A 29-year-old man, Mthobisi Shezi, appeared before the Delmas District Court in Mpumalanga on Monday after allegedly purchasing a Toyota Fortuner sport utility vehicle (SUV) using fraudulent documents.
On Saturday, the Hawks' Secunda-based serious corruption investigation team and the serious commercial crime investigation unit arrested Shezi in Greytown, KwaZulu-Natal.
'The suspect allegedly purchased a Toyota Fortuner on credit by submitting fraudulent bank statements and fraudulent payslips to the finance institution in Delmas,' said Mpumalanga provincial Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi.
Shezi allegedly received the popular SUV, worth R455,900, in October 2020.
'Ever since the vehicle was driven out of the dealership, not a single installment has been paid in the past five years,' said Nkosi.
The financial institution turned to the Hawks for investigation, and a thorough investigation led the team to Greytown in KwaZulu-Natal, where Shezi was arrested on Saturday.

Meanwhile, provincial head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, Major General Nico Gerber has welcomed Shezi's arrest, and commended the investigating teams for their thorough efforts in tracking down the wanted man.
Last year, IOL reported that the Middleburg Magistrate's Court convicted and sentenced Jacob Aphane for vehicle fraud after he used fake documents to purchase a Suzuki Ertiga, and did not pay the monthly instalments.
The conviction and sentence came after Aphane was charged with vehicle finance fraud to the value of R496,211.
'It was reported that on October 7, 2022, the accused applied for vehicle finance at Yagos 4 Wheel Cars in Middelburg, using fraudulent documents, a payslip and a bank statement. He alleged that he was employed at GT Auto Company in Marblehall. Wesbank approved the finance application based on the fraudulent documents presented,' Lieutenant Colonel Sekgotodi Dineo said at the time.
After the approval, Aphane collected the vehicle, a Suzuki Ertiga.

However, Aphane did not pay the monthly instalments for more than three months.
'The bank tried to locate him, but he was not found. The matter was reported to the Hawks' Middelburg-based serious commercial crime investigation for further probe. During the investigation, it was established that the company (which Aphane claimed to work for) does not exist,' said Sekgotodi.

Bid for promotion leads to arrest for ‘degree fraud'

An Eastern Cape prosecutor has been arrested by the Hawks on charges of fraud, forgery and uttering for allegedly submitting forged academic qualifications to secure employment. Police spokesperson W/O Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana said the 33-year-old had been enrolled for a Bachelor of law (LLB) degree at Walter Sisulu University (WSU) between January 2010 and December 2016. He allegedly failed to meet the academic requirements to graduate. Despite this, he allegedly submitted a falsified LLB degree certificate and a bogus legal education and development (Lead) attendance report as part of his application to the National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) aspirant prosecutor programme, which required a legitimate LLB qualification or proof of final year status. Mhlakuvana said the accused was appointed as an aspirant prosecutor i n January 2021 and later elevated to the position of public prosecutor. Proof of his qualifications was requested when he sought to climb the career ladder. "The accused applied for promotion at regional court as a prosecutor using the same credentials and he was shortlisted for appointment. However, the NPA requested him to submit the original academic certificates," Mhlakuvana said. He resigned with effect from March 15. "The institution picked up discrepancies in his qualifications and referred the matter to the Hawks for investigation. "The Hawks confirmed WSU had never conferred an LLB degree to him and Lead had never issued him the attendance report due to outstanding fees. "Through misrepresentation, the NPA suffered financial prejudice of more than R1.1m from the salaries paid to him during his fraudulent term of employment." The would-be prosecutor was arrested on July 22 and briefly appeared before the Mthatha specialised commercial crime court on the same day, where he was granted R5,000 bail. The case was postponed to August 18. TimesLIVE

South African man jailed for attempting to smuggle stolen Toyota Hilux to Zimbabwe

Jonisayi Maromo | Published 1 week ago A 34-year-old man, Solomon Chiloane, has appeared before the Mokopane Magistrate's Court in Limpopo, after he was arrested for possession of a suspected stolen vehicle. The case against Chiloane was postponed to 29 July 2025 for further investigations, while he was remanded in custody. Chiloane was arrested after police in Limpopo received information about a stolen Toyota Hilux bakkie. The vehicle was reported stolen on Saturday around the Lyttleton policing area in Tshwane. 'On Monday, information was received about the bakkie that was reportedly driven from Gauteng province along the R101 public road headed to Limpopo province,' said provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba. The Limpopo anti-smuggling task team and private security companies sprang into action and a joint operation was activated. The bakkie was positively spotted entering the town of Mokopane, and it was intercepted and searched. 'A 34-year-old male driver could not provide a satisfactory response about the origin of the white Toyota Hilux bakkie, valued at more than R700,000, and was immediately placed under arrest on the spot for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle,' said Ledwaba. 'Preliminary investigations revealed that the bakkie was intended to be illegally smuggled to Zimbabwe.' Police in Limpopo said they have established that Chiloane is a South African national. Meanwhile, the provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has welcomed Chiloane's arrest and the recovery of the stolen vehicle. 'This collaboration between police and private security has proven from time to time that working jointly we can achieve more in combating the organized syndicate targeting vehicle smuggling,' said Hadebe. On Tuesday, IOL reported that a 48-year-old Zimbabwean man, Stephen Nyoni, has been remanded in custody after appearing in a Limpopo court for possessing a stolen vehicle. The high-performance luxury sport utility vehicle, valued at over R2.5 million, was intercepted during a targeted anti-smuggling operation. The anti-crime blitz was conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo in collaboration with private security partners along the N1 highway near Polokwane.
