineers, our mechanics, our pilots, our team principal – were really individuals that worked together. So it is not about the individual, but it's about the collective effort of great individuals who can achieve even more together." Regarding the decision to stick with Vasseur, who joined in early 2023, Elkann added: "We have really worked well with Fred, and when you work well, it is important to continue working well. The reality is that from the basis of these years, we all want to build more and we know that, in Formula 1, times are such that what you really need is engagement, trust, and make sure that the time is there with you. "The natural evolution of the relationship with Fred, that has been a very strong relationship and one that you can feel, and it is palpable in Ferrari, just the importance of how stability makes a big impact on results. That is really what we all want."
