Watch: Elephant pulls stuck SUV out of river in Kerala, the Internet is amazed

Indian Express6 days ago

Elephants are revered for their intelligence, strength, and loyalty, and once again, one has proven why. A jaw-dropping video from Kerala is going viral on Instagram, showing a majestic elephant pulling a white Toyota Fortuner sports utility vehicle (SUV) out of a riverbed with ease.
The video begins with the SUV stuck in a shallow river, its wheels, except the front left, submerged. Unable to move, the situation seems hopeless until a mahout (a trained elephant handler) arrives with his elephant, Thiruvegappura Sankaranarayanan.
We next see the elephant gripping a rope tied to the vehicle's front axle with his trunk. Under the mahout's guidance, Sankaranarayanan begins to pull with sheer strength, managing to drag the heavy SUV onto solid ground within seconds. The force and precision displayed have left viewers stunned.
The video was shared on Instagram by user @saidkoya90 with the caption, 'Thiruvegappura Sankaranarayanan… Our little elephant…' and has since amassed over 2.4 million views and 172,000 likes.

Comments poured in, celebrating the animal's power and grace. 'This Fortuner in front of the elephant looks like a Maruti 800,' wrote one user. Another noted, 'We use elephants instead of tow trucks—eco-friendly and majestic.' A third user said, 'There are people who are suitable for everything here. This is Thiruvagapuren.'
This isn't the first time elephants have gone viral. Recently, another video surfaced showing an elephant disabling an electric fence with remarkable precision, proving once again that elephants are not only strong but also incredibly smart.
In India, elephants have traditionally played important roles, not only in festivals and ceremonies but also in industries like logging. While the use of elephants in labour has decreased due to ethical concerns, some domesticated elephants are still employed for specific tasks like logging timber and rescue and relief in difficult terrains under expert supervision.

SUV hits man, flinging him into drain in Noida; police launch probe as video goes viral

A Mahindra Thar SUV rammed into a man, sending him flying into a roadside drain in Noida's Sector 53 on Monday, the police said Tuesday, adding that they have registered a case and are trying to trace the accused. The incident, a video of which has gone viral, appeared to be the fallout of an online spat. 'On Monday, a scuffle occurred between two groups near Sector 53, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Sector 24 police station,' said Sumit Kumar Shukla, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Noida. 'A video also went viral in which one party rammed the other with their vehicle. When we investigated, we found that the dispute between the two parties happened over some comments on Instagram,' the ADCP stated. Both groups are familiar with each other, he said. In a purported video of the incident, a man who is bleeding through his nose can be seen walking alone on the streets when a black Thar hits him from behind and sends him flying into the empty drain. The man, identified as Saurabh, 24, said he had gone to meet a friend in Noida along with his younger brother. 'My friend had called me saying that a group of men had been misbehaving with him. When we reached there, I realised that these were the same men who had earlier filed a case against us which was quashed over lack of evidence.' 'They soon started attacking us with sticks, rods and knives. They hit me with the Thar twice,' he alleged. The Sector 24 police have registered a case for rash driving, causing hurt, and criminal intimidation. 'We have sent the injured people for a medical examination and have formed three teams to nab the accused and take the vehicle into possession,' Shukla said. The police are trying to identify the accused and arrests will be made soon, the ADCP added. Neetika Jha is a trainee reporter with The Indian Express, Delhi. Toyota FJ Cruiser Design Patent Leaked- Will It Come To India?

Toyota teased a shadowy teaser of an SUV two years ago, showing a boxy design. Since then, there have been multiple hints that the Japanese manufacturer is putting in efforts to develop a relatively small off-road capable SUV. However, until now, we have not had a clear view of the vehicle's design. This changes now as the design patent of the new Toyota FJ Cruiser has surfaced. The automaker filed the design patent back in January 2024, but it was only recently discovered. The image shows multiple similarities to the shadowy image showcased by the automaker earlier. Because of the details of the SUV revealed earlier, it was touted to be a mini-Fortuner. Many reports even claimed that this SUV will be the latest addition to the automaker's India lineup. But is this claim based on facts? We will circle back to the question after taking a look at the design of the SUV. With a butch design, the Toyota FJ Cruiser will likely be based on an altered version of the IMV ladder frame chassis. This platform has been employed by the brand on the Hilux Champ pickup, which is on sale in some Asian countries like Thailand and Indonesia. In the Indian market, this platform underpins the Hilux, Fortuner, and Innova Crysta. The image also reveals that the FJ Cruiser will have a design consisting of straight lines. This will be complemented by the presence of prominent front fenders, thick C-pillars, and an upright rear end with a full-size spare wheel mounted on the rear gate. Meanwhile, the lower end of the vehicle, including the bumpers, fenders, and side skirts, are covered in plastic cladding, highlighting its off-road capabilities. The brand also seems to have placed the SUV rather high off the ground. This quality of the vehicle will be even more pronounced if equipped with off-road capable tires when it enters the real world. There is no word on the powertrain of the vehicle. However, the SUV is likely to have a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine of the brand, which is also found under the hood of the Fortuner. Toyota has not ascertained that the FJ Cruiser will be launched in the Indian market. However, if it finds its way into the subcontinent, it will likely be placed below the Fortuner to compete against the likes of the Mahindra Thar Roxx.
