Meta apologises for inaccurate Kannada translation, claims to have fixed issue
Raising concerns over the faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on Meta platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, Siddaramaiah said that it was leading to the distortion of facts and misleading users. 'We fixed an issue that briefly caused this inaccurate Kannada translation. We apologize that this happened,' a Meta spokesperson said.
Siddaramaiah said social media platforms must act responsibly, especially when dealing with official communication, and cautioned citizens to be aware that translations displayed on these platforms are often inaccurate.
'Faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on Meta platforms is distorting facts and misleading users. This is especially dangerous when it comes to official communication. My media advisor has formally written to Meta urging immediate correction,' Siddaramaiah posted on 'X'. 'Social media platforms must act responsibly. I caution citizens to be aware that translations shown are often inaccurate. Such negligence by tech giants can harm public understanding and trust,' he added.
In an email sent to Meta on July 16, the chief minister's media advisor, K V Prabhakar, raised serious concerns on behalf of the CM regarding the automatic translation of Kannada content on Facebook and Instagram.
The government has asked Meta to temporarily suspend the auto-translation feature for Kannada content until translation accuracy is reliably improved. Machine translations are shown to users in various instances on Facebook and Instagram, including public biographical info and specific pieces of content.
In the case of Kannada auto-translation, Meta's AI machine translation model provided a machine translation error which caused inaccurate Kannada translations in Facebook-- which the company claims to have been fixed now.

Indians taking charge of financial journeys through digital content & creators, shows study
Representational Image MUMBAI: Even as traditional channels have long guided financial decisions, a new wave is gaining momentum – Indians are increasingly taking charge of their financial journeys through digital content, communities, and creators. Financial advice is no longer confined to expert columns or in-branch consultations – it's happening on Reels, in WhatsApp groups, and through Instagram creators demystifying jargon in under 60 seconds, showed a study commissioned by Meta and conducted by IPSOS. The study shows that 6 out of 8 touchpoints in the purchase journey of financial products are now digital, with 50 per cent of these digital touchpoints attributed to Meta platforms. Additionally, more than 50 per cent of financial services consumers view personal finance and investing content on Meta platforms. The study also shows that 81 per cent of consumers use Meta platforms during the discovery phase of financial products. The influence doesn't just stop there – it continues through evaluation (79 per cent) and remains strong at the final purchase stage (83 per cent). For products like loans (86 per cent), investments (84 per cent), insurance (78 per cent), and savings (82 per cent), our apps play a definitive role throughout the decision-making funnel. A significant 75 per cent trust financial podcasts, while 67 per cent look to influencers and subject matter experts for guidance. More than 2000 respondents aged 25-45 across Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Kolkata were surveyed for the study. 'Financial planning is integral to the lives of most Indians across income groups. There are only a few days left to claim your share of a $4.5 million settlement with GameStop. This comes after a lawsuit said the company sold customers' personal data to Facebook without permission, according to WFFA. In June, GameStop emailed customers about the settlement. It denied wrongdoing but settled to avoid trial costs and risks.(REUTERS) The class action lawsuit said GameStop broke federal law, specifically the Video Privacy Protection Act, or VPPA. The company took customer data from purchases on its website and gave it to Facebook. GameStop did not admit to doing anything wrong as part of the settlement. Anyone who bought a video game from GameStop's website between August 18, 2020, and April 7, 2025, and had a public Facebook profile with their name at the time of purchase is eligible. Although GameStop did not admit fault, it agreed to settle to avoid the costs and risks of continuing the lawsuit. If you got that email, you are likely part of the settlement group. How much money can you get? Eligible people can get either up to $5 in cash or a GameStop voucher worth up to $10. It is not clear how many people qualify for the settlement. How do you file a claim? First, check your email. The payments are linked to a unique ID number in the email from GameStop. This ID is a 10-character mix of letters and numbers. Anyone with this ID can file a claim before August 15 to get their payment. If you choose a voucher, the credit will be added to your GameStop account linked to your email. If you choose cash, you will get paid through Zelle, Venmo, or PayPal. If you did not get an email with an ID but believe you qualify, you can fill out a paper claim form. When will you get paid? Payments may take some time because they depend on court approval. A court hearing is scheduled for September 18, 2025. If approved, payments will be sent about 45 days after final approval or after any appeals are finished. Voucher payments will also be emailed about 45 days after final approval.
