PETALING JAYA : More than 300 protesters gathered peacefully outside Negeri Sembilan's state secretariat building in Seremban today to oppose the state's decision to cull stray dogs in Malay-majority areas.
Gabungan NGO Haiwan Malaysia, a coalition representing 40 animal welfare organisations, submitted a memorandum with more than 5,000 signatures opposing the plan.
It also urged state leaders to adopt humane alternatives instead of resorting to killing stray animals.
In a statement, the coalition urged menteri besar Aminuddin Harun to start an open dialogue with relevant ministries and agencies to explore humane alternatives for managing the state's stray animal population.
'Our message is simple, killing is not a solution,' it said.
'It is a short-term fix to a long-standing issue. What we need are sustainable measures such as spay and neuter programmes, responsible pet ownership, and stronger legal protections for animals.'
Aminuddin's political secretary, Nor Azman Mohamad, accepted the memorandum on behalf of the menteri besar.
Last week, Aminuddin said the state assembly had unanimously agreed that some stray dogs in predominantly Malay-Muslim residential areas should be culled to address safety concerns.
Since the announcement, the Malaysian Bar has urged the Attorney-General's Chambers to examine potential violations of federal law and take appropriate legal action against the state government's plan.
Bar president Ezri Abdul Wahab said the professional body firmly opposed the move, adding that any issue of overpopulation must be addressed legally and with compassion.

Ministry: Over 82,000 ‘immoral' social media posts in Malaysia taken down since 2022, over 37,000 more on false info

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — A total of 82,076 pieces of immoral content on social media were taken down by platform providers between Jan 1, 2022, and July 1 this year following requests by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The Ministry of Communications, in a written reply to Muhammad Ismi Mat Taib (PN-Parit) posted on the Parliament's website, said the removed content violated the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) as well as other existing laws. Other actions taken include the blocking of the Facebook page named Grup Budak-Budak Sekolah Rendah, which was found to contain elements that violated Section 233 of Act 588, including child sexual abuse material (CSAM). In response to Muhammad Ismi's question on the existence of immoral service offerings on social media apps, the ministry explained that those actions were part of joint anti-vice enforcement operations under Ops Pedo and Ops Noda, aimed at curbing the spread of inappropriate content on digital and social media platforms. The ministry clarified that content removals are subject to the assessment and discretion of social media platforms, based on their respective community guidelines and the application of relevant local laws. 'In addition to social media filtering, the government, through MCMC, has also implemented blocks and restrictions on applications offering immoral services on platforms such as Google Play and Apple Store,' the reply stated. However, the ministry noted that control over content on such platforms remains under the policies of their respective providers, which are foreign-owned and operated outside Malaysia. From Jan 1, 2022, to July 1, 2025, social media platforms also removed 37,845 instances of false information and 7,846 posts linked to the sensitive 3R issues (race, religion, and royalty) upon MCMC's request. In a separate response to Chong Zhemin (PH-Kampar), the ministry said these actions included the takedown of politically driven troll accounts that manipulated information to provoke racial and religious tensions. 'All takedown actions are executed in accordance with existing legislation, regardless of an individual's political affiliation or beliefs, to ensure that freedom of expression is not abused,' the ministry said. The ministry also confirmed that MCMC works closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in enforcing Act 588 and related laws. 'Action may be taken against any individual under Section 233 of Act 588 for misusing applications or social media services to create and disseminate false or offensive content, with the intent to annoy, harass or harm others,' it added. — Bernama

‘Attempt to shut my mouth': Rafizi alleges son's assault linked to scandal exposé

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has alleged that the attack on his son was an attempt to silence him from pursuing an ongoing scandal. Speaking at a press conference in the Parliament building today, Rafizi said that in his opinion, the assault was a strategy to ensure that he moves on and skip the matter altogether. 'I've given the same statement to the police, in my view, this is an attempt to shut my mouth, meaning there is something I'm looking at and this is a message (to me) so that I hands off from that matter,' he said 'Last week, there was a group of whistleblowers who came to me regarding a scandal, that I can tell. 'It means that, whoever is behind this knows, usually when I begin to look at a scandal I will dig and dig and dig and at the same time people with information will come forward,' he added. Rafizi says wife got threatening texts, recalls meeting with whistleblowers

Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli speaking at a press conference in Parliament, joined by other Pakatan Harapan MPs. KUALA LUMPUR : Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said his wife received two threatening text messages early this morning, a day after his son was attacked by two men with a syringe. According to Rafizi, his wife received a text message from an unknown number at 1.12am, reading: 'Be quiet. If you continue, AIDS.' At 11.02am, she received the same text message again followed by three syringe emojis. Rafizi said he suspected that the attack was linked to a case he was looking into, saying he had met with a group of whistleblowers just last week. 'Last week, I met with a group of whistleblowers regarding a scandal. In my opinion, this is an attempt to silence me and they want me to drop the case. 'I have given this information to the police and they are already aware of the phone number,' he said at a press conference in Parliament today. The attack on Rafizi's 12-year-old son occurred at a shopping mall in Putrajaya at around 2pm yesterday. The Pandan MP said CCTV footage showed that two men, dressed in black with their faces fully covered by helmets, had followed his wife's car on a motorcycle before the incident. His son, who was dragged and stabbed with a syringe, was rushed to the hospital for treatment and checks. The assailants meanwhile escaped. Rafizi said he believed the attack was planned in advance, and that his wife was likely surveilled by the assailants for a few days before the attack was carried out. 'I just moved house, so not many people know where I live. Clearly, my wife's movements have been tracked,' he said. He added however that his family was doing well and that his wife 'doesn't want to change course'. The former economy minister again vowed that he would not be silenced but would continue digging into the alleged scandal, details of which he did not disclose. He added that the necessary security arrangements would be made to ensure his family's safety.
