UP Court Accepts Plea Against Rahul Gandhi Over Statement Against Sikhs
An MP-MLA court in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi on Monday accepted for hearing a petition filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his statement on Sikhs during his visit to the United States.
Advocate Vivek Shankar Tiwari said a petition was filed in the court regarding the alleged objectionable statement made by Gandhi about Sikhs during his US visit in September 2024. It was dismissed by the additional chief judicial magistrate (special MP-MLA court) after hearing on November 28 last year.
Advocate Vivek Shankar Tiwari said a revision petition was filed in the Sessions Court and Additional District and Sessions Judge, Varanasi (MP-MLA court), Yajuvendra Vikram Singh accepted the plea on Monday for hearing.
In the petition, the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha has been accused of hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community with his "inflammatory" statement made in the US. It has also been claimed in the petition that Khalistani terrorist Gurwant Singh Pannu had supported Gandhi's statement.

RRTS needed in more cities for mobility, quality of life: Parl committee
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs released a report on Tuesday recommending the expansion of modern transport systems such as the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) to more metro cities to ease congestion and promote sustainable development. Noting the growing population pressures on cities such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, the report cited 'insufficient infrastructure, congestion and pollution' as major challenges. It stated: 'There is a need to plan these cities in the regional context to promote balanced and harmonised development and make them sustainable.' The committee, chaired by Lok Sabha member Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy, made the observation in its Fifth Report (2024–25), presented during the 18th Lok Sabha. It examined the role of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) and the relevance of the RRTS in the context of urban growth and regional connectivity. The committee recommended extending similar models to other metropolitan areas beyond the NCR. The report said that the goal of building a 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047 is closely tied to how efficiently people and goods can move across urban and regional spaces. In this context, it endorsed the RRTS as a 'modern transportation solution' that can connect suburban areas with major urban centres. Such connectivity, the committee stated, would allow people to reside in more affordable and less congested zones while still being able to access quality education, healthcare, employment and other facilities. 'Modern transportation solution like the RRTS is the need of the hour so as to enable people to live in sub-urban areas adjoining these big cities... thus increasing their productivity and ensure their social and mental well-being,' the report stated. Slow-moving cities The report comes at a time when multiple Indian cities are facing rising strain on public infrastructure, with urban mobility emerging as a key factor in sustainable city planning. According to the TomTom traffic index released earlier this year, Kolkata emerged as India's most congested city in 2024. Drivers there spent an average of 34 minutes 33 seconds covering 10 km — 10 seconds slower than the previous year — with an average speed of just 17.4 km/h. Bengaluru was a close second, taking 34 minutes 10 seconds for the same distance, with a marginally higher speed of 17.6 km/h. The two cities were followed by Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai and Mumbai as the most congested. Kolkata was also second globally in congestion, only behind Barranquilla in Colombia. The report highlighted worsening urban traffic in India, with 76 per cent of the 500 surveyed cities experiencing slower travel times in 2024 compared to 2023.

Income Tax Appellate Tribunal rejects Congress' appeal against tax demand on ₹199 crore income
The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) has rejected the Indian National Congress' appeal against an income tax demand on an income of ₹199.15 crore, saying that the party filed its returns past the deadline for availing of exemptions due to political parties, and that it also violated cash donation limits. 'We thus conclude that the assessee's return filed on 02.02.2019 is not within the 'due' date to make it eligible for the impugned exemption,' the ITAT said in its order. According to the order, the Congress filed its income tax return for the financial year 2017-18 on February 2, 2019. As per the Income Tax Act, 1961, political parties are allowed a later deadline for filing their returns. For the financial year 2017-18, that deadline was December 31, 2018. In its return, the Congress had declared nil income for 2017-18 after claiming an exemption of ₹199.15 crore under Section 13A of the Income Tax Act, 1961. However, the ITAT ruled that, since the return was filed late, it was not eligible for this exemption. In addition, the assessing officer also found that the Congress had received ₹14.49 lakh as cash donations, which exceeded the limit of ₹2,000 per individual. According to changes made to the Income Tax Act made through the Finance Act 2017, political parties can receive donations above ₹2,000 only through formal banking channels, not cash. Overall, the party's declared total receipts of ₹199.15 crore against expenses of ₹197.43 crore, thereby showing a surplus of ₹1.71 crore. However, the Income Tax Department's assessment order on July 6, 2021, denied that the income could be exempted from tax, making the full receipt amount taxable. The Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals) then upheld this decision on March 28, 2023, following which the Congress approached the Appellate Tribunal.
