‘I Know What You Did Last Summer' red carpet reunites Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar and more

Yahoo20-07-2025
Iconic '90s stars have called — and we're hooked.
Twenty-eight years after the 1997 slasher 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' hit theaters, the cast of the sequel stepped out for its premiere at LA's United Theater on Broadway on Monday.
Along with new faces, including Madelyn Cline, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Chase Sui Wonders, the crowds got a blast from the past.
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. — who starred in the original project together — turned the premiere into date night.
Prinze Jr., 49, reprises his role as Ray Bronson in the sequel. Gellar, 48, played Helen Shivers, who died in the OG movie.
The original Kevin Williamson-written film followed a group of four friends who accidentally kill a man. One year later, they're stalked by a hook-wielding killer. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ryan Phillippe rounded out the cast.
Phillippe's character, Barry William Cox, was also murdered.
The sequel, 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,' was released in 1998.
According to Sony Pictures, the 2025 movie follows five friends who 'inadvertently cause a deadly car accident' before they 'cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences.'
However, 'a year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they're forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer…and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.'
Despite not being in the project, Gellar still came out to support her husband of 23 years. She donned a strapless, Oscar de la Renta butterfly mini dress and matched the carpet with a blue and orange color scheme.
The 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' star accessorized with an orange leather clutch, orange pumps, and kept her long, blonde hair down.
Prinze coordinated with his other half, sporting a navy blue linen suit and loafers.
In October 1997, the pair walked the carpet for the original horror movie separately at the GCC Galaxy Theatre in Hollywood, Calif.
Gellar and Prinze first met on the set of 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' but didn't start dating until 2000.
'History repeating itself! Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. at the I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER premiere in 1997 and again in 2025,' Gellar's friend, Evan Ross Katz, wrote on Instagram beneath a side-by-side shot from both carpets.
Jennifer Love Hewitt, who stars as Julie James in the slasher franchise, also stunned on the red carpet. The actress, 46, wore a Rachel Gilbert black dress embellished with jewels and matching closed-toe heels. Unlike her brunette character, the scream queen rocked ginger-red hair for the big night.
She joins Prinze Jr. onscreen for the new film.
Gellar had another nostalgic run-in on Monday night. The 'Ringer' actress posed with her 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' co-star, Seth Green. Their reunion comes five months after Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Buffy's little sister Dawn Summers, died at age 39.
Gellar is currently in production for the reboot of the hit mystical drama series.
In May, the 'Cruel Intentions' alum announced that Ryan Kiera Armstrong will play the new slayer. The show is set to be the next chapter in the Buffyverse.
Gellar, meanwhile, spoke out in October about not returning to the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' franchise.
She simply told People at the time, 'I am dead.'
'My best friend [Jennifer Kaytin Robinson] is directing it, so we joke that I have an unofficial job, which is I am continuity,' Gellar explained. 'So I'm always the one telling her, 'Well, that would happen, or that wouldn't happen with those characters,' so I do have kind of an unofficial job title.'
Earlier this month, Prinze Jr. weighed in on reuniting with Hewitt on the project.
'Whatever a high school union feels like, that's what it felt like,' he expressed to People. 'You have no idea what's changed, what's the same. You're excited to show what you think you're better at. You hope they notice it. It was all those things.'
Due to the tight filming schedule, 'there just had to be trust that each of us cared enough to put the work in,' Prinze Jr. continued. 'I didn't have any reason not to trust her. I know how much this character means to her. She puts everything into this girl and always has since the first movie.'
Hewitt, for her part, had some reservations about re-joining the cast.
'I'll be super honest, I had total anxiety for 48 hours before [filming] because I was like, 'Can I do this? Am I going to pull this off?' It's a lot of pressure,' she told People in April.
Despite her fear, the 'Holiday Junkie' vet was grateful to be asked back.
'As a female in Hollywood, in your 40s, sometimes you can feel forgotten about,' Hewitt confessed, noting that she felt 'really touched emotionally and honored that Sony would have me back, that the franchise would have me back, that Jen wanted me back, and that the audience wanted me back. It really felt like an honor. Stepping into her shoes again was really fun.'
She added that the current cast is 'phenomenal.'
'It's for them to make it their own,' Hewitt gushed. 'And for me to stand by like a proud mom and say, 'It's yours now, take it and run and enjoy.''
'I Know What You Did Last Summer' hits theaters on Friday.

