‘I Know What You Did Last Summer' red carpet reunites Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar and more

Yahoo4 days ago
Iconic '90s stars have called — and we're hooked.
Twenty-eight years after the 1997 slasher 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' hit theaters, the cast of the sequel stepped out for its premiere at LA's United Theater on Broadway on Monday.
Along with new faces, including Madelyn Cline, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Chase Sui Wonders, the crowds got a blast from the past.
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. — who starred in the original project together — turned the premiere into date night.
Prinze Jr., 49, reprises his role as Ray Bronson in the sequel. Gellar, 48, played Helen Shivers, who died in the OG movie.
The original Kevin Williamson-written film followed a group of four friends who accidentally kill a man. One year later, they're stalked by a hook-wielding killer. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ryan Phillippe rounded out the cast.
Phillippe's character, Barry William Cox, was also murdered.
The sequel, 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,' was released in 1998.
According to Sony Pictures, the 2025 movie follows five friends who 'inadvertently cause a deadly car accident' before they 'cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences.'
However, 'a year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they're forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer…and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.'
Despite not being in the project, Gellar still came out to support her husband of 23 years. She donned a strapless, Oscar de la Renta butterfly mini dress and matched the carpet with a blue and orange color scheme.
The 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' star accessorized with an orange leather clutch, orange pumps, and kept her long, blonde hair down.
Prinze coordinated with his other half, sporting a navy blue linen suit and loafers.
In October 1997, the pair walked the carpet for the original horror movie separately at the GCC Galaxy Theatre in Hollywood, Calif.
Gellar and Prinze first met on the set of 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' but didn't start dating until 2000.
'History repeating itself! Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. at the I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER premiere in 1997 and again in 2025,' Gellar's friend, Evan Ross Katz, wrote on Instagram beneath a side-by-side shot from both carpets.
Jennifer Love Hewitt, who stars as Julie James in the slasher franchise, also stunned on the red carpet. The actress, 46, wore a Rachel Gilbert black dress embellished with jewels and matching closed-toe heels. Unlike her brunette character, the scream queen rocked ginger-red hair for the big night.
She joins Prinze Jr. onscreen for the new film.
Gellar had another nostalgic run-in on Monday night. The 'Ringer' actress posed with her 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' co-star, Seth Green. Their reunion comes five months after Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Buffy's little sister Dawn Summers, died at age 39.
Gellar is currently in production for the reboot of the hit mystical drama series.
In May, the 'Cruel Intentions' alum announced that Ryan Kiera Armstrong will play the new slayer. The show is set to be the next chapter in the Buffyverse.
Gellar, meanwhile, spoke out in October about not returning to the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' franchise.
She simply told People at the time, 'I am dead.'
'My best friend [Jennifer Kaytin Robinson] is directing it, so we joke that I have an unofficial job, which is I am continuity,' Gellar explained. 'So I'm always the one telling her, 'Well, that would happen, or that wouldn't happen with those characters,' so I do have kind of an unofficial job title.'
Earlier this month, Prinze Jr. weighed in on reuniting with Hewitt on the project.
'Whatever a high school union feels like, that's what it felt like,' he expressed to People. 'You have no idea what's changed, what's the same. You're excited to show what you think you're better at. You hope they notice it. It was all those things.'
Due to the tight filming schedule, 'there just had to be trust that each of us cared enough to put the work in,' Prinze Jr. continued. 'I didn't have any reason not to trust her. I know how much this character means to her. She puts everything into this girl and always has since the first movie.'
Hewitt, for her part, had some reservations about re-joining the cast.
'I'll be super honest, I had total anxiety for 48 hours before [filming] because I was like, 'Can I do this? Am I going to pull this off?' It's a lot of pressure,' she told People in April.
Despite her fear, the 'Holiday Junkie' vet was grateful to be asked back.
'As a female in Hollywood, in your 40s, sometimes you can feel forgotten about,' Hewitt confessed, noting that she felt 'really touched emotionally and honored that Sony would have me back, that the franchise would have me back, that Jen wanted me back, and that the audience wanted me back. It really felt like an honor. Stepping into her shoes again was really fun.'
