
Surat targets 50% EV share on roads by 2030
Surat Municipal Corporation
(SMC) on Friday launched its Green Vehicle Policy (GVP) 2025 on Friday, setting an ambitious target of at least 50 per cent of all vehicles sold being electric by 2030.
Replacing the earlier Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2021, the new framework focuses on adoption of alternative fuels like hydrogen, biofuels, along with EVs. The policy will be implemented for five years. To support the growing number of EVs, over 460 charging stations will be established across the city, ensuring that there is at least one station per sq km, incentivising e-vehicle purchase through subsidies and creating necessary infrastructure.
Direct incentives in the form of subsidies will be provided to commercial electric three-wheelers, light commercial vehicles (LCVs), and pink e-autos for women entrepreneurs. Subsidies will vary by vehicle type and segment, making adoption economically viable. Incentives also include exemption from vehicle tax.
SMC will create a green vehicle cell, which will coordinate the implementation of the policy through a structured governance framework, including a technical committee and monitoring teams. A dedicated Green Vehicle Fund will also be formed, pooling resources from municipal funding, green bonds, CSR contributions, carbon financing, and govt grants. The cell will include officials from SMC, the Regional Transport Office (RTO), electricity distribution companies, traffic police, the members of The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and experts.
'The GV aligns with India's net-zero carbon goals and serves as a roadmap to make Surat a climate-resilient and environmentally-friendly urban centre. Through a combination of technological adoption, public-private collaboration, and citizen engagement, we aim to lead the green mobility revolution in the state,' said Rajan Patel, chairman, Standing Committee.
Additionally, the policy envisions the creation of green zones and mobility corridors to improve air quality and promote non-polluting transportation options. The development of GV manufacturing and assembling units locally will be promoted. The policy has a scope of projects for battery recycling. Future expansion plans include hydrogen and biofuel technologies through a structured roadmap focused on technology adaptation, infrastructure growth, and demand creation.
To enable a seamless experience for EV users, a network of 460 public charging stations will be deployed using the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Digital platforms, including a One EV App and a web portal, will streamline services and bring transparency to stakeholders.
The city will also host a GV Expo on Sept 8, showcasing innovations in GV technology and charging infrastructure.

Representative image NEW DELHI: Hindustan Zinc Ltd has entered into a Rs 400-crore deal with Essar group's GreenLine Mobility Solutions for decarbonising its logistics network by deploying the latter's advanced electric (EV) and trucks powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The deal envisages GreenLine deploying 100 electric trucks to replace diesel vehicles for inter-unit concentrate movement between the company's mines and smelters. Simultaneously, a commercial-scale battery swapping infrastructure will also be set up with three high-capacity stations to ensure round-the-clock operations. Additionally, GreenLine will add 100 LNG trucks to double Hindustan Zinc's current low-carbon fleet for long-haul finished goods transport. 'This large-scale deployment of EVs and LNG trucks will deliver cost efficiencies through discounted freight rates. It is estimated to reduce approximately 236 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions per month, equivalent to planting around 12,000 trees,' HZL chief executive Arun Misra said. Niti Aayog proposes stiffer taxes, stringent emission norms for fossil fuel vehicles to promote EVs
New Delhi: Nudges are not enough anymore. With India's electric vehicle (EV) adoption lagging behind global peers, Niti Aayog is pushing for a sharper pivot by proposing mandates, penalties, and steeper costs for fossil fuel vehicles to make the EV shift inevitable. The proposals mark a strategic shift from a decade of subsidies and incentives to a model that actively disincentivises petrol and diesel use. In a policy report released Monday, the government think tank called for higher registration fees, tougher emission norms and increased input taxes on internal combustion engine vehicles. Alongside city-level EV saturation pilots and targeted financing for electric buses and trucks, the push comes amid concerns over supply chain vulnerabilities, especially after China's export curbs on rare earth magnets. Niti Aayog's roadmap aims to speed up India's path to net-zero by 2070 and close the gap with EV leaders such as China and the US. Under the PLI-Auto scheme, manufacturers have to ensure that 50% of the components used to build a zero-emission vehicle are sourced locally.

CM Rekha Gupta forms committees for new excise, EV policies in Delhi

The excise policy committee will be headed by PWD Minister Parvesh Verma, while the electric vehicle policy committee will be headed by Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, she said. In a post on X, the chief minister said, 'Keeping social security in focus, the Delhi government has constituted a high-level committee to formulate a transparent excise policy, which will be headed by Cabinet Minister Shri @p_sahibsingh. 'Additionally, a special committee has been formed under the leadership of Cabinet Minister Shri @ashishsood_bjp to develop an effective and public-oriented EV (Electric Vehicle) policy for Delhi. Our government is committed to the holistic development of Delhi and is continuously taking decisions in the public interest. #ViksitDelhi," she said. Both the excise policy and EV policy have been extended multiple times in the absence of new policies. In June this year, the government extended its excise policy for the financial year 2025–26. The current policy was extended with effect from July 1 to March 31, 2026. The extended policy, also known as the old excise policy, came into operation in September 2022 after the then Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government scrapped its reformative policy (2021–22) that ran into rough weather amid allegations of irregularities in its formulation and implementation. The Delhi government had extended the current Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy until March 31, 2026, as the draft of the new policy will undergo public consultation, which is expected to take time, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh had said last month. The current EV policy, which was first introduced in 2020 during the previous Aam Aadmi Party rule, lapsed in August 2023. The policy has been extended several times since then.