5 Spooky STAR TREK Episodes

Cover zombie image photo credit: Marni Grossman/Paramount+ On last week's episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, 'Shuttle to Kenfori,' Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and Joseph M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) encounter zombies! But that isn't the first time horror elements have worked their way into the Franchise. For this week's Trek Tuesday, we're covering five Star Trek episodes where things get spooky. Did we include your favorite? 'Catspaw' Did you know the Franchise has a Halloween episode? The honor goes to Star Trek: The Original Series Season 2's 'Catspaw.' It originally aired on October 27, 1967, just in time for the holidays. And in addition to mentioning the objectively best Earth holiday in dialogue, the vibe of the episode is also idea for spooky season. The episode sees the U.S.S. Enterprise under the command of James T. Kirk (William Shatner) visiting a planet called Payris VII. There, they encounter a series of locations, props and characters who are straight out of an Earth horror movie. These include a spooktacular castle, cobwebs, witches, wizards, skeletons and black cats. RELATED: Star Trek and Halloween: In Defense of 'Catspaw' At one point, Kirk and Leonard 'Bones' McCoy (DeForest Kelley) wonder how aliens could know about Halloween. But by the end of the episode, they've discovered the answer. The aliens didn't know about the holiday. However, they do possess a transmuter that can pull information from the heads of humans. Ultimately the aliens are revealed not to be natives of Payris VII, but instead to be creatures from a galaxy that's further away. Interestingly, this episode was written by Psycho author Robert Bloch, and based on his short story 'Broomstick Ride' (1957). 'Masks' Another spooky episode is Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 7's 'Masks.' In this episode, the U.S.S. Enterprise-D discovers a cultural archive hidden inside a rogue comet. The comet, which originated in the D'Arsay system, has been traveling for nearly 90 million years. As the Enterprise-D investigates the comet, strange things happen aboard the ship. An unidentified object appears in Deanna Troi's (Marina Sirtis) quarters. Soon, inscrutable symbols are appearing on the ship's computer monitors. Eventually, the crew discovers the ancient archive hidden within the comet. RELATED: Star Trek : Worst First Contacts As the episode progresses, the crew begins investigating the objects found in the archive. But then Data (Brent Spiner) effectively becomes possessed by 'Ihat' and several other D'Arsay personalities. Things only get stranger as the ship begins transforming into a form that resembles ancient Earth temples and landscapes. Ultimately, Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) dons a D'Arsay mask and assumes the role of one of the personalities himself. This allows for the personality inhabiting Data to complete her emotional arc. Satisfied, she goes back to sleep, returning the Enterprise-D to its traditional form. 'Move Along Home' Remember Jumanji? Well it's back, in Star Trek form! While some might consider Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's 'Move Along Home' to have a silly premise, it's actually quite creepy, if you think about experiencing it for yourself. Wadi visitors from the Gamma Quadrant transform four of our heroes into 'game pieces' in a strange board game called 'chula.' Soon Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig), Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) and Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) find themselves trapped with the Wadi chula game. RELATED: Present Tense: On the Eve of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Bell Riots At first, Bashir believes he is trapped in a dream from which he cannot awaken. But our heroes soon discover that the only way to escape the game is to play through. However, there's an especially disturbing element: their pieces are being manipulated by an unwitting Quark (Armin Shimerman), who is always willing to double the danger for a chance at doubling his winnings. Inside the game, our heroes face disturbing challenges, like a room filling with toxic gas and a creepy singing child. And at the end of the game, all four of our heroes must fall off of a cliff before reappearing in Quark's Bar. Later, in Star Trek: Lower Decks' 'In the Cradle of Vexilon,' Samanthan Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) is forced to undertake the game after a prank on a senior officer goes horribly wrong. 'The Thaw' On Star Trek: Voyager, Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and her crew faced some pretty daunting circumstances. But if you suffer from coulrophobia, Voyager Season 2's 'The Thaw' is really going to mess with your head! In the episode, the U.S.S. Voyager visits a planet where they discover three aliens trapped in hibernation pods. Soon they discover that their minds are inside a kind of 'Matrix.' In order to help them escape, Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) and B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson) volunteer to enter the program as well. RELATED: 4 Freaky Star Trek Voyager Episodes But when they get there, they learn why the alien survivors are unable to escape. The simulation is presided over by a sadistic clown (Michael McKean). It seems that the simulation requires living brains in order to continue to run, so the clown has taken the organic lifeforms hostage. And at one point, the clown even attempts to torture Kim. At the end of the episode, Kim escapes thanks to some clever conniving by the crew. While Janeway seemingly offers herself in exchange for the freedom of the other characters, it turns out a simulation of Janeway is sent in instead. With no remaining organic brains, the clown's reality fades around him in a spooky final scene. 