She added that the current cast is 'phenomenal.'
'It's for them to make it their own,' Hewitt gushed. 'And for me to stand by like a proud mom and say, 'It's yours now, take it and run and enjoy.''
'I Know What You Did Last Summer' hits theaters on Friday.

Where to stream the original ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer' and similar slashers

Love a masked stalker and a guilty secret? Here's what to watch next. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson's summer slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer is a sequel to the 1997 movie of the same name. And while the horror movie had fans rushing to the theater to see who is beneath the Fisherman's slicker this time around, it's also making many nostalgic for the original Jennifer Love Hewitt vehicle — or curious to check it out for the first time. The good news is that the 1997 version is streaming on MGM+ right now. But while the original IKWYDLS may be an obvious next watch if you're a fan of the new movie, the spirit of this slasher exists across plenty of other movies and shows too — all of which are streaming right now. Here are some to check out next time you're in a Last Summer sort of mood. If you want to watch the TV version: (2021) A brand new mystery unfolds for the college-age teens in Prime Video's I Know What You Did Last Summer, an original series inspired, as the slasher films before it was, by Lois Duncan's 1973 novel of the same name. Don't expect the Fisherman, though — this series is a wild, violent ride with a mythology all its own, and it borrows just as much from shows like Pretty Little Liars as it does classic slashers. Streaming on: Prime Video If you want to watch that other '90s slasher flick: (1996) Before he wrote I Know What You Did Last Summer, screenwriter Kevin Williamson found massive success in 1996 with Scream, which is also about a group of teens hunted by a masked killer. The film franchise is still ongoing, with the seventh movie currently in production — but while they're all worth a watch, it's hard to beat the twist ending of the original … that is, if you like scary movies. Streaming on: HBO Max If you want to revisit the '90s from a modern lens: (2021) This film, which is part of a trilogy, is the first installment of Netflix's reimagining of R.L. Stine's Fear Street book series. The slasher takes place in Shadyside, a town with a dark past and a huge body count. When the mysterious lore of the town slams into present day, teenager Sam (Kiana Madeira) must stop the town's monsters from doing what they do best: murdering everyone in sight. Expect crazy kills, quippy teens and, of course, lots of '90s iconography. Streaming on: Netflix If you want a touch of with your slasher: (2017) College student Tree (Jessica Rothe) keeps dying … and coming back to life … and dying again. Can she figure out who is behind the baby-faced mask that is out for her blood before she doesn't wake up for good? Available for rent or purchase: Prime Video If you want more bad decisions: (2009) A prank goes horribly awry in this remake of The House on Sorority Row (1982) and leads to the death of a college student (who just so happens to be played by Audrina Patridge of The Hills!). Just like in I Know What You Did Last Summer, that secret doesn't stay buried, and soon those involved in the cover-up are hunted by a masked killer. Streaming on: Tubi If you want another masked killer … and a romantic twist: (2025) What would a mash-up of a rom-com and a slasher movie look like? Enter Heart Eyes, in which two coworkers (played by Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt) catch feelings for one another when they become a target of a killer hunting down couples. Streaming on: Netflix If you're skipping summer and going right into the holidays: (2023) After a Black Friday stampede leads to the death of several locals, a deranged killer in a Pilgrim costume comes forward to take his revenge on a group of teens, including TikTok-turned-pop star Addison Rae. Fun fact: the concept of the film was first created as a fake movie trailer for the 2007 Quentin Tarantino-Robert Rodriguez double feature Grindhouse. Streaming on: Netflix Solve the daily Crossword

Ginger Minj Reveals Upcoming Adam Shankman Movie Role and Broadway Offers After 'Drag Race' Win (Exclusive)

