The crude oil market bets Trump's India threats are hollow
The crude oil market is calm despite U.S. threats to India over Russian oil. Trump imposed tariffs due to India's oil imports. These tariffs may halt U.S. imports from India. Trump aims to pressure Russia before meeting Putin. India might stop buying Russian oil to avoid tariffs. The market expects India to find alternative oil sources. Tired of too many ads? The crude oil market 's rather sanguine reaction to the U.S. threats to India over its continued purchases of Russian oil is effectively a bet that very little will actually Donald Trump cited India's imports of Russian crude when imposing an additional 25% tariff on imports from India on August 6, which is due to take effect on August the new tariff rate does come into place, it will take the rate for some Indian goods to as much as 50%, a level high enough to effectively end U.S. imports from India, which totalled nearly $87 billion in with everything related to Trump, it pays to be cautious given his track record of backflips and also not exactly clear what Trump is ultimately seeking, although it does seem that in the short term he wants to increase his leverage with Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of their planned meeting in Alaska this week, and he's using India to achieve Trump follows through on his additional tariffs on India remains uncertain, although the chances of a peace deal in Ukraine seem remote, which means the best path for India to avoid the tariffs would be to acquiesce and stop buying Russian this is an outcome that simply isn't being reflected in current crude oil benchmark Brent futures have weakened since Trump's announcement of higher tariffs on India, dropping as low as $65.81 a barrel in early Asian trade on Monday, the lowest level in two is a price that entirely discounts any threat to global supplies, and assumes that India will either continue buying Russian crude at current volumes, or be able to easily source suitable replacements without tightening the global these reasonable assumptions? The track record of the crude oil market is somewhat remarkable in that it quickly adapts to new geopolitical realities and any price spikes tend to be Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 sent crude prices hurtling toward $150 a barrel as European and other Western countries pulled back from buying Russian within four months the price was back below where it was before Moscow's attack on its neighbour as the market simply re-routed the now discounted Russian oil to China and other words, the flow of oil around the globe was shifted, but the volumes available for importers remained much the what Trump is proposing now is somewhat different. It appears he wants to cut Russian barrels out of the market in order to put financial pressure on Moscow to cut a deal over are effectively only two major buyers for Russian crude, India and the world's biggest crude importer, has more leverage with Trump given U.S. and Western reliance on its refined critical and other minerals, and therefore is less able to be coerced into ending its imports of Russian is in a less strong position, especially private refiners like Reliance Industries , which will want to keep business relationships and access to Western imported about 1.8 million barrels per day of Russian crude in the first half of the year, or about 37% of its total, according to data compiled by commodity analysts Kpler About 90% of its Russian imports came from Russia's European ports and was mainly Urals is a medium sour crude and it would raise challenges for Indian refiners if they sought to replace all their Urals imports with similar grades from other are some Middle Eastern grades of similar quality, such as Saudi Arabia's Arab Light and Iraq's Basrah Light, but it would likely boost prices if India were to seek more of these Chinese refiners were able to take the bulk of Russian crude given up by India, it may allow for a re-shuffling of flows, but that would not appear to be what Trump and his advisers may believe there is enough spare crude production capacity in the United States and elsewhere to handle the loss of up to 2 million bpd of Russian testing that theory may well lead to higher prices, especially for certain types of medium crudes which would be in short simplistic to say that higher U.S. output can supply India's refiners, as this would mean those refiners would have to be willing to accept a different mix of refined products, including producing less diesel, as U.S. light crudes tend to make more products such as now the crude oil market is assuming that the Trump/India/Russia situation will end as another TACO, the acronym for Trump Always Chickens the reality is likely to be slightly more messy, as some Indian refiners pull back from importing from Russia, some Chinese refiners may buy more and once again the oil market goes on a geopolitical this column? Aug 11, 2025 09:50 IST Australia To Recognize Palestine As A State Australia will recognize Palestine as a state, a major foreign policy change announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, AP says in a report. This decision marks a departure from Australia's historical stance of awaiting a negotiated two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians. The move follows similar recognitions by European nations like Spain, Ireland, and Norway in May 2024 and comes amid increased international pressure for a political resolution to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. While largely symbolic, the recognition is seen as a diplomatic victory for the Palestinian Authority and adds to the global momentum for Palestinian statehood. The 2025 Atradius Payment Practices Barometer survey, which polled firms in China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam, highlights a tension between the region's economic resilience and rising financial vulnerabilities. These challenges are driven by a persistent global economic slowdown, ongoing US-China trade and technology disputes, and elevated inflation, which are increasing credit risks and the potential for bad debts for businesses. The backlash, which included formal condemnation from Mexico's Ministry of Culture, highlights a growing trend of international fashion brands facing accusations of cultural appropriation. This incident places Adidas under increased scrutiny regarding its ethical design and sourcing processes, posing a potential reputational risk and underscoring the broader industry challenge of respecting and compensating for the use of traditional cultural heritage. The controversy also brings attention to the ongoing global debate surrounding intellectual property rights for Indigenous communities and the inadequacies of current legal frameworks to protect their traditional craftsmanship from commercial exploitation. Aug 11, 2025 09:50 IST White House Responds To Christian Persecution Crisis In Sub-Saharan Africa The White House and the State Department are formulating a response to a surge in deadly attacks on Christian communities by Islamic State-allied militants in sub-Saharan Africa, Fox News says in a report. This action follows recent massacres in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) carried out by groups such as the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). The US response could involve increased diplomatic pressure, targeted sanctions, and counter-terrorism assistance to combat the extremist groups, which are contributing to a severe humanitarian crisis and regional instability. While Christians are frequently targeted, the broader violence impacts all local populations amid a complex mix of religious extremism and inter-communal conflict. Aug 11, 2025 09:50 IST Flash Floods In China's Gansu Province Leave At Least 15 Dead At least 15 people have died and dozens are missing after severe flash floods struck China's northwestern Gansu province, according to a report in BBC. Aug 11, 2025 09:50 IST German Opposition Leader Defends Partial Weapons Halt To Israel German opposition leader Friedrich Merz has publicly defended the government's decision to implement a partial halt on weapons sales to Israel, asserting that Berlin's fundamental commitment to Israel's security has not changed, according to a report in Deutsche Welle. The move, which involves a limited set of weapons rather than a full embargo, has drawn a response from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who stated he hopes for a reversal of the policy. This development occurs amid significant international pressure on Germany, including a case filed by Nicaragua at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in March 2024 accusing Germany of facilitating genocide in Gaza through its military and financial support to Israel. Aug 11, 2025 09:50 IST Protests In Israel Mount Against Plan To Expand Gaza War Protests in Israel have intensified as demonstrators increase pressure on the government to halt plans for expanding the war in Gaza, particularly a potential ground offensive in Rafah, as per a report in BBC. This domestic dissent coincides with a deepening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where the Hamas-run health ministry reported that five people, including two children, died from malnutrition in the last 24 hours. The ongoing protests reflect growing public discontent with the government's handling of the war and the hostage situation, adding pressure that could impact the ruling coalition's stability and influence future military strategy. The police action represents a significant enforcement of the new counter-extremism measures, with the group's supporters deliberately testing the legal boundaries. A separate pro-Palestinian demonstration also occurred in central London on Sunday. The situation is fueled by a combination of factors, including climate change-driven heatwaves, chronic underinvestment in an aging power grid hampered by international sanctions, and decades of water mismanagement. These interconnected issues create a vicious cycle: extreme heat increases electricity demand for cooling, while drought reduces hydropower capacity, crippling both the energy and water sectors.
