Search for missing woman focuses on running trails

Yahoo21-02-2025

The search for a woman who has been missing for three days is focusing on running trails she is known to use, police have said.
Jenny Hall, 23, was last seen leaving her home at Barracks Farm, Tow Law, County Durham, on Tuesday just after 15:00 GMT. Her red Ford Focus was found parked on the B6278 between Eggleston and Stanhope.
Ch Insp Dean Haythornthwaite, of Durham Police, said: "We are focusing our search on areas we know Ms Hall likes to run through and we are determined to do everything we can to find her."
The force said searches were concentrating on routes between Eggleston and Hamsterley after searching moorland for the previous two days.
Digital intelligence officers have conducted extensive inquiries into her mobile phone, smart watch and running apps, but none have yielded any results, the force said.
Ms Hall, a keen long-distance runner, is described as 6ft (1.8m) tall with very long dark hair. She was last seen wearing a blue hoodie with a John Deere logo and dark jogging bottoms.
Her family have now confirmed she may have also been carrying a green jacket and had her hair in a ponytail.
Police teams, specialised sniffer dogs and mountain rescue search teams continue to cover ground with air support, despite the weather being described as "challenging".
Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team (TWSMRT) said more than 30 mountain rescuers and three search dogs had covered more than 100 miles (161km) of paths and tracks on the moors either side of the B6278 since Wednesday.
A spokesperson for TWSMRT thanked the public for offers of help, but individuals were advised not to try and assist as it could "hamper the systematic search".
Ch Insp Haythornthwaite said police had "become increasingly concerned" for Ms Hall and were "exploring all lines of enquiry, including dozens from members of the public".
"I would like to thank everyone who is working around-the-clock in our search and efforts to reunite Ms Hall with her family," he added.
Durham Police is urging anyone with any information to ring 999.

Feds ask to keep Kilmar Abrego Garcia in jail pending trial

Feds ask to keep Kilmar Abrego Garcia in jail pending trial The detention request comes after Garcia was mistakenly deported to Salvador in March and then returned to face criminal charges in Tennessee. Show Caption Hide Caption Trump on the return of deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia President Trump spoke with reporters on Air Force One on the return of deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Acting U.S. Attorney Robert McGuire argued that Garcia is 'a serious risk' to flee or threaten witnesses in the case. Justice Department lawyers contend Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Salvadoran immigrant wrongfully deported to his home country and now returned to face criminal charges, should remain jailed while the case is argued. U.S. District Judge Waverly Crenshaw in Tennessee scheduled a detention hearing to consider the question on June 13. Garcia is charged with conspiracy to transport undocumented immigrants and unlawful transportation for financial gain. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for each person transported, and the indictment unsealed last week charged him with driving a van with nine other people in it. Acting U.S. Robert McGuire argued in a filing June 9 that one of the immigrants transported in the conspiracy was a minor, which would justify detention. Garcia 'is a serious risk' to flee or to threaten, injure or intimidate witnesses in the case, McGuire argued. 'It is not simply that he would face serious prison time,' McGuire said in the filing. 'It is that, if convicted, he would likely lose forever the opportunity to remain lawfully in the United States.' 'This motivation is substantially different from a citizen defendant who, while he may face prison time, does not face that permanent expulsion from a country where his family currently resides,' McGuire said. Garcia was among hundreds of immigrants deported March 15 to a notorious Salvadoran prison as an alleged gang member, in his case MS-13. Immigration officials acknowledged an 'administrative error' in removing him despite a court order preventing his deportation while he sought asylum in the U.S. Garcia has denied being a member of MS-13. His lawyers have said he needs to meet with his Maryland family and lawyers to mount his defense, but that he has not gotten a fair trial in the court of public opinion.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia returns to US, faces federal smuggling charges

WASHINGTON - A Maryland man who was mistakenly deported earlier this year has returned to the U.S., but now faces federal charges related to alleged smuggling activities. Kilmar Abrego Garcia, 29, was brought back from El Salvador on Friday after a federal judge ordered his return. However, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that Garcia now faces charges of alien smuggling and conspiracy to commit alien smuggling. READ MORE: Kilmar Abrego Garcia returned to US to face criminal charges, says DOJ What we know Garcia, a resident of Prince George's County, Maryland, was initially arrested and deported in March despite an immigration court order preventing his removal. The Trump administration admitted an error but delayed facilitating his return until the federal judge's ruling. Prosecutors allege Garcia conspired to transport individuals illegally into the U.S. for money, including suspected MS-13 associates and others who cross the border and were in the U.S. illegally -- dating back to 2016. He is also accused of involvement in the murder of a gang member's mother in El Salvador, though the indictment does not formally charge him with that crime. READ MORE: Kilmar Abrego Garcia criminal charges: DOJ claims he ran 'alien smuggling' scheme The case has sparked controversy between those supporting strict immigration policies and those advocating for immigrant rights. "He was a smuggler of humans and children and women," said Attorney General Pam Bondi in announcing Abrego Garcia's return. "The defendant traded the innocence of minor children for profit," said in the unsealing of a grand jury indictment. Maryland Democratic Congressman Glenn Ivey, who traveled to El Salvador but was unable to meet Garcia, questioned the timing of the charges, suggesting they could be a way to shift attention away from government missteps. Garcia remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court at the end of the week. If convicted, he could be deported again to El Salvador.