Ginger Minj Reveals Upcoming Adam Shankman Movie Role and Broadway Offers After 'Drag Race' Win (Exclusive) originally appeared on Parade. Ginger Minj may have won RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars Season 10 less than a week ago. But there is no moss growing under this glamor toad's feet. She's already hard at work booking post-Drag Race Hall of Fame work. "I woke up this morning and saw the crown and scepter sitting on the shelf," she tells Parade over the phone the Monday after finding out she'd triumphed over Jorgeous in the final lip sync. "I went, 'Oh s–t, it's real. It happened. I won.' It felt great in that moment, then I went, 'Okay, well, this is 10 years of your life. What's next?'" 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 As Drag Race alumni continue to push further and further into the mainstream, Ginger Minj's future is already beginning to fill up. "I just booked a starring role in a Universal Pictures film, which is really exciting for me," she says. "It has not been announced yet. I can't say what it is, but I will say that it is being directed by Adam Shankman, who I have loved for forever. Everybody's going to get to see me do what I do best. I'm going to be fun, I'm going to be funny and I'm going to get to sing and dance." While their upcoming collaboration still remains a mystery, Ginger Minj previously acted in Hocus Pocus 2, which Shankman produced. Shankman, who you may remember as a choreographer and judge on So You Think You Can Dance, has also directed musical films like Hairspray, Rock of Ages and Disenchanted. In addition to the top secret movie, Ginger Minj is also "fielding a couple of Broadway offers right now," but remained mum on whether she'd be taking over a role in an existing Broadway show or originating a new one. Currently, both two-time Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon and Season 15's Marcia Marcia Marcia are on Broadway. While Jinkx is about to transition from Pirates! The Penzance Musicalto Oh, Mary!, Marcia is performing nightly in Cabaret. "Everything's looking up. Everything's really exciting," says Ginger Minj. "I'm about to hit the road with Hocus Pocus Live with Jujubee, Sapphira Cristal and myself." Related: Before Ginger's calendar gets too crowded, Parade chatted exclusively with the drag queen about her one-sided feud with Mistress Isabelle Brooks, how she plans on spending her $200,000 and if she'd return for an all-winners season of All Stars. Read Parade's full interview with Ginger Minj below. Congratulations on winning ! You've waited so long for this moment. Does it feel like you thought it would? I don't know how it feels, to be completely honest with you. It hasn't really sunk in yet. This whole weekend after getting crowned has been such a blur. I finally slept last night, and I slept hard. What were the last couple of months like, as you waited to find out if you had won or not?Nerve-wracking. It always is, but it felt like I had so much more to lose or to prove this time around. A lot of people, including the girls and a lot of the fan base, felt like I was at an unfair advantage coming back to the competition again, which is so hilarious to me, because I felt the complete opposite. I felt like I was at a disadvantage coming back because I had already done really well in the past. If I don't not only meet the level of performance that I had before, but exceed it, then I'm going to go home and I'm going to look like a fool. It felt like I was constantly having to reinvent the wheel to make sure I stayed out of the line of fire. The fandom can be very lovely, and it can also be very harsh. This is your fourth time going through this process. Are you able to block out the negativity, or does it still affect you? I'm human, so of course, when certain things creep through, it does sting a little bit. But to be completely honest with you, I handle it the same way I handled Mistress [Isabelle Brooks] in the semifinals. We had a huge feud, but it was all one-sided. I was so focused on the positivity and trying to reach the next goal that I didn't even realize she was so wrapped up in the situation. I feel the same way about the toxicity in the fan base. I don't acknowledge it, because for every one negative comment, there's a dozen beautiful, loving, amazing comments. I just let the monsters eat themselves. Related: How have you celebrated the win? The morning after I won, I took the crown to Universal Studios and did a photo shoot with Elphaba and Gleida. And then I spent the entire day just riding roller coasters with two dozen of my favorite people in the world. And what plans do you have for the $200,000? I take care of my whole family. In our house, there's me, my husband, our friend Michael, my mom, my sister, my youngest nephew and three dogs. So I have some home repairs that need to be taken care of. I got some debt that needs to be paid down, and then I'm going to take that money and get a place in LA so that I can be more present. You talked about a potential Broadway debut in your future. What are your dream roles? There's two, and I can't choose between them. Number one, I want to play Albin in a Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles. I've played it in the past, but it really speaks to me. I really understand that character on such a deep level, and I think, unfortunately, four decades after that show was written, it's more relevant and timely now with what we have going on politically. And just for fun, I want to play Madame Morrible in Wicked. Related: You yet again won Snatch Game this season with your Reba McEntire impersonation. Were there other characters