Despite Goa's stable cultivation area, paddy production records a decline

Panaji: Paddy cultivation in Goa recorded a decline in the agricultural year 2024-25, as production dropped to 1.1 lakh tonnes — a sharp decrease of over 27,000 tonnes compared to the previous year's record high of 1.4 lakh tonnes, according to the data shared by the directorate of agriculture. This decline comes despite a marginal increase in the area under cultivation, which stood at 32,613 hectares in 2024-25, slightly higher than the 32,477 hectares reported in 2023-24. The figures suggest that while land dedicated to paddy farming remained stable, factors affecting the yield have taken a toll on production. Experts attribute the drop in productivity to Goa recording 4,400mm of rainfall from June to Sep 2024, marking it as the highest southwest monsoon rainfall in 120 years. 'Last year, the climate did not support paddy. In the kharif season, crops were submerged for 15-20 days in some areas. The impact of climate change is beyond anyone's control,' said K K Manohara, senior scientist, plant breeding, at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. He said, 'The only way forward is climate-resilient crops that can withstand incessant rainfall and submergence in low-lying areas.' The 2023-24 agricultural year saw Goa achieve its highest paddy output in five years, with 1.4 lakh tonnes produced from 32,477 hectares. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Emergency Generators in Yeba: (Prices May Surprise You) Emergency Generator | Search Ads Search Now Undo This marked a growth from the Covid-19 years, where production hovered around 1.3 lakh tonnes annually. However, the dramatic fall in 2024-25 reversed this positive trend. Compared to 2019-20, when production was 1.3 lakh tonnes from 34,698 hectares, the latest figures show a 15.2% decline in production, even though the area under cultivation has only dropped by 6% over the same period. Farmers have attributed the decline to a combination of factors. 'Two generations ago, the only means of survival for people in our village was farming and fishing; however, now the fields are fallow due to a lack of labour, present generations uninterested in agriculture, and non-profitability in yield,' said Anup Kudtadkar, a community farmer from Canacona. He said, 'Despite the availability of mechanised transplanters of paddy seedlings and harvesters, there aren't enough skilled workers available to execute the task. Moreover, the labour costs for post-harvest activities such as drying, sifting, and storing are very high in Goa.' Even subsidies from govt are delayed, Kudtadkar said, adding that unless there is profitability in this sector, the decline in paddy cultivation is inevitable. Goa to roll out new salt-tolerant paddy variety for 2026 kharif season

Goa's latest paddy seed variety, which offers improved resilience against salinity, waterlogging, and crop lodging, is likely to be released for large-scale cultivation in the Kharif season 2026, state Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik has said. In a written reply in the legislative assembly on Friday, Naik said that the new variety is currently in its second year of on-farm trials and has already shown promising results in demonstration plots under the Minikit Programme. He was responding to a question by independent MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco. According to the data furnished by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Goa Dhan-5 was developed to build on the performance of earlier salt-tolerant varieties Goa Dhan-1 and Dhan-2 released in 2017, and Dhan-3 and Dhan-4 released in 2019, the minister said. Naik said that while the first four Dhan varieties are tolerant to saline conditions, Goa Dhan-5 stands out for its added resistance to waterlogging and complete or partial submergence for 10 to 15 days, making it suitable for the state's flood-prone and coastal agricultural zones. "It also has a strong culm, which improves resistance to lodging a common issue that affects plant stability and yield during heavy rains and wind," he stated. The minister further said that the trial results indicate Goa Dhan-5 yields around six tonnes per hectare under normal conditions and four to four and half tonnes under saline conditions. "More than 40 farmers in Amona, Chorao, Neura, Shiroda, and Cumbarzua villages in both North and South Goa are cultivating the variety as part of the ongoing demonstration phase," he said. The seed variety is expected to be formally proposed for release to the State Variety Release Committee (SVRC) after reviewing its performance during the current Kharif season. If cleared, seeds will be made available to farmers in time for the next planting cycle, he added. BBAU is first choice for over 800 candidates

Lucknow: Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) became the first preference of around 800 candidates from across the country who confirmed their admission against 2,000 seats in the first round of online counselling. According to university officials, this was the highest admission taken after fee submission in the first phase of counselling in the last three years. "We are extremely happy with the response from the candidates. On July 7, we declared the centralised score list for candidates who cracked the CUET with high scores. Our 40% seats got filled, which means that BBAU is among the first choice of candidates from across the country," said BBAU admission chairperson Prof Amit Kumar Singh. He said a candidate who appears for CUET fills multiple universities, be it Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University or others. Interestingly, if around 800 candidates locked seats who hold high CUET scores, it reflects that BBAU is their first choice. He said online counselling was held from July 8 to 10, during which candidates got their document verification done and submitted fees. Vice-chancellor Prof RK Mittal said: "BBAU's A++ NAAC grade and good rankings across four NIRF categories in the previous year is the reason for the good response from CUET high scorers."
