‘The Resident' EPs, Co-Stars Morris Chestnut & Shaunette Renée Wilson Pay Tribute To Malcolm-Jamal Warner: 'He Was Larger Than Life'
AJ was known for being a man of the people and principles. Through his character, the series brought to the forefront conversations around the complexities of the broken healthcare and immigration systems in the U.S., as well as adoption, through the character's personal experiences.

Fox's 'Memory Of A Killer' Adds Odeya Rush To Cast
As someone who covered the show during its six-season run, I can confidently say Warner, who died Sunday in a drowning accident in Costa Rica, shared great qualities with AJ. Not only were they caring and smart, but also intentional, thoughtful, and funny.
'Working with Malcolm was a joy. He was a fabulous actor and a stellar human being. He was larger than life, and brought a deep empathy and humanity to every scene. He was thoughtful, kind, and incredibly hard-working, a devoted family man with a dear wife and child. And if that weren't enough, he made us laugh. Our condolences to all who loved him as we did. His death is a tragic loss and he will be missed,' The Resident's executive producers Amy Holden Jones, Todd Harthan and Andrew Chapman in a group statement to Deadline on Monday.
RELATED:
Warner played AJ with pride and was always happy to speak to the media about the importance of the character existing in the mainstream, and how much fun it was to go toe-to-toe with Morris Chestnut when the latter joined during the show's third season. The battle of wits between Chestnut's character, the cocky neurosurgeon Barrett Cain, and The Raptor is legendary to fans of the series.
When Cain was gravely injured while trying to save a woman who had been in a car accident, AJ was there to support and challenge him.
'Heartbroken to hear about the passing of Malcolm-Jamal Warner,' Chestnut wrote today. 'Working alongside him on The Resident was an honor. He brought so much depth, warmth, and wisdom to every scene and every conversation. One of the nicest in the business. Rest easy, brother. Your legacy lives on.'

Warner also worked closely with Shaunette Renée Wilson, who played Mina Okafor on The Resident. Mina and AJ were the hot, hot, hot newest couple for a while, as their characters eventually built a relationship on a deeper level. Between AJ and Mina, there was a meeting of the minds, passion, and most importantly friendship and respect. It was through their pairing that the immigration storyline was explored: AJ proposed to Mina, but her visa was due to expire. Exhausted and frustrated from trying to secure a more long-term stay in the U.S., Mina self-deported to her native Nigeria. AJ was planning to join her and set off on a new adventure together, but he stayed behind to care for his ailing mother, who had cancer. Wilson left the series at the end of Season 4.
'Last week I had the impulse to text you for one of our lengthy heart check-ins. I truly wish I had so that one of the last words I had of you were of your wisdom, kindness, and that uncanny ability you had to be both unserious and profound within a single sentence. I'm beyond heartbroken. You were such a dear friend to me,' wrote Wilson via Instagram today.
She added, 'My heart goes out to the family and loved ones he leaves behind. I cannot conceive the amount of grief with such a tragedy. Rest in Power, Malcolm. It was a joy to be Mina to your AJ. I will miss you deeply. 💔'

The series also starred Bruce Greenwood, Manish Dayal, Emily VanCamp, Matt Czuchry and Jane Leeves.
Ken Laurence, lead tailor on The Resident, also remembered Warner.
'I had the pleasure of working w/ Malcolm-Jamal Warner, when I was the lead-tailor for 'The Resident'. He wasn't just an actor to me. He represented legacy. A pioneer in Black storytelling. A cultural icon. May his soul rest peacefully and in power for eternity,' he posted via X.
Warner was with the show across its six seasons as an actor, and he directed the Season 4 episode titled 'The Accidental Patient.' Following his run on The Resident, he returned to Fox in an episode of Accused, a crime drama anthology with each episode counting as its own story, in 2023. His final TV credit was on another Fox drama, Alert: Missing Persons Unit, in the role of Chief Inspector Bill Houston.
'Everyone at Fox is heartbroken by the tragic loss of our friend and colleague, the extraordinary Malcolm-Jamal Warner. While his iconic roles – from comedic to dramatic – are unforgettable and timeless, Malcolm will be remembered most for his warmth, kind heart and the lasting impact he had on his friends, family and fans everywhere. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones,' Fox shared in a statement.
When I first met Warner, I visited the set in Atlanta ahead of one of The Resident's early seasons. Having grown up watching him on The Cosby Show, I asked whether he ever considered AJ as a grown-up version of Theo, who followed in his father's footsteps and became a doctor. I remember he flashed his trademark smile, and he told me he had never considered that, but he was into it.
While Warner may be gone, he's left behind a plethora of work as his legacy, to be enjoyed by future generations.

