How miserable are Nashville pro sports fans? It's been 'woeful'

Yahoo7 hours ago
Fans of Nashville's three professional sports — the Tennessee Titans, Nashville Predators, and Nashville SC — may feel they are among the most miserable in the country.
And according to a misery index published by ESPN, they are correct.
The "Sports Misery Index" is a tool that calculates the misery of your fandom among professional teams, giving you an average misery score that is generally higher if your team loses a lot of regular season games and has little to no postseason success.
The higher the misery index, the more miserable the fan. For example, the Colorado Rockies have a misery score of 95 (out of 100), one of the highest among professional teams. Fans of the Kansas City Chiefs have a score of zero.
Note that the number of years you've been a fan of the team does factor into the score. For example, if you've been a fan of the New England Patriots for just the past five years, your misery score is 92. If you've been a fan of the Patriots for 15 or more years, your misery score is zero.
So where do Nashville sports fans rank?
How miserable are fans of Tennessee Titans, Nashville Predators, and Nashville SC?
By combining the misery score of the Titans, Predators, and Nashville SC, fans can expect a score of 84 out of 100. That places them in the "Woeful" category, the highest level of misery possible. Note this calculates fans of 15 or more years of the Titans and Predators and fans of five or more years for Nashville SC.
These results may not be surprising considering how poorly Nashville sports have performed, especially recently. The Titans are coming off a 3-14 season and have not won a playoff game since January 2020, when they beat the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round. The Predators finished third worst in the NHL last season and have not won a playoff round since 2018, when they beat the Colorado Avalanche in six games. Though they did not make the postseason last year, Nashville SC has had the most recent success, making it to the quarterfinal round of the MLS Cup in 2021.
Overall fans of Tennessee sports — which includes the Memphis Grizzlies — can expect a score of 74, which puts fans in the "Flailing" category. The Grizzlies have qualified for the playoffs in four of the last five years, beating the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the NBA playoffs in 2022.
Note that college teams are not included in the index.
Adding to the misery, none of Tennessee's major professional sports have won a championship in their history. Two teams came close — the Titans lost to the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl 34 in 2000 and the Predators lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup Final in 2017.
ESTES: The Titans are trying hard to be a closer team. Will that make them a better one?

Titans QB Cam Ward all jokes after dust-up with Jeffery Simmons

It took all of two days for the fallout from the Tennessee Titans' Monday practice scuffle to blow over. Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward was all jokes when speaking to reporters Wednesday about his incident with defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons at practice on Monday. "Did I learn anything from it? Jeff's strong as (expletive)," Ward said. "I think it was what we needed though. We love competing, especially me and Jeff. "I'm excited to have that man as my teammate. I can't wait to see what he do on Sundays – I already know what he about, but I get to see the real thing coming soon." CAM WARD: Titans' QB on practice scuffle with Jeffery Simmons: 'I think it was what we needed' The "conflict" – if it can be called that anymore – started Monday when Ward threw a touchdown pass near the end of practice before hitting his signature, "Zombieland" celebration in Simmons' face. He shoved Simmons, Simmons shoved back, and the offensive line rushed to Ward's defense. Nick Suss of the Tennesseean (part of the USA TODAY Network) reported that the scrum lasted "about 15-20 seconds. Then play resumed." "That's me and Jeff's relationship," Ward said Wednesday. "I wake up, I get here, he damn near the first one I'm ready to talk (expletive) to." And Ward fully expects Simmons to give that smack-talk back, saying the defensive tackle is one of the first to do so every day at practice.

Rookie Titans QB Cam Ward addresses practice scuffle with Pro Bowl defender Jeffery Simmons: 'It was fun'

Cam Ward and Jefferey Simmons got into it at Tennessee Titans practice on Monday. On Wednesday, Ward addressed the scuffle with reporters. To the Titans quarterback, it was no big deal. In fact, Ward said, it was fun. Here's what he had to say on Wednesday when asked if he'd learned anything from the scuffle: "Did I learn anything from it? Jeff's strong as s***," Ward quipped. Ward went on to say that the scuffle was good for the team and indicated that there's no ill will between him and Simmons. "It was fun. At the same time, I think it was what we needed, though," Ward continued. "We love competing, especially with me and Jeff. I'm excited to have that man as my teammate. "I can't wait to see what he do on Sundays. I already know what he's about. But I can see the real thing coming soon." [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Simmons didn't address the dustup with media. But unless he's got a different version than Ward, things appear to be just fine between Tennessee's No. 1 pick rookie quarterback and its three-time Pro Bowl defensive captain. What happened There's no published video of the scuffle. But multiple reporters were on the scene and provided an account of the dustup that took place during a red-zone drill. According to A to Z Sports' Easton Freeze, Ward threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Calvin Ridley. After the pass, Ward shoved Simmons in the back. Ward then hit him with his signature "Zombieland" celebration that he made famous as a Heisman Trophy finalist at Miami. Per ESPN, Simmons responded with a two-hand shove to Ward's facemask, prompting Ward's offensive teammates to come to his defense. Simmons lost his helmet during the fracas and left the field when it was subdued. He did not return to the drill, which was over after two more plays, per the report. Cornerback Jarvis Brownlee was on the field and offered his perspective of the scuffle on Monday. Like Ward, Brownlee chalked the incident up as a positive while praising Ward's and Simmons' competitive fire. "I feel like it's a great thing," Brownlee said. "When you've got great teams, brothers fight. At the end of the day, as long as we all have got each other's back, we all connected. "We all got that bond. We all got that same connection where we're gonna fight for one another, that's the most important thing at the end of the day." Ward and Simmons, meanwhile, already have an established off-field relationship. Simmons has taken Ward fishing and posted a photo of the two on a boat in July. So all does appear to be fine among Tennessee's offensive and defensive leaders. The next step will be translating their practice intensity to a tough Week 1 matchup on the road against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 7.

Cam Ward: Scuffle with Jeffery Simmons was fun, what we needed

Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons wasn't interested in talking about his brief scuffle with quarterback Cam Ward at practice earlier this week, but Ward didn't seem to have any trouble talking about it on Wednesday. Ward threw a touchdown in practice and then shoved Simmons before breaking out his "Zombieland" celebration. Simmons responded by shoving Ward and members of the offensive line came to the quarterback's defense. Reporters on the Titans beat noted that the two players have done a lot of talking in practices this summer. Ward said Simmons told him that would be the case at Titans minicamp and that Simmons is "the first one that come at my head every day at practice." He added that he thought the scrap was a good thing overall. "Jeff is strong as shit," Ward said, via Turron Davenport of "It was fun, and I think it was what we needed. We love competing, just with me and Jeff, and I'm excited to have that man as my teammate." The Titans haven't been overflowing with energy on the field the last couple of years. This week's incident may be a sign that Ward has provided a refill to the tank and the Titans will be hoping it carries over to the regular season.
