Modi to inaugurate Metro Yellow Line on Aug 10

Hans India3 days ago
Bengaluru: The long-awaited inauguration of the Namma Metro Yellow Line is finally set to become a reality. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Bengaluru on August 10 to officially inaugurate the Yellow Line, fulfilling a long-pending dream of residents in the city's southern region. On the same occasion, PM Modi is also expected to lay the foundation stone for the ambitious Phase-3 metro project.
Recently, the Commissioner of Railway Safety granted clearance for operations on the Yellow Line, clearing the final hurdle for the launch.
The Yellow Line spans 19.15 kilometers from RV Road to Bommasandra and has been constructed at a cost of approximately ₹5,056.99 crore.
The corridor includes 16 stations and is expected to significantly ease travel in the city's southern zone.
The Phase-3 metro project, which will be formally launched by PM Modi during the visit, will add an additional 44.65 kilometers of metro line to the network, with an estimated budget of ₹15,611 crore.Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya tweeted confirmation of the inauguration, stating that the safety inspection of the Yellow Line has been successfully completed and that August 10 will mark a historic day for South Bengaluru.
He expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister on behalf of all citizens of the city for prioritising infrastructure development.
The Yellow Line is expected to benefit nearly 8 lakh commuters daily and is seen as a major step towards resolving the notorious Silk Board traffic congestion. With increasing vehicular density in the city, public transportation has emerged as the only sustainable solution, according to Surya.
The dual milestone—Yellow Line inauguration and Phase-3 groundbreaking—is estimated to bring infrastructure worth ₹20,000 crore exclusively to South Bengaluru.
'We are deeply grateful to Prime Minister Modi for his continued commitment and affection towards improving public transport infrastructure in this region,' Surya added in his post.

Trump plans 100% tariff on chips made outside U.S.; OpenAI's GPT-5 nears release; Apple to invest $100 billion in U.S. manufacturing

Trump plans 100% tariff on chips made outside U.S. U.S. President Donald Trump said that he will be imposing 100% tariff on computer chips unless they're manufactured within the U.S. The threat has raised the fears around higher prices of electronics, automobiles, household appliances and other essential electronic items. Trump's warning comes three months after he had said electronics would mostly be exempt from the heavy tariffs imposed by his administration. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a shortage of chips pushed up the price of autos causing increased inflation. Investors have said that the tariff exemptions were a plus for Apple and other major tech companies which have invested massive amounts of money in chip manufacturing outside the U.S. Apple has committed to investing $600 billion in the U.S. with another $100 billion promised in February. Big Tech in total has said they will be investing $1.5 trillion in the U.S. since Trump has come to power. There is a chance that Trump could exempt Apple from the tariffs owing to this. Demand for chips has grown with sales increasing by 19.6% in June, according to data. Trump has been fostering domestic manufacturing often saying that the high costs of chips outside the country could be avoided by opening factories domestically. OpenAI's GPT-5 nears release OpenAI is preparing for the release of their latest flagship AI model, GPT-5, so users can finally see the increments in performance from GPT-4. A couple of people who have tested the model said that the coding capabilities of the model shone as did its ability to solve science and math problems. However, the advances from GPT-4 to GPT-5 were not as huge as the advances from GPT-3 to GPT-4. The recent advancement in AI models was based on scaling up by increasing training data and compute. But OpenAI has struggled with scaling up like issues with running into a data wall. Ilya Sutskever, the former chief scientist at OpenAI had said in a speech earlier that even though power could be expanded, data was becoming limited. Besides this, another problem was that the 'training runs' for large language models are more likely to have failures from hardware malfunctioning so researchers can't determine the final performance of the models until the end which can last for months. OpenAI released ChatGPT around three years ago introducing AI to the mainstream globally. The release led to rivals like Google and Anthropic releasing competitive AI models. OpenAI is also working on solving test-time compute which involves reasoning AI models. But CEO Sam Altman said that GPT-5 will be a mix of both reasoning and their flagship large language models. Apple to invest $100 billion in U.S. manufacturing Apple CEO Tim Cook met Donald Trump yesterday to announce an additional investment of $100 billion across the next four years. Under the announcement, Apple will bring more of their supply chain and advanced manufacturing processes to the U.S. as a part of the American Manufacturing Programme initiative but it still isn't a full commitment to make the iPhone domestically completely. Cook said that this plan will expand work with 10 companies across the U.S. that make parts and semiconductor chips. These partners include Corning, Coherent, Applied Materials, Texas Instruments and Broadcom along with a few others. Apple had earlier this year said that it will invest $500 billion domestically. Trump has been upset with Apple shifting their manufacturing processes to India from China after he placed tariffs. Just recently now, Trump is targetting India due to their purchase of Russian oil and imposed additional tariffs on India. Cook has previously said that a bunch of iPhone components can be made in India like the glass display and module to identify faces.

Modi-Trump showdown over tariffs and Russia trade—explained in 9 charts

A day after the US imposed an additional 25% reciprocal tariff on India, on top of an earlier 25%, Prime Minister Narendra Modi signalled that India was unwilling to offer concessions in agriculture and dairy. 'India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen and dairy farmers," Modi said, speaking at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in Delhi, today. 'I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it." And there is indeed a heavy price to pay. The additional US tariffs have put India at a significant disadvantage compared to its peers. While some sectors like electronics and pharmaceuticals are shielded by exemptions, many labour-intensive segments such as textiles, organic chemicals and carpets will bear the brunt. These sectors were already subject to high tariffs under the most favoured nation (MFN) regime. Over the past month, India-US ties have deteriorated, largely due to a deadlock over a trade deal. At the heart of the impasse are Washington's demands for greater access to India's agriculture and dairy markets, in exchange for lowering reciprocal tariffs. While the initial 25% tariff in the absence of a deal was expected, the additional penalty, reportedly linked to India's trade with Russia, has drawn criticism. India has accused both the US and the European Union (EU) of hypocrisy for targeting it and Indian companies over continued trade with Moscow, even as those very countries maintain substantial commercial ties with Russia. Even after a sharp rise in India's trade with Russia (particularly on the back of oil), it has not surpassed the level of trade the EU has despite several sanctions since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. However, when it comes to energy imports specifically, India is buying more from Russia than the EU does. The US, too, despite having cut down Russian imports, has continued to purchase key commodities like fertilisers, palladium, and uranium. Asked about the continued US import of Russian uranium, Trump did not offer a proper explanation. 'I don't know anything about it. I have to check it out," he said on this, many experts have also pointed out the US's double standards in taxing India, while China buys more Russian oil. China has not come under fire yet, as its trade deal negotiations with the US may come to fruition. Given the current circumstances, India does have the option to stop purchasing oil from Russia. Before the Ukraine war, India barely purchased oil from Russia. The Indian government has, time and again, claimed that the shift was made only at the request of Washington to keep crude oil prices in check. In a way, India can shift back its focus to its main oil trade partners from pre-war times, such as Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, among others. According to Nomura estimates, the cost of such a switch would be around $1.5 billion, assuming an average discount of $2.2 per barrel. That's a relatively small figure compared to India's total exports of $87 billion. So while India could stop buying Russian oil at minimal cost, many believe the latest US penalties are not entirely about Moscow. Rather, they reflect Washington's frustration with India's refusal to make the market access concessions it has long sought, a position the prime minister reinforced in his speech today. The escalating tensions have left India in a tight spot. It must now carefully balance the protection of domestic markets with safeguarding the interests of exporters, especially in vulnerable, labour-intensive sectors.