TikTok videos of Sylvanian Families drinking and dealing drugs sparks legal battle
A lawsuit has been filed against a viral Tik Tok creator who makes dramatic videos of Sylvanian family toys drinking, dealing drugs and enacting violence. The videos, posted under the username @sylvaniandrama, tell outrageous stories featuring the toys including breaking fellow fury friends out of hostage situations, cheating on their partners and running each other over with toy cars. Japanese toymakers Epoch Company have filed an infringement case in the US, claiming the videos have caused 'irreparable damage' to its reputation. Irish creator and owner of the TikTok account, Thea von Engelbrechten, responded by filing a counternotice, claiming her videos are 'parody.' While the toys are intended for children, Sylvanian Drama uses the animals to explore adult themes, often embellishing them with fake eyelashes, jewellery and weapons to set the scene. Sylvanian Drama has amassed 2.5 million followers on TikTok and over 66 million likes, along with an additional one million followers on Instagram. The account which also posts on YouTube, X and Facebook has partnered with several brands for advertising campaigns, including luxury fashion houses Marc Jacobs and Burberry, and the online streaming service Netflix. When asked why she thought her videos were so popular in interview with Fohr, von Engelbrechten said: 'Maybe it's because it's coming from the voice of a 22-year-old who struggles with the same things as [they do]. 'I have a lot of storylines about insecure people, diet culture, toxic men, and sustainability, which I think other girls my age are also thinking a lot about." Court documents filed by Epoch in New York on July 4, first reported by the BBC, accused Von Engelbrechten of infringing the company's copyright without its permission, causing irreparable injury to its reputation. A date has been set for 14 August for a pre-trial conference where legal teams from both sides will meet to explore settlement options or prepare the case for trial. The small furry animal toys, first launched in 1985, are animal families – a mother, father, son and daughter, with species including cats, dogs, bears and foxes. The wholesome toys have names including the Walnut Squirrel Family, the Marmalade Bear Family and the Cottontail Rabbit Family. Epoch also produces accessories for the toys including caravans, bicycles, cottages and bakeries.

