Juan Soto spoils Gavin Williams' no-hit bid with 9th-inning home run, but Guardians hold on to top Mets

Yahoo4 hours ago
MLB is still seeking its first no-hitter of the 2025 season.
Cleveland Guardians starter Gavin Williams threw 8 1/3 no-hit innings against the New York Mets on Wednesday and had the green light to go all the way despite having the highest pitch count of the MLB season.
But Juan Soto spoiled the party. The Mets slugger hit a deep fly ball to center field on a 1-0 fastball that Williams left over the plate. Centerfielder Angel Martinez gave chase and made a play on the ball at the wall. But the ball snuck over his glove and just over the wall for a home run before bouncing back into the field of play.
The home run was Soto's 26th of the season and stood as New York's only run of the day as Cleveland held on for a 4-1 victory.
MLB is still seeking its first solo no-hitter since Blake Snell no-hit the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 2, 2024 while pitching for the San Francisco Giants. Three Chicago Cubs pitchers combined to no-hit the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sept. 4 of last season.

Williams finished the eighth inning having already thrown a career-high 111 pitches. But Guardians manager Stephen Vogt didn't hesitate to send him back out for the ninth to face the top of the Mets order.
Vogt struck out Francisco Lindor to lead off the inning before Soto's home run ended the bid. Vogt didn't get the last out, but he finished the game with the win, having thrown 8 2/3 innings with six strikeouts, four walks issued and the single hit allowed to Soto. He threw 126 pitches.
The effort lowered Williams' ERA to 3.17 for the season, which would stand as the best of his three-season MLB career.
The Guardians are still seeking their first no-hitter since Len Barker threw a perfect game against the Toronto Blue Jays in 1981.

David Bednar goes longer than expected for his 1st Yankees save to end their 5-game skid

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — David Bednar got his first save for the New York Yankees after going a little longer than expected, and ended their five-game losing streak before going home. Bednar got the final five outs, all on strikeouts, in their 3-2 win at Texas on Wednesday. The game-ending one came with two runners on base after manager Aaron Boone had gone to the mound with the intention of pulling the right-hander that New York acquired from Pittsburgh at the trade deadline last Thursday. 'I said, 'I'm going to take you here.' And he gave me a look like, no you're not,' Boone said. 'He absolutely wanted the ball and, you know, felt like his stuff was still there. ... What a great, gutsy effort.' Bednar's 18th save overall this season came in his third appearance for the Yankees (61-54), who remained ahead of Texas for the American League's third and final wild-card spot. They have a day off before opening a three-game series against AL West-leading Houston at home on Friday night after Bednar's first two series with New York were on the road. Bednar had two strikeouts to end the eighth and two more to open the ninth before Corey Seager walked on six pitches and Marcus Semien grounded a 3-1 pitch through the right side of the infield for a single. Bednar, already at a season-high 36 pitches and with cleanup hitter Adolis García headed to the plate, initially didn't see his new manager walking toward him. 'I was just kind of getting my mind right to face García,' Bednar said. 'I told (Boone) I wanted him and, you know, he agreed. And I just wanted to bear down and get that last one.' Bednar struck out García, finishing with a season-high 42 pitches for his most since 43 in an eight-out save for the Pirates at St. Louis on June 15, 2022. It was the third time this season Bednar recorded five outs, and the second in his week with the Yankees. 'That was awesome, especially that last one,' said Paul Goldschmidt, whose pinch-hit solo homer in the seventh broke a 2-2 tie. 'To go out out there and make those pitches was huge.' ___ AP MLB:

Twins All-Star Starting Pitcher Tagged As Offseason Trade Candidate

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Minnesota Twins blew it up with a flurry of trades that saw 10 players from their major league squad traded at the deadline. Surviving the onslaught of trades was Joe Ryan, who remained in Minnesota despite being one of the more valuable trade chips that they had. Ryan will be entering the offseason with two years of team control remaining, and if the Twins are content with continuing their teardown, R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports believes he could be on the move. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - APRIL 6: Joe Ryan #41 of the Minnesota Twins pitches in the first inning of the game against the Cleveland Guardians at Target Field on April 6, 2024 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - APRIL 6: Joe Ryan #41 of the Minnesota Twins pitches in the first inning of the game against the Cleveland Guardians at Target Field on April 6, 2024 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Photo by"Ryan, a savvy addition originally gained through the Nelson Cruz trade, has developed into an above-average starter with a dominant fastball," Anderson wrote. "His name popped up at the deadline, and if he's made available he's certain to draw a crowd." Ryan's name did appear in several rumors around the trade deadline, and if the Twins had more time, he might have been the next to go. The right-hander has developed into a solid starting pitcher, earning himself an All-Star appearance this season. With two more seasons of team control, he could net a healthy return to kick-start the Twins' rebuild. The Twins have seemingly chosen a path for the future, and with Ryan set to be a free agent in 2027, it is unlikely that they will open a competitive window during his tenure without an extension. The Minnesota right-hander has produced a career-best 2.83 ERA and impressive strikeout numbers; many teams would be clamoring for his services if he were made available. Similar to Ryan, Pablo López is entering the final two seasons of his contract, and if the Twins listen to Ryan, they could listen to their other right-handed starter. With the Twins headed for a ground-zero rebuild, Ryan could be the first of many names they look to move on from in the upcoming offseason. Dodgers Superstar Shohei Ohtani's 300th Home Run Ball Likely to Sell for Over $100K

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani continues to turn heads around baseball for his performances at the plate and on the mound. He just recently surpassed 300 home runs in his career between the United States and Japan. Now, the baseball is expected to sell for an expensive price tag which should not be surprising since his 50-50 ball sold for $4.39 million. TAMPA, FLORIDA - AUGUST 01: Shohei Ohtani #17 of the Los Angeles Dodgers looks on from the on deck circle in the fourth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field on August 01, 2025 in Tampa, Florida. More"We expect this ball to sell for six figures, and since Ohtani collectors pay strong prices for the 'best of the best,' I wouldn't be surprised if it sells for hundreds of thousands of dollars," said Jordan Gilroy, Director of Acquisitions at Lelands Sports Memorabilia and Card Auction, per "The 50-50 ball sold for so much since Ohtani was the only player to hit the 50-50 milestone, so it put the value in a category of its own." Ohtani is one of the most popular players in Major League Baseball, and he continues to produce this season. He's recorded a slash line of .276/.380/.601 with a 170 OPS+ as well as 38 home runs and 73 RBI entering Wednesday. His continued success is why the ball is being auctioned instead of enshrined into Cooperstown. "Striking the iron while it's hot always results in the best outcome, and the Ohtani iron has been red hot since he came into MLB," said Gilroy. "When someone hits a milestone home run, that event is fresh in people's minds and hype is at an all-time high, so that's the best time to sell. If he continues to perform at the same level, this could become a half million or even a million-dollar baseball." Ohtani's name is in the heart of the conversation for National League Most Valuable Player as baseball begins the penultimate month of the regular season. His baseball will be on the auction until Aug. 16, and baseball fans around the world can access the bidding site here. More MLB: Jurickson Profar Contract Could be 'Worst Signing in Braves History'