'All Those Who Wander' Photo Cr: Marni Grossman/Paramount+ Strange New Worlds is no stranger to horror genre elements. In addition to Season 3's 'Shuttle to Kenfori,' there is also the penultimate episode of Season 1, 'All Those Who Wander.' In this episode, Pike and his crew must investigate the wreckage of the U.S.S. Peregrine. The Peregrine crashed on the icy planet Valeo Beta V under mysterious circumstances. No sooner does the Enterprise away team arrive then do they discover the dismembered remains of Starfleet officers. Entering the ship, they begin to gather clues on the fate of the crew, who have seemingly all perished. But they do discover two survivors: a child and her alien traveling companion. RELATED: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Pays Homage to Alien Franchise But things go from bad to worse when it turns out the alien is host to a trio of Gorn embryos. After these explode out of his body like Alien's chestburster, the Enterprise crew must face the swiftly growing and extremely dangerous Gorn in order to survive. This episode establishes the Gorn as a menacing and recurring antagonist for Strange New Worlds after their debut in Season 1's 'Memento Mori.' But after this episode, it isn't just La'An Noonien-Singh who has been traumatized by the reptilian aliens. Who knows what horrible things they will do to the Enterprise crew in the remaining episodes of the series? She insisted that Finn (Tanner Novlan) not have a relationship with his biological mother, and he agreed. Of course, they had good reason. Sheila shot Steffy and left her for dead. She also shot Finn and let everybody think he was dead while she nursed him back to health. Purge Creator Wants Pete Davidson To Join The Horror Franchise, And I'm So In

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Pete Davidson seems to be moving himself comfortable within the horror genre, and I'm all here for it. The comedian rose to fame as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, and has since ventured into not-as-comedic roles, and is particularly drawn to the horror genre. After his small part in Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, Davidson will soon be seen starring in The Home, a new film from the creator of The Purge. franchise, James DeMonaco, who revealed he actually wants Davidson to join the horror franchise, and there's technically precedence for it. In a recent interview on The Julia Cunningham Show, franchise writer/director James DeMonaco opened up about directing his new film, The Home, as well as the enduring popularity of his Purge franchise. The filmmaker helmed the first three Purge movies, and will be responsible for writing the upcoming sixth Purge film. Apparently, he's even hoping to include his latest lead in the future project somehow, after the SNL alum expressed his own interest in the franchise over the years. DeMonaco revealed that Davidson's inclusion in The Home came from trying to get him in a Purge movie. He said: Yeah. Well, I did pitch him The Home. We were trying to get him in The Purge though. That's funny you said that, Julia. We always wanted to kill him in The Purge. He would call me every Purge movie and say, 'Please kill me in this one. I want to die in the new Purge film.' Hopefully this mutual interest leads to Davidson joining the franchise in whatever capacity possible. The comedian seems to have an interest dying on the big screen, considering his demise met in The Suicide Squad, and early death in Bodies, Bodies, Bodies. If he does die in Purge 6 however, I'm hoping he lasts longer in the runtime. He's a fascinating figure to watch on screen, infusing his sarcastic sense of humor into his characters. He'd be such a fun addition to the franchise, though I'd love to see his character play things out a little longer than just a quick pre-bludgeoning cameo. For DeMonaco, The Home is yet another interesting insert in his filmography. The movie follows Max, played by Davidson, who while working at a retirement home realizes the residents may be concealing horrifying secrets. It's an unconventional setting for a horror movie, with an unconventional star at the center. However, DeMonaco has always seemed to have an interest in exploring unorthodox concepts in horror movies, so this feels like a strong expansion for his filmography. While fans may be looking towards another Purge film, hopefully they find something just as interesting and sinister in The Home that gets them to the movie theater. Whether he ends up joining the Purge franchise or just sticks to this one DeMonaco collaboration, I'm loving this new phase in Davidson's career. Usually after starring on SNL, actors tend to go the straight comedy route, releasing hilarious films like Happy Gilmore, Anchorman, and Bridesmaids. While we absolutely adore these movies, I love when comedy stars try their hands at something different, and Davidson feels right at home in the horror genre. The Home has yet to be released, but he has already gotten creative with his choices, and I can't wait to see what doors this opens for the actor, especially if this means joining The Purge franchise. You can see Pete Davidson in The Home when it hits theaters on July 25th. Fans of The Purge can also revisit the most recent film in the franchise, The Forever Purge, now with a Peacock subscription. For more information on other spooky films heading to cinemas and streaming, make sure to consult our upcoming horror movie schedule. Solve the daily Crossword