'The best mascara you'll ever try' – testing Kulfi Beauty, the latest cult beauty brand to hit the UK
Nowadays, the world of beauty is so globalised, we don't ever really have to wait long to try a brand that launches outside of the UK first. But, when it comes to US-based brand, Kulfi, it's been 4 years of watching our US-counterparts swatching and swiping the most delectable-looking formulas, longing for the brand to launch here across the pond. Well, today is finally the day. Aptly launching in South Asian Heritage Month, the South-Asian founded brand has hit Space NK so we naturally had to try everything. Ahead, the entire range tested on three different skin tones... We tested all 9 Kulfi products across multiple days, with a full face of all the products and mixing and matching with our current faves to compare and contrast. Below the Keeks, Lia and Humeara share their thoughts on the range. Humeara says: Packed with fruit extracts, niacinamide and hydrating glycerin, this primer acts more like skincare than makeup, in my opinion. It boasts a creamy, runny texture that feels slightly cooling, and it floods skin with moisture. Unlike other popular primers on the market (cough, Milk Hydrogrip and Benefit Porefessional, cough), it doesn't feel tacky or create a layer on top of your skin. Instead, it sinks in just like a moisturiser would, and you can even use it instead of one. I have simultaneously dehydrated and very oily skin, and my face usually looks like you can fry an egg on it by the end of the day, but this primer balances my skin and genuinely keeps it looking fresh for hours. Plus, there's no tint or cast, which makes it ideal for all skin tones. Humeara says: Of all the Kulfi products I got to try, this is what I was most excited for. I have a love-hate relationship with concealers; I need them, but they're usually too yellow or the undertones aren't quite right. I tried to match myself online and ended up with shades Cinnamon Bby, Khoya Kisses and Glossy Guava – all of which were too dark for me. In hindsight, I should've gone for Mango Drop. Despite this shade-matching mistake, I was able to blend the concealer out to cover my spots and dark circles without looking cakey or unnatural, which was very impressive considering the shade difference. My skin looked perfectly dewy and even, and the formula didn't oxidise or separate throughout the day. I'll definitely use this again in the right shade, but I do wish there were more shades with cool undertones – brown girls can have cool skin, too! Humeara says: My brows are my biggest flex. They're thick, bushy as hell, and really quite stubborn. Ergo, any brow gel of mine has to have glue-like grip and hold to really make an impact. Free The Brow is more of a soft and waxy texture, which is super nourishing and comfortable (thanks, vitamin E and sunflower oil), but misses the mark when it comes to hold. My brow hairs flopped within minutes, and I couldn't use this to create a laminated effect. For a brand that's inspired by South Asians, I'm disappointed that it couldn't cope with my typical South Asian hair. Humeara says: Before this, I hadn't worn black eyeliner in years, and I love that Kulfi pushed me to appreciate kohl again. I smudged it all around my eyes just like I would've as a kid, and I loved it. The pencil nib is perfectly jammy, which is ideal for drawing and smudging, but it quickly dries down and doesn't budge. It doesn't deposit much pigment in your actual waterline, but it works so well on skin and it doesn't flake or goop off into your eyes. Unless you're after the tightline look that requires pigment on your waterline, this is the perfect all-rounder: it's long-lasting, easy to use, comfortable, and it comes in loads of fun shades. I'm obsessed with it and I've worn it every day since testing! Kulfi Badi Lash Mascara Lia says: As a self-titled mascara aficionado, I know a good formula when I try one. And Kulfi's? It's one of the best I've tried. Like, ever. For starters, the shape of the wand – specifically the ball tip applicator – makes it super easy to reach the inner and outer corner lashes. Not to mention the silicone bristles that separate lashes with ease. And then there's the formula. With every lick, lashes grow longer and thicker, without looking or feeling heavy or spidery, while the peptide complex BTS works to nourish and promote lash health. Removal-wise, this is a tubing formula, meaning that at the end of the day, when cleansing your face, it slides right off in more or less one swipe. Basically, it's an all-around winner and hits every checkpoint you could ever want in a mascara. Lia says: On first glance, I was concerned that this shadow would crease on the eyes because of its creamy formula. However, after blending, it dries down into a self-setting, crease-proof shimmer that does not budge all day. That all said, its the seven experimental shades that are the real selling points, IMO. I mean, the blue duo chrome?! Nothing short of stunning. Kulfi Lassi Lips Lip Staining Oil Lia says: If you're investing in a pigmented lip oil, you're going to want colour pigment (duh), hydration and comfort. And Lassi Lips does all three – and more. This lip oil is actually a hybrid, acting as a glossy, nourishing formula on first application, but after it's worn off, leaving a stain on the lips. Plus, it doesn't go on streaky, meaning you can apply without a mirror and be good to go. Kulfi Heirloom Satin Lipstick Keeks says: So, I am a certified nude lipstick hoarder. I have dozens and I rotate them in and out of my handbags like nobody's business, but, since trying this lipstick in the shade Ma's Misra I have been hooked. I love the way the pink shade skews more cool brown. This teamed with a brown liner makes my lips look so much more full and juicy. The formula is not drying or stiff – it glides on but does stay put. Kulfi Mendi Moment Blush Keeks says: I imagine if Glossier Cloud Paint and Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Flushed Blurring Balm Powder had a baby, you'd be met with this creamy blush. The texture melts into the skin easily but I love that it sets quite matte, as a lot of non-powder blushes are too dewy for my oily skin to last all day. The shade Pinky Promise it s the lightest of the bunch, which means I would automatically veto, but it gives me a beautiful lit from within glow that genuinely would suit all skin tones whether you choose to amp it up or sheer it out.
