Five-star energy-efficient appliance could reduce electricity demand by several billion kWh annually: BEE
Ahead of the World Environment Day on June 5, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) detailed the amount of electricity that can be saved by using five-star rated energy-efficient appliances, maintaining air conditioner settings at 24°C or higher and other methods.
The BEE, under the Ministry of Power, called upon all State Designated Agencies (SDAs) across India to commemorate the forthcoming World Environment Day with a focused emphasis on energy efficiency, energy conservation, and the broader objectives of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).
The SDAs, including Telangana, were urged to promote the initiative to use five-star rated energy-efficient appliances, especially air conditioners, refrigerators, and ceiling fans, which significantly reduce electricity consumption and costs. This could reduce electricity demand by several billion kWh annually, as per a press release from BEE.
AC at 24°C
'Actively campaign for maintaining air conditioner settings at 24°C or higher, as part of BEE's ongoing energy efficiency drive in commercial and residential sectors. Setting ACs at 24°C alone can result in substantial energy savings across millions of households,' it added.
Behavior-based energy-saving practices
Some of the behavior-based energy-saving practices that were suggested include maximizing the use of natural light and ventilation; switching off lights and appliances when not in use and shifting to LED lights and other energy-efficient alternatives. 'Behavioral changes and conscious consumption can collectively contribute to a 22.5 billion kWh energy saving, as projected under Mission LiFE,' as per the press release.
It has also recommended using solar water heaters and cookers to reduce dependence on conventional fuels, CNG/electric vehicles and bicycles for short distances and adopt water conservation techniques and eco-friendly building practices.

Banjara Tribal Park project progresses at snail's pace
Bidar: The Rs 200 crore Banjara Tribal Park construction in Bidar's Humanabad taluk is progressing sluggishly, causing public discontent over the apparent negligence of government officials and politicians. The development of the tribal park in Borampalli village, intended to preserve the culture, attire, dance and artistic traditions of the Banjara community, has remained stagnant for a decade. The state govt approved construction on 34.06 acres in 2015-16, planning completion within a year. The Siddaramaiah-led Congress govt allocated Rs 200 crore, releasing Rs 30 crore initially. Karnataka Tanda Development Corporation initiated the first phase, establishing a compound wall and roads. However, contracted departments' slow execution has hindered progress. The proposed park includes plans for a Banjara garment manufacturing unit incorporating modern technology, aiming to generate employment while preserving traditional clothing culture. Traditional Banjara embroidery faces decline in the modern era and the govt plans to establish training facilities to preserve this. Plans also include establishing a school for traditional dance and musical instruments, alongside a cement and brick manufacturing unit. The park aims to provide part-time residential schools for children of migrating workers. Additionally, the corporation plans to establish a deaddiction centre. Corporation chairman Jaidev Nayak, who has been in charge for a year, told TOI that he does not know why the project was stopped and will look into the matter. He said there is no market for the embroidery work of the community as it costs a little.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice president and Congress MP Rajeev Shukla believes the ruling party, Congress, "should not be blamed" for the stampede that broke out outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL winning celebrations on Wednesday. After the stampede incident, Karnataka Legislative Council member, BK Hariprasad, said that 11 people, including a woman, died in the stampedes during the event. Shukla feels the stampede outside the stadium should not be "politicised" and revealed he spoke to the franchise. According to Shukla, RCB didn't expect such a huge crowd to attend the celebrations. He also assured that efforts are being made to provide maximum help to the families of the victims. "This can happen in any state, and the ruling party should not be blamed for it. It should not be politicised. If this happens in a BJP-ruled state, we should not blame them. The crowd was huge. I spoke to the franchise, and they also did not think that such a huge crowd would come, and this incident happened suddenly. Efforts are being made to provide maximum help to the families of the deceased," Shukla told reporters. "The government did stop the roadshow in order to avoid a stampede or any such situation. But it was not anticipated that a stampede would happen outside the stadium. Everybody should work together on the damage control," he added. Opposition parties in the state, including the Janata Dal (Secular), have squarely blamed the Congress-led state government for what they describe as a complete failure of planning and public safety. Union Minister of Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy said the primary reason for this "massive tragedy is the lack of proper planning and complete failure to take precautionary measures". Kumaraswamy, a former Karnataka Chief Minister, said the state's Congress government must take full responsibility for this disaster. "The tragic incident of a stampede near Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium during the RCB victory celebrations, resulting in the unfortunate death of people, has left me deeply shocked. It is extremely painful to see innocent lives lost even before the celebrations could begin," he said.
