'Some things don't change though, and Alan (Shearer) is still here.'
Former England captain Rooney, 39, has joined the show after leaving his most recent spell in management at Plymouth back in December.
Chapman, 51, has previously hosted Match of the Day when Lineker was unavailable, and was the regular host of the Sunday show, Match of the Day 2.
From this season, the Sunday highlights, as well as the new Champions League highlights show, will all be known as Match of the Day.
On Wednesday, Cates hosted a programme to preview the new Premier League season alongside Rooney, Danny Murphy and Julien Laurens. Logan is due to host Match of the Day's Sunday night programme this week.
Lineker's final show came at the end of last season on May 26 in a long-planned move.
The 64-year-old had planned to front the BBC's live coverage of the FA Cup and 2026 World Cup, but brought forward his departure following a social media row in which he shared a post about Zionism featuring a depiction of a rat, historically used as an antisemitic trope.
Lineker, the BBC's highest-paid presenter and host of Match of the Day since 1999, apologised unreservedly for the post but said it was 'best for all concerned' if he left completely.

EastEnders' Joel actor comes from famous acting family including mum and aunt
EastEnders newcomer Max Murray has only been on Albert Square for a short time, but his character Joel Marshall has been causing nothing but trouble. Since his arrival in Walford, viewers have discovered that Joel's behaviour in Australia was what caused the family's money troubles, leading them to move back to the UK. It transpired that Joel had taken a picture up one of his class mates' skirts, before sharing the photo online. Joel's dad Ross Marshall (Alex Walkinshaw) paid the family off, but they demanded that Joel stay away from Sydney. Unfortunately, the move to Albert Square hasn't changed Joel's vile behaviour, and he was recently caught filming himself sleeping with Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James). Horrified that Joel had slept with his daughter, Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) lashed out at him, and that was without any knowledge of the secret recording. The character often expresses proof that he's been influenced by 'incel culture'. An incel is a member of an online community of young men. They consider themselves unable to attract woman sexually and have views that are often hostile towards women, and men who are sexually active. Joel has also been seen watching videos from a misogynistic influencer online. The last time Ross discovered Joel was continuing to view them, he threw his laptop in the sink and poured water over it. As he branded him a 'revolting, arrogant, disgusting little pervert', Joel pleaded for forgiveness. In real life, Max isn't the only member of his family to appear in the BBC soap, with the youngster following in the footsteps of his famous mum. Max is the son of actress and singer Gina Murray, who has had an extensive career on stage and screen. Gina appeared in an episode of EastEnders in 2014, where she played a woman called Helen. Helen was a specialist who arrived to help Carol Jackson find a wig after losing her hair during her battle with cancer. As well as EastEnders, Gina has also appeared on The Bill and Doctors, and more recently starred as Lesley Stobbart in The Hunt for Raoul Moat. She has also voiced characters in numerous video games, including RoboCop: Rogue City and Baldur's Gate 3. On stage, Gina has starred in musicals such as Hairspray, Mamma Mia andChicago, among others. In 2010, she formed a girl group alongside her fellow West End star sister Mazz Murray. Musical theatre legends Anna-Jane Casey and Emma Kershaw complete the line-up. More Trending The band, called Woman, recorded a single alongside Queen guitarist Brian May. Earlier this month, Mazz expressed her interest in joining BBC One's EastEnders in a quest to try something away from live audiences. She said in a chat with Hello! Magazine: 'I would love to do TV drama. I want to do EastEnders. I want to be challenged and try things that are different and new.' View More » This article was first published on May 14, 2025. Chelsea respond as Man City join race to sign Enzo Maresca favourite
Manchester City are among a number of Premier League clubs reportedly interested in signing one of Enzo Maresca's favourite Chelsea stars. Chelsea have gone into the 2025/26 season as one of the favourites for the Premier League title following their Club World Cup triumph in the summer. But they haven't got off to the best of starts, being held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace in their opening game on Sunday, with the Eagles arguably the better side at Stamford Bridge. While they have spent another £241million on new signings, Maresca is dealing with an injury crisis in defence, with Levi Colwill expected to miss the majority of the season due to a serious ACL injury, while Tosin Adarabioyo is also sidelined. Trevoh Chalobah and teenager Josh Acheampong started against Palace, with the latter impressively holding his own against Eberechi Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. This was only the 19-year-old's third Premier League start but the centre-back, who can also play right-back, is quickly becoming a fan-favourite and has even caught the eye of Chelsea's rivals. Acheampong was targeted by Real Madrid last year before he penned a five-year contract with the Blues, while Maresca confirmed over the summer that Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle had made enquiries over the defender. Now, according to The Guardian, Man City rate the player very highly but are yet to make a formal move, while Palace, Bournemouth and West Ham also keen on the England U20 star. It is said that Chelsea have already rejected a loan offer from Bournemouth and are expected to rebuff any other transfer approaches before deadline day on September 1. It is perhaps no surprise to see the Blues adopt this stance given how much Maresca has praised the youngster over the past year, even admitting in April that he had 'fallen in love' with the player. Speaking after the draw with Palace, the head coach said: 'Josh was very good. We showed our confidence in Josh last year as he played some games for us. 'Today he did very well, he dealt with Mateta very well, so overall he had a good game.' Acheampong made 13 senior appearances last season, helping Chelsea win the Club World Cup and Conference League. 87 passes 94% pass accuracy Most ground duels won (6) Most aerial won (5) Most tackles won (2) It is not known whether he would be interested in leaving Stamford Bridge but no doubt he will want guarantees over playing time, something that Chelsea should be able to offer given their defensive injuries. More Trending In addition to Colwill and Tosin, Benoit Badiashile is also sidelined and while Wesley Fofana was on the bench on Sunday, his fitness is always a concern. 'He [Tosin] had a physical problem, we don't know for how long,' Maresca added. 'Wes was on the bench, but he was just on the bench to be with us. The plan was not to get any minutes. And now, hopefully for the next one, we can start to use Wes for more minutes.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. It's a truth universally acknowledged that a house hunter in possession of a good fortune must be in want of an infamous literary TV home. At least that's what Knight Frank are banking on as they handle the sale of Luckington Court in Luckington, Wiltshire, which famously portrayed Longbourn in the BBC's 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. The grade II-listed country house, immortalised to millions as the home of protagonist Elizabeth Bennet and her family, is up for sale for £3.95million. The BBC's 1995 adaptation, featuring Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet and Colin Firth as the dashing Mr Darcy, is widely lauded as the best adaptation of the Jane Austen classic ever made. Those wanting to live their very own Jane Austen-inspired life can strut through the Queen Anne front pillared portico or wistfully meander through the mature gardens like the on-screen family. (Image: Kennedy News/Knight Frank) The historic country house, featuring a wood carved doorway reputedly by Grinling Gibbons, has eight bedrooms, seven bathrooms and six reception rooms, providing ample room for family life and entertainment. The second floor is a flat and games room. And there's plenty of outside space too, with extensive lawns approaching the house dominated by a 400-year-old Lebanese Cedar, which has one of the largest girths ever recorded in the UK. The new owners will also enjoy a tennis court, stable block, a dovecote, an outdoor riding school, home farm buildings, 1.27 acres of woodland and four well-presented cottages. James Walker, Regional Head of Central in Knight Frank's Country Department, said: "It is a privilege to be involved with the sale of Luckington Court, which is the epitome of a classic, small country estate. The next custodian will appreciate the subtle grandeur and the sense of pride it evokes. "Quintessentially English and wonderfully understated."