you had thought about playing? I never know until literally moments before I start getting ready what character I'm going to do. I love doing character work, so it's always so exciting for me to prepare for it. I had brought Martha Stewart with me this time. I had brought Ross Mathews. I used to play Michelle Visage on Snatch Game live on the Battle of the Seasons tour, and it went viral like a decade ago. People loved it. So maybe I'll bring that out of retirement. That's the problem with me with Snatch Game. I find too many characters that I want to do. How did you prepare for the LaLaPaRuZa with all the potential songs? The key to success on Drag Race in general, which RuPaul gives you every time she walks into the Werk Room, is "make me laugh." A lot of people forget that. When you lip sync a song, it's not about kicking and splitting and death drops. Those are great, and they can certainly add to the experience, but it's a lip sync. You have to know the words, you have to know the intention, and you have to sell the story. As an actor, that's how I approach every single lip sync. Some people love it. Some people don't get it. To me, the excitement of it is creating these characters and pulling the audience into that world for two or three minutes. I wanted to do three performances that were different. I could put my signature stamp on all of them, the things that people expect me to do, but I wanted to approach them from a different character standpoint each time. Now that you are in the Drag Race Hall of Fame, have any other past winners reached out to welcome you?Almost all of them. Trixie Mattel called me yesterday, and we had a long discussion, and she was just so happy for me. Tia Kofi from UK vs. The World is one of my biggest fans, which is so great, because I'm such a huge fan of hers too, and we had a good heart-to-heart. Kyran Thrax. A lot of the UK girls, honestly, were the first ones to reach out. The thing about being a part of this sisterhood for a decade is [that] I do have those personal connections with so many of the girls, and they've all been very happy for me. Ra'Jah [O'Hara] and Kylie [Sonique Love] both were like, "Girl All Stars 6 really is that bitch? Look at us. We're doing it. Three crowns from three of the top four." So it's been really celebratory. Would you come back for an all-winners season?I would never say no to Drag Race, as long as it fits into my life. I love being there. I love everything it's given to me, and I just love competing. I think it's fun. I think it makes me a better not just entertainer, but a better person. Are there other reality shows you would want to go on, like or ?Everybody always asks me if I would do The Traitors, and as much as I love that show, I think I would be terrible at it, because I'm a terrible liar. I don't have a poker face, so I don't think I'd be good at it, but I would love to do something more along the lines of The Masked Singer, where I could go in, sing and have a good time, where the stakes are relatively low. But Ginger, you blended right into the wall that one time on . That's a perfect move for .You know, I didn't think about that. Maybe I will reevaluate the Minj Reveals Upcoming Adam Shankman Movie Role and Broadway Offers After 'Drag Race' Win (Exclusive) first appeared on Parade on Jul 23, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jul 23, 2025, where it first appeared. Madelyn Cline I Know What You Did Last Summer Cast Trivia Game

We've returned to Southport this summer. The new I Know What You Did Last Summer has finally hit theaters with a new cast of up-and-coming actors. Like Scream (2022), I Know What You Did Last Summer is a legacy sequel that follows a new group of friends who start receiving mysterious notes a year after covering up a fatal car accident. Alongside a brand-new cast, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt reprise their roles from the original film, too. So, to celebrate the new film, we had the cast — Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, and Gabbriette Bechtel — compete in a friendly game of Cast Wars to see who knows who the absolute best. Broken up into two teams, things got personal right out of the gate when Chase, Tyriq, and Gabbriette named their team the Pogues, LOL. We tested their knowledge on some of their costars' earliest acting roles, like Madelyn in Stranger Things and Tyriq in Legacies. And, don't worry, The Wilds fans, we even tested their knowledge on Sarah's role as Leah in the beloved, but short-lived, series. Plus, we wanted to see how well they know the OG movie, so they couldn't escape trivia about it, like what color dress Helen Shivers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) wore. The whole thing was so hilariously chaotic, and it'll make you love these actors (and their competitive sides) even more. You can watch the full video below: And be sure to watch I Know What You Did Last Summer, which is in theaters now! Do you love all things TV and movies?
