
Tariff turmoil: How Tesla and other companies are dealing with the uncertainty of the trade war
Uncertainty over tariffs and an unpredictable trade war is weighing heavily on companies as they report their latest financial results and try to give investors financial forecasts. Some tariffs remain in place against key US trading partners, but others have been postponed to give nations time to negotiate. The tariff and trade picture has been shifting for months, sometimes changing drastically on a daily basis. Those shifts make it difficult for companies and investors to make a reliable assessment of any impact to costs and sales.
On Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he expects a "de-escalation" in the trade war between the US and China, but cautioned that talks between the two sides had yet to formally start. Here's how several big companies are dealing with the tariff confusion:
Tesla Tesla is in a better position than most car companies to deal with tariffs because it makes most of its US cars domestically. But it still sources materials from other nations and will face import taxes.
The bigger impact will be seen in the company's energy business. The company said the impact will be "outsized" because it sources LFP battery cells from China.
The broader trade war could also hurt the company as China, the world's largest electric vehicle market, retaliates against the US Tesla was forced earlier this month to stop taking orders from mainland customers for two models, its Model S and Model X. It makes the Model Y and Model 3 for the Chinese market at its factory in Shanghai. CEO Elon Musk, an adviser to President Donald Trump, on Tuesday reiterated that he believes "lower tariffs are generally a good idea for prosperity." But he added that ultimately the president decides on what tariffs to impose.
Akzo Nobel The Amsterdam-based maker of paints and coatings for industrial and commercial use said the big risk from tariffs could come in the form of lower demand for its products. The company said almost all sales of finished goods in the U.S. were locally produced, with the majority of raw materials locally sourced. "Over the years, we deliberately localized both our procurement and production in the US," said CEO Gregoire Poux-Guillaume, in a conference call with analysts. "We also largely run China for China and use the rest of Asia instead as an export base." The company's products range from paints and coatings for the automotive industry to the do-it-yourself homeowner. Broader tariffs could squeeze consumers and businesses and hurt sales. Boston Scientific The medical device maker said it expects most of the effecs of tariffs to hit the company during the second half of the year, but that it can absorb the impact. The company raised its earnings and revenue forecasts for the year, despite the tariffs. It estimates a $200 million impact from tariffs in 2025, but said it can offset that through higher sales and reductions in discretionary spending. The company said it has a long-standing supply chain around the globe and has made significant investments in the US Boeing Boeing said much of its supply chain is in the U.S. and many of its imports from Canada and Mexico are exempt from tariffs under an existing trade agreement. The company does have suppliers in Japan and Italy, but it expects to recover those tariff costs. The net annual cost of higher tariffs on the supply chain is less than $500 million. A bigger concern is the potential for retaliatory tariffs, which could impact its ability to deliver aircraft. China, a key target for US tariffs, has retaliated in part by no longer accepting deliveries of Boeing aircraft. AT&T AT&T, like its peers in the telecommunications sector, faces higher costs for cellphones and other equipment. The company said it believes it can manage anticipated higher costs, based on the current pause in some tariffs and its supply chain. "The magnitude of any increase will depend on a variety of factors, including how much of the tariffs the vendors pass on, the impact that the tariffs have on consumer and business demand," said CEO John Stankey, on a conference call with analysts.

