Sarma: Principal must apologise for baby's death
After his visit to the hospital on Monday night, Sarma told the media, "The infant died in the NICU due to complete negligence of GMCH. The principal should apologise to the parents. It was a blunder and an inexcusable offence."
He added that the death caused him extreme pain, and he felt unexplainable shame at the occurrence of such a tragic incident at GMCH. "This hospital has more doctors, nurses, and other staff than required.
It was absolute negligence on the part of GMCH, due to which Smita Deka and Utpal Bordoloi lost their four-day-old infant," he added.
The infant died after falling from a cot and becoming entangled in medical equipment wires. GMCH principal Achyut Ch Baishya labelled the incident as an 'accident', drawing criticism.
Meanwhile, the body of the infant was handed over to the couple, Smita Deka and Utpal Bordoloi. The couple left the hospital with the lifeless body of their first child after the chief minister met them late on Monday night and promised a comprehensive investigation.
Bordoloi told the media that he was asked to visit the CM at his home regarding the incident. "The CM said he would understand the situation and see what can be done.
I am convinced of the assurance of the CM that we will get justice," he added.
He added that he has lodged an FIR explaining what he witnessed in the NICU and alleging complete negligence behind the death of their child.
The state govt has formed a three-member committee that includes additional chief secretary L Sweety Changson, director of medical education Dr Anup Kumar Barman, and AIIMS Guwahati paediatric specialist (HOD) Dr Jaya Shankar Kaushik to probe the circumstances surrounding the infant's death. This comes after CM Himanta Biswa Sarma promised a comprehensive investigation.

GMCH infant death probe focuses on staff negligence
1 2 Guwahati: The Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) is under intense scrutiny as a state-appointed committee delves into the tragic death of a four-day-old infant in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The investigation, launched on Monday, aims to uncover the truth behind the incident that has rocked Assam's largest hospital. The probe follows the heart-wrenching death of a newborn girl who fell from a cot and became entangled in medical equipment wires while receiving treatment. A nurse, who was reportedly preparing milk for the infants at the time, has been arrested on charges of negligence. However, questions remain about whether the hospital adhered to guidelines mandating the presence of adequate medical staff in the NICU. According to sources, statements from those linked to the case will be taken, and the report is expected to be submitted within a week. Reports suggest that more than 20 infants were in the NICU under the care of the accused nurse when the incident took place. One of the arrested nurse's colleagues told the media, "She also had to prepare milk and also monitor so many babies at the same time, which is not a joke." Prof. Achyut Baishya, principal of GMCH, had also confirmed that the nurse was preparing milk. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cable TV Cable TV Search Now Undo However, some hospital officials have questioned the absence of other staff members when one nurse was preparing milk, which was essential for the babies. "About three to four nurses were required in the NICU to assist her (the arrested nurse)," said another nurse. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed to the public to wait until the report comes. "If someone thinks that a particular person is responsible (for the death of the infant) but govt has not taken action, he or she should inform before the three-member committee probing the case. But we cannot arrest doctors based on media reports. That's not fair," Sarma said. His statement came as some GMCH nurses pointed fingers at two doctors who were allegedly absent from the NICU during the incident. Nurse arrested in Guwahati for death of newborn who fell from phototherapy bed
The nurse who was on duty when a newborn baby fell from a phototherapy bed and died in the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital's Neonatal ICU (NICU) earlier this week has been arrested for culpable homicide. The incident, inside Assam's largest state government-run hospital, took place early on August 18. GMCH Principal and Chief Superintendent, Dr Achyut Chandra Baishya, had on Monday said that the nurse on duty was in another room preparing milk for admitted babies when the infant, along with another baby who survived, fell from a phototherapy bed in which they were both receiving treatment for jaundice. DCP, Guwahati East, said that the nurse on duty has been arrested. 'She was responsible for the room where the babies were kept and where the incident took place. She had left the room at the time, leaving the babies unattended, because of which the incident took place. We are continuing our interrogation and investigation,' he told The Indian Express. He said that she has been booked under section 105 of the BNS, which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. There were reportedly 35 babies in the NICU room in which the incident had taken place. DCP Deka said that whether the room was adequately staffed is a question of 'internal administration'. Dr Baishya declined to comment, saying that a high-level probe into the incident is currently underway. Following the incident, the Chief Minister had constituted a three-member committee comprising Additional Chief Secretary Sweety Changsan, Director of Medical Education Dr Anup Barman and AIIMS Guwahati Head of the Department of Paediatrics Dr Jaya Shankar Kaushik to conduct an inquiry into the incident. The baby had been born on August 15 and was undergoing treatment for jaundice in the NICU. She had been strangulated by wires attached to the phototherapy bed when she fell from it. The child's father had blamed the hospital for the death.