'Don't see as competition': VinFast Asia CEO on rivaling Tesla with premium EV launch plans in India
VinFast, the electric vehicle arm of Vietnam's Vingroup, is preparing a bold entry into the Indian market- setting the stage for direct competition with Tesla. With bookings for its vehicles scheduled to open this month, VinFast is banking on its VF7 and VF6 models to establish itself as a premium EV brand in one of the world's fastest-growing auto markets. "We have our products in 16 countries, including Southeast Asia, the Middle East, the US… and VinFast will come to India with an entire ecosystem. Our first target is to position ourselves as the premium EV car in India through the VF7 and VF6, which we plan to roll out in the country by the festival season this year," said Chau, as quoted by news agency PTI. Though Tesla is widely expected to enter the Indian market with fanfare, Chau downplayed notions of rivalry. 'We don't see Tesla, or even BYD for that matter, as competition. Our mission is green mobility. Anyone who shares that dream will be our friend,' he said. Still, VinFast's plans clearly signal its intent to compete in the same space Tesla is eyeing- affluent urban buyers willing to pay a premium for electric innovation. "In Vietnam, we are the biggest selling car company, the largest charger and taxi service provider. We have done everything in Vietnam, and this is the time for us to go global. We wanted to enter India as it is a growing, dynamic automobile market," Chau announced talking about expanding in India. VinFast has already invested $500 million in its new manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, with a total outlay of $2 billion committed by 2030. Initial production capacity is pegged at 50,000 units annually, with a ramp-up to 150,000 planned based on demand. To support its launch, VinFast will showcase its models at high-traffic locations such as shopping centres and airports before bookings open. The VF7 and VF6, currently manufactured in Vietnam, will be imported initially, though localisation is central to the company's long-term strategy. 'Localisation will help with government incentives, reduce costs, and make us more competitive,' Chau also said, adding that the company does not currently benefit from duty exemptions in India. Pricing has not yet been finalised, but Chau promised it would be 'affordable' despite the premium positioning. 'India is a sensitive market, and we will have an affordable price,' he said, while stressing the VF7 and VF6 will be 'premium vehicles.' Beyond manufacturing, VinFast is laying the foundation for an EV ecosystem in India. This includes dealer networks, authorised service centres, charging infrastructure, and a used vehicle exchange program. Talks with state governments are underway to establish charging stations, with Chau expressing confidence in attracting support from Indian investors as well. By 2030, VinFast expects to employ up to 3,500 local workers, having already interviewed hundreds of engineering graduates from Tamil Nadu, accordingto Chau's statement to PTI. Gold's rally broke down in May. It's still doing better than stocks.
Gold futures fell 0.5% to $3,288.90 per troy ounce in May to snap a four-month winning streak, with the metal marking its biggest monthly decline in five months, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Gold is still up 25.1% this year, far outpacing the S&P 500's 0.5% 2025 gain. The price of gold's retreat has coincided with a broader stock market rally. Investors bought gold in April as worries about the U.S. spiked amid President Donald Trump's trade war, so some market participants took profits as tensions faded. It's no coincidence that gold hit a record of $3,411.40 per troy ounce on May 6 before retreating: that's right when the White House said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent would meet with China to discuss trade. Talks between the U.S. and China took place on May 10 in Switzerland. Gold pulled back while stocks rallied the following week, as traders reacted to news the U.S. would lower tariffs on China to 30% while both sides hammered out a deal. Fundstrat's head of technical strategy Mark Newton argues that precious metals like gold look to be near the end of their recent consolidation, meaning they could push back to fresh records in the months ahead. 'Safe-Haven trades like Japanese Yen and Gold should be starting to turn back higher, and I expect that Equities can still rally despite this happening into mid-June," Newton wrote in a Friday note. 'I favor Industrials, Financials, Technology and Utilities, while Emerging markets also have appeal given the drop in the US Dollar." Of course, the next move for gold may have more to do with the Trump administration's trade talks with China. Tensions have been higher in recent days, with Bessent saying on Thursday that talks had 'stalled." Trump on Friday said China has 'totally violated its agreement with us." U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer later that day told CNBC that China failed to restore exports of some rare-earth magnets used for electric motors. 'Recently, China has repeatedly raised concerns with the US regarding its abuse of export control measures in the semiconductor sector and other related practices," Liu Pengyu, a Chinese embassy spokesperson, said in a statement on Friday. 'China once again urges the US to immediately correct its erroneous actions, cease discriminatory restrictions against China and jointly uphold the consensus reached at the high-level talks in Geneva."